God, podcast fans really are the fuckin worst. I'm not going to read a bunch of butthurt whining about how she was personally betrayed by the show so care to summarize?

The people who run the official site didn't like that they made a fanpage so they banned them from the UYD forums and spread rumors about them. Seth and Jonathan themselves supposedly talked poo poo about them too and, in an unrelated incident, Seth yelled at the one women on the phone and made her cry (which she was made fun of for on the forums). Also, they were assholes to one of her friends after a live show - which I have a hard time believing.

The only thing that makes this of note at all is that it's fairly hilarious how worked up they apparently are about this. They're on a mission to make it known that the guys aren't saints and that they are frauds who don't appreciate their fans. They're asking people to flood the voicemail inbox with complaints about their treatment of these women. As if anyone gives a poo poo. How the hell do you get this distraught over a comedy podcast??

One of the interesting things about UYD is that, because it's mostly-unscripted (as far as I can tell they just have index cards with topics on them and web/magazine articles they read aloud), you see a lot of sides to Seth and Jonathan. After 320-odd hours of listening to them talk, you get a really rounded picture of what they're like. Sometimes you get things like the adoption fight, or a sobering moment where they mutually confront a genuine fear of old age. Sometimes you get stuff like Jah's stupid "human being" backpedaling.

Anyone who thinks of Seth and Jah as being immaculately cool, caring guys is just taken in by how funny they are. And they are really loving funny. But they're just two regular guys, and LA guys at that. Egocentricism comes with the territory. I remember listening to the two of them talk poo poo about register jockeys and Starbucks employees and being really annoyed by how entitled and shitheaded they were being. But I appreciate that they don't edit that out, either.

They're hilarious, entertaining guys to hear have a conversation, but that doesn't mean that they're always right, or that they're a couple of saints.

This hits the nail on the head in my opinion. For all of the moments where they rub me the wrong way, there's like 9 more where I'm laughing my rear end off or getting a warm feeling in my chest. After reading that tumblr thing I'm pretty confused by how an English graduate just figured out that there are legitimate criticisms of their characters .

tbh You can take that blog both ways. There is a lot of whiny bullshit in there but some parts of it makes sense and seems like they had a pretty lovely time of it. They do raise some good points and I think offhandedly going 'oh internets el oh el' might be missing the point.

I mean, the show does have a lot of homophobic, crazy weird poo poo about women and drugs and poor people and technology and it's hard to draw the line of what is irony and what is the guys real opinions. One of my first posts here was asking if they ever stop calling people Fruits, which, you know, they do, but (and I'm still going through the back catalog here) it's not exactly rare I come across one of them saying some backwards rear end poo poo or whatever. Jonathan does come off as someone who thinks hes way smarter than he is, for example.

Obviously the guys aren't perfect. They are funny dudes and I, by and large, enjoy the show enough to listen to 128 hours of it so far. But if someone picked up on all the pretty negative stuff the show does and decided, combined with some bad experiences, to stop listening, I could understand that.

Weather or not posting about it online is a good plan or not, I don't know.

also just fyi she didn't actually punch the wall.

I'm not really the type of UYD fan who thinks of them as perfectly always on-point awesome dudes, I'm often laughing at them as well as with them, plus I've had enough fleeting glances at the UYD forum to figure that the criticisms regarding its members are probably valid...but "pretentious hypersensitive twee artsy/writer person on Tumblr" is possibly one of the worst internet archetypes I've seen as of late. I'm sure they've been around for ages but I only just started noticing them in the last few months. A B.A. in English and a page full of tired memes and GIFs, huh? Color me totally and utterly surprised! Sure didn't see that coming!

I just skimmed through that melodramatic mess, but you could pretty much see the true typical colors of this particular internet character that tend to come up once they started getting into talk of inflated egos and who's a failure and who's a success and blahblahblah. I know the whole jaded "ITS JUST THE INTERNET MAN!!!!!" thing is a tired cliché not necessarily applicable to everything, but that's a lot of serious business ranting and spent time/effort in regards to comedy podcast rage. Maybe it's just me, but if/when UYD no longer make me laugh or happen to offend me or whatever, I'm pretty sure I'd just like...stop listening to them and not make big melodramatic essays about it for the purpose of some weird internet vendetta and/or seeking reassuring back-patting/reblogs from my friends? What's with the insistence of some people on the internet to make their departures/exits/changes of heart/etc. from things such big self-important scenes?

It's hilarious, because in the same super-serious weird Tumblr posts about how disappointed/horrified/mortified they are in a free comedy podcast betraying them, they also display a total inability to sense the irony in asking things like "Why does UYD seem so averse to fans?"...you're kinda the answer to your own question, guys...

A bunch of drama about the tumblr fansite, UYD4L, is going down on the Facebook page (I'd post a link but my phone's not letting me; it's easy enough to find though) and one of the people who created that site wrote an essay about why she's no longer a fan of the show (here). I don't know how much truth there is to this since it's only one side of the story, and it certainly wouldn't keep me from listening to the show even if it was true, but I do agree that the official UYD forums can be kinda mean-spirited and cult-like (and annoying - everyone tries to talk like Seth and Jonathan). That's not Seth or Jonathan's fault, of course, but I'm glad that we have this thread to talk about the show rather than having to deal with those lovely forums.

Holy moley, this lady really uncovered the hidden truth about UYD (More like Uhh SHAM Dude) They make insensitive jokes about various groups?? Johnathan thinks he is smarter than he is and he says all kinds of inaccurate stupid things??? Well, I NEVER. You can count me out of this free comedy podcast yes sir.

But seriously, what is these people problem? I guess they just take the whole podcast way to seriously. UYD is basically just two guys talking to one another in a very freeform and unscripted and mostly unedited way. And also, every though you feel like you've "gotten to know them" after listening for a while, you gotta remember that they are both playing a character to a certain degree. Seth more than Johnathan obviously, but they are both doing it.

Johnathan is very aware that his long rants about science and psychology are pretty dumb and uninformed. I'm listening to the '70s episodes right now and he has talked about it several times.

I realize that, and I don't enjoy when Johnathan uses "human being" or anything like that, but it's sparse enough that I can look past that and enjoy the funny show instead of crying and trying to start a boycott because two guys recording their conversations don't have flawless worldviews.

The real question is, what was the present that Seth got her for her birthday the next year when she was the oldest person alive? It gets a STRONG reaction from Jonathan, and then tells Seth not to reveal it and that he'll post a picture of it. To this day I can't imagine what it could have been.
