Think I'm having a problem with Gilgabot. First playthrough, I had Black Mage, Summoner, Hunter, Samurai, on normal mode. Second playthrough which I'm on right now, which is hard mode, I had Knight...Summon, Hunter, Samurai. Am I just 'lucky' or is Gilgabot on his day off?

Bard is really busted. I knew it was good, but it just wrecks everything. Romeo's Ballad/Alluring Air works on almost every random encounter, Purobolos and Manticore, you can Alluring Air the Dragon Pods rendering that boss fight inert. Having a Hero Cocktail-chugging barehanded Chemist is just gravy, and !Mix is just silly.

It's kind of a bummer that I can't use Alluring Air to it's full potential, what with there being a Berserker in my party and all. Maybe I'll give it a test run while Galuf's having his World 2 adventures.

So my jobs are WHM/WHM/BRSK, and after a lot of trouble with Byblos I ground up to 19, wrecked him, and then had no trouble with the sand worm. I have Bartz and Galuf as berserkers, with the ladies healing and protecting. I had less of a problem with the soul cannon than I did with the flame throwers and missile launchers, mostly because my Berserkers seem to be in love with hitting the back row. Thankfully, the launchers on the Sol Cannon went down after only hitting Lenna and Butz with Old, and I healed Lenna right away with Esuna but didn't notice Butz for a while. That drat wolf hood gives him like 5 pixels of hair. Either way the cannon went down and Archaeoaevis was a complete joke. As long as there are no back row enemies, berserkers are a really, really strong class. And then I get my final job. Gilgabot posted:@ElliottSerbian can now use the Fire Job 'Beastmaster'. Congratulations! Sheep costumes! White Mage / White Mage / Berserker / Beastmaster Who thought hard mode would be so cruel?

I'm trying to decide if I really want Holy and Flare or not. I'm not even sure how I'd have to go about fighting Omniscient with Thief/Mystic Knight/Geomancer/Samurai. Like... !Gaia and hope for the best? Constant Dark Lamp deployment? Wait until he runs out of MP and then use physical attacks?

It should then be a simple matter of clubbing his face in with Mute Sword. I'm really looking forward to getting an all-purpose useful offensive sword Magic in Flare (although I see myself continuing to use Drain Sword more often).

FF13-3 should be a sim game where Sazh opens his own airship business and tries to raise enough money to build his own casino. The DLC could be a 15-minute cutscene where he constantly complains how old he is.

If you've finished and got your victory verified then you can re-register with the same account, I think, yeah. Though if you do that, you can't use your previous run for Omega and/or Shinryu any more. ...Which is why I went and did this first: I'm pretty sure Omega's impossible with my current party so I'm not even gonna bother trying on this run (well, trying again; gave it a shot already and I lasted somewhere in the region of 40 seconds). Hopefully I'll get something that lets me do it on my next attempt.

Hooooooooooo, what's that? Through the magic of 1000% frameskip and autofiring through all the story text, my second run was way the hell faster than the first. Peace, Neo-Treeguy. Berserker is good for the reasons we've already covered in this thread, and in the GBA version the final boss's dummy corpses are gone! So berserkers can just punch poo poo all day. This run was a total cakewalk, getting beastmaster and blue mage ensured that I could snap up the essential blue spells and gently caress right off to beat the game after grabbing 3 tablet-weapons which mostly went completely unused save for the magus rod. Avis Dragons in the final area also can be captured to poo poo out a Breath Wing, meaning an easy 9999 damage at the start of the final fight to all the parts. Could have captured 3, I guess, but having !Blue on everyone just felt too broken to pass up. Guess I'll see if I can #reghard for a third go this weekend after everything's processed. I wasn't even that big on FFV before this year, and suddenly wow!

This thread inspired me to go back to PSN and download the only FF8 that I have never played all the way through, Final Fantasy 8. I COULD play the game the way the developers intended, but I've heard time and time again that this is one of the most broken FF games if you do it right. I ask you, what's the way to break this game?

golden posted:This thread inspired me to go back to PSN and download the only FF8 that I have never played all the way through, Final Fantasy 8. Don't level. Learn the skill which turns enemies into cards instead of killing them thus 100% AP gains but 0% XP gains. The second you get he magic lamp use it to fight Diablos(?) and then master his enc-none power. You no longer have random battles and the game's difficulty is locked into place. Now you have two choices, play collectible card games forever or actually trudge through the story. I recommend the collectible card game option personally. If you decide you want to play the game you can cheat the exams to max out your money making power by just looking up the answers. Buy some tents with your new found wealth and convert them into curagas and junction to health then head to the beach by the garden and draw 99 waters and equip to strength. You are now more than powerful enough to coast through the next 3 disks un-opposed. Should you need more power play card games and convert cards into powerful magic. Should you wish to have fun just play the card game and gently caress off with the main quest until you want to battle new card players. Make sure to never agree to play with people's local rules so that you prevent their horrible spread. Barudak fucked around with this message at 18:25 on Jun 21, 2012 |

golden posted:This thread inspired me to go back to PSN and download the only FF8 that I have never played all the way through, Final Fantasy 8. There are really so many ways to do it that you may as well just check out an FAQ. But since its your first time I wouldn't bother. Everyone needs to experience that time where they overleveled their party, don't understand how to junction, have no magic to junction anyways and gets their poo poo pushed in by some random forest enemy. Here are a couple tips off the top of my head though: -Get Card Mod and use it. Carding enemies/playing Triple Triad is the easiest way to get good magic, which in turn is the easiest way to break the game. -Get the refining abilities. -Keep your levels low. Enemies stay at your level so there isn't much of a reason to level up if you don't have to (Carding enemies means that you don't get an EXP) -Don't worry about upgrading weapons until later. -In the first town you can find a vendor that sells tents. You can buy a bunch of tents an refine them into a bunch of high level healing spells. You can then junction these to your characters vitality and you'll have enough HP to last you the whole game.

golden posted:This thread inspired me to go back to PSN and download the only FF8 that I have never played all the way through, Final Fantasy 8. A few more tips: Quistis card -> Card Mod -> 3x Samantha Soul -> Time Mag-RF -> 180x Triple. Junction these to Strength on two characters (with 100/80 or 90/90 distributions), for either +70 and +56, or +63 and +63. Zell card -> Card Mod -> 3x Hyper Wrist -> use on three GFs you'll be keeping on different party members (e.g. Quetz, Shiva, Ifrit) -> one copy of Str +60% per party member. Combine these two and you're basically running around with endgameish Strength stats - and thus endgameish physical damage output, because FF8's damage formulas are purely stats and do not multiply in level or anything. And you can get these cards and refinement abilities super early on (like, a quarter to a third of the way through the first disc), and with minimal time investment. Another game-breaker: Gesper card -> Card Mod -> 1x Black Hole -> use to teach Degenerator to Quistis. This is a 100% guaranteed instant kill on nearly every type of random enemy in the game. There are quite a few other ways to beef yourself up and make yourself powerful early on, many of them involving cards, but they range from moderately to massively less time-efficient than the above options. And as it is, you're really loving overpowered just with the quick and efficient options. General playstyle game-breaker: Get someone to yellow (under 25%) HP in battle, then tap the switch turns button to, well, switch turns until they get their limit. (It's a random chance that can kick in whenever the command window comes up, which is checked for the respective character every time you switch turns to them.) You can thus spam limits every turn. Being at yellow HP isn't even all that dangerous if your max HP, your Vit (physical defense), and your Spr (magical defense) are respectable.

Kill your berserker (or to be more generous, don't revive them after they inevitably suicide, and hope they don't take too many others down with them). Once you're only eating attacks rather than attacks plus a constant stream of berserker-induced double counterattacks, set your bard (swift song) and chemist (lotsa stuff) to buffing. Or alternatively, just don't fight it. There are less aggravating ways of making money with that team.

Well, world 2 clear. Thanks for mentioning Electrocute's "1/4 max HP" thing, I never knew that before and it really helped against Exdeath, who's an obstacle even for strong job builds. Stuck Release on my Dragoon and popped it as soon as he got low enough to double-attack, he only needed a K or so after that and still took down half my party. One of the nice touches in this game I hadn't noticed before, when you wake up in the Combined World there are no monster encounters around the castle. It really tries to pretend you beat the game for a moment.

I just barely eaked out a win against Twintania. Like, Faris survived with ~215 HP and everyone else was dead. Sometimes you can do amazing things when you just go for broke. And have Holy Spellsword. And an Enhancer. And Hermes Sandals. And an Aegis Shield.

PhilippAchtel posted:So what are some of the better mixes? Notable: *All the "X Breath" mixes do damage equal to your max HP in whatever element (Dark, Holy, or Fire/Lightning/Ice for Dragon) *Dragon's Kiss gives the target the Dragon and Heavy flags. Heavy flag is what bosses have that make them immune to all sorts of poo poo like gravity attacks, Maelstrom, etc. *The Turtle Shell/Maiden's Kiss mix does absolute boatloads of damage and heals you for 100% of that. (Don't use it on Undead) *Level mixes are incredible, as they cut 20% hit off of status spells, add a good 4-5 multipliers to most attacks (or a cool 3000 damage to Gil Toss), all sorts of stuff. *The "Haste, Blink, Berserk" Mix, Kiss of Blessing (Holy Water/Maiden's Kiss) bypasses Berserk immunity. This means you can berserk any boss and break their AI scripting (Exdeath form 1 won't unhide Neo-Exdeath when you kill him, for example).
