I don't really think the NWN module tools are too out of date; After all a lot of what you would learn while doing it would still be relevent to most modern day RPGs. but it would help to delve into modern engines and RPGs as well. Skyrim is an interesting choice, but it's an FPS and the 3rd dimension always seems to add a layer of fucktitude to the tools... I would look at games like Titan quest/NWN 2/Diablo 3 maybe even Starcraft 2 given the power of those tools.

Don't bother with the SC2 editor unless you want to go make SC2 maps or you want to drive yourself batshit insane IMO (mostly kidding, it is a really great editor but it is only slight less complicated than visual studio. not a great starter tool)

NWN2 is a pretty solid toolset and quite easy to use. The "great" thing about NWN2 is that most of the content is 100% scripted, including all the spells, items, quests, etc. Great for you as a modder, not for developers who have to use it, but hey. Anyways, the fact that it's scripted means you can really easily dig in and find out how poo poo works. Fancier tools (like Skyrims, or SC2s, or almost anything really) are absolutely more reliable/better for actual game making, but can be a bitch to learn because the internal connections between things you are building in the editor, and how those things actually function, isn't as black and white as it is with a script.

Hey, congrats! The studio I work for did some animation work for ASM, so we experienced a shade of that feeling today when we noticed the launch videos and reviews.

Amid cries of "I animated that!", I was content in knowing that the MotionBuilder tool I wrote to streamline the process of adding blinking animation to characters in a small fraction of that game's cutscenes meaningfully contributed to its success :v:

If it is any consolation many free to play business models have as much potential for evil except that the games that use them are playable from home, often embedded in a service many people already use* and completely unregulated. Plus when someone wins they don't even get anything tangible other than a badass dopamine hit.

The public hasn't caught on yet so try bringing up these talking points the next time someone implies they think gaming is evil. I mean I guess there are no stories about Zynga ditching people in the deserts of Nevada, but I don't think that really applies to digital games anyway.

So far the two companies I'm interviewing with have gotten back with the same news: They will both let me know next steps in mid-July. For one that could be an offer, for the other that would be scheduling an on-site interview.

In the meantime I've interviewed with another studio, and I'm waiting to hear back from them this week.

That's what the guys at Radical do.
They hire a lot of folks to fill up the studio, put out a game, and fire a huge chunk of their employees.
Then they'll fill up the studio again, make another game and fire everybody again.
This is what? the 4th or 5th time they've done this now?

They're asses, and I hope no one actually goes to work for them again.

It would be nice if there was a site for developers where we could track which companies have a pattern of hiring and firing excessively. I know it happens a lot, but not all studios do this. It'd be nice to know when looking at offers whether the company is likely to lay everyone off at the end of each project.

EgonSpengler

That's a death sentence for the studio. Most likely a number of the people are already allocated to projects in development, and they get to keep their jobs until the games are done.

"In-sourced" projects are stop gaps, and almost never end well for the satellite studio.
