Thanks. I've been really happy with them in the couple of days I've driven on them. The road noise is whisper-quiet in comparison with the BFGs, naturally; they seem pretty responsive, though I haven't had a chance to test them in the wet since it's dry as a bone out here in CO. As a comparison, this is what it looked like with the BFGs:

Both the BFGs and the Falkens are 31x1050R-15/C1. I don't have a lift on my Ranger, nor do I have the torsion bars cranked.

hey hey holy poo poo someone actually got pictures of me wheeling something interesting.   All mid action shots - there was a series of rocks further down the hill that was difficult due to my wheelbase, so once I got past that I wanted to see if I could make it in one run without stopping. I did.

it was a blast. You don't want this truck though. You want a rust free one from the southwest with what I have on it, which is a really mild build... 33" treadwright ATs (get the MTs instead), crummy steelies, 4.5" rusty's rear SUA leafs (the full packs, not the AALs), 4.5" front coils of some sort, big dumb bumpers I built for 150 bucks each in metal, a manual transmission, a rear 8.25" from a late model XJ with 3.55 gears and swapped ZJ disc brakes, a front dana 30 with 3.55s, an aussie locker, and big-ujoint shafts from a late model XJ, and a V8 ZJ tie rod. Pretty sure that's everything I have put on the truck so far. With good luck you could build what I have for well under 2k - I have 3500 into it now I think and it's a beat up, rotted out junkheap.

I've got nothing left to weld them to  When I finish collecting parts it's getting a new frame, floors, and 2x6 box tube rocker replacements though. Don't think I will manage to wreck those.

So today I bought my second 4wd, a 1990 Toyota Hilux with the 2.8l N/A Diesel and a 5spd It's in pretty nice condition, had the motor rebuilt 120xxxkms ago, recent respray (though there is overspray on some stuff) new radiator, glow plugs and 2 new A/T tyres on the front. It's also coming with another set of wheels and tyres. Guy has a Job down in Sydney with a company car and his flights are booked for Monday, so it's all mine for $2500AUD.

Always Late in a 2.8! Tidy looking bus- Why did they delete the side indicators considering that the cops will lOVE you for that! Loads of potential there- a turbo will wake the 2.8D up a bit as long as you dont go silly with the boost, and if you get bored of that the 3.0TD 1KZ-TE motor will definately fit in there, and apparently the 126kw 3.0D4D motor from the new hilux's will fit in there too, tho wiring it up is a nightmare!

Probably going to keep it mild in terms of upgrades, at least in the short term, trying to fix up my Valiant first, then will probably at least get a snorkel, maybe a turbo in the future, I'll see how liveable the lack of power is, hoping it's not too bad, i'm used to slow coming from a volvo 240 now, and have had a turbo diesel jackaroo with about 60hp and a 4spd box (topped out at 90km/hr)

Tried it flat out in 4th going down a hill on the highway, managed to just peg it at 105kph. Or a grounding issue somewhere?

Went to a trail cleanup/trail cutting day at one of the local private 4x4 trail systems. Showed up late as usual, which gave me an excuse to see how fast I could go... No pics of my jeep, was too busy wheeling. Here's a badass yota though. (click all pics for really big really blurry cellphone camera special edition)  This is deceptive. It's easily past 40 degrees, walking up this rock face is difficult and walking down it is worse.  Made it to the top no problem.   This used to be an XJ. Some of the firewall and floor and the front frame rails (mostly) remain, the rest is a tube buggy. This is also almost too steep to walk up, it took him quite a while to get past this rock.   Not sure what size tires those are, but at least 37s or so.  So aside from another reason to post my truck as it was waxed and detailed last weekend, where is a good place to buy off-road lights? I am always operating on a limited budget, but I would really like to mount a pair of lights in the center of my grill, on either side of the "GMC." Not only would it give me that AWESOME RALLY/BAJA LOOK, but I really like good visibility and my current headlights are pretty lovely. Took my Jeep out wheelin for the first time ever! Went to this place in Ocala that is an old quarry that they let grow out and there are some awesome trails. A lot of stuff I never thought I'd get up and down in my stock Jeep but the guys I went with knew their poo poo and showed me the ropes and I didn't get stuck once. Had an awesome time, super impressed with what the Jeep could do and can't wait to go back!

If you are looking at lighting around the PIAA/HELLA/Lightforce price rage, you may want to consider the RIGID dually series LED Lights. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...KJ5ZBJTHD57D702 The kit is around $170 US for 2. There's also the dually D2 which is a more powerful version but those are around $300 I think for 2. Another option with the LED lights is go with a semi decent import version like vision X which is a bit cheaper than rigid but the quality and warranty isn't the same. You can probably hit up summit racing or 4 wheel parts websites to see what your options are.

I got out and got dirty (dusty) on 30-series 21" Pirelli P-Zeros:  Exploration at 10,000 feet! ... This was largely ill-advised. What started as a dirt road turned into a fire road, and then that turned into something less well-maintained and more full of sharp rocks. My desire to see if Google Maps actually would, in fact, lead us to what it thought was our destination ended with my wife glaring at me and and me turning us around after half an hour and a confused woman filming a yoga video in the middle of nowhere telling us nicely that we were now on private property. We survived, the car was fine (with a tiny chunk out of the rim protector on one of the tires, whatever) - and that was how the Timbo got its first offroading session.

Ok, another retarded mismatched tyres question from me! We have a knackered rear tyre on our ford ranger (european Mazda based one, crew can diesel). I'm going to replace both the rear tyres but I don't know if I need to replace the fronts to match. Rears will be new Hankook rf10's which seem to get good reviews, fronts are part worn Runway Enduro a/t's. It's RWD most of the time with a stick to engage 4hi / 4lo. Will that kind of transmission care about mismatched tyres, since it will only be 4x4 on dirt? Obviously matching tyres all round will be best but I'd have to persuade my boss to spend the extra cash! Edit: It does a fair amount of road miles, 400 for every 10 used off road, and even then we usually don't use 4wd, but having proper off road tyres are still handy for the few times we use them. stump fucked around with this message at 16:29 on Jul 23, 2012 |

If you only use the 4wd off-tarmac, it won't actively hurt having the different sizes front to rear, but it's not best practice. Any surface worth using 4wd on will have enough slip to prevent wind-up. Now, I made a point of replacing all four tyres on the Jeep, and would have done so regardless of wear, because it's got gerotor-activated clutchpacks in the transfer case and both axles, so I can't get away from that. On part-time 4x4s I've owned, I never worried about a front-rear mismatch. If you're intending to keep the thing, you might as well get all four done. Those runways are something like £150 a pair brand new, and they'll wear out eventually, so if you change them when they're half-worn you're only really chucking out £75 "worth" of tyres. Also, if he's telling you to go to Kwikfit or whatever, you can do a lot better by ordering direct from Camskill or Oponeo or somewhere and getting them fitted locally.

The only exception to that I can think of is slickrock/sandstone (like Moab, etc) where you want low range but have to put it in 4x4 to get that. I guess a 2Lo conversion would get what you'd need, but it costs more than a replacement set of tires...

Good points, I'll suggest we get new fronts ASAP then. I'm be pretty keen to getting rid of these Runways will hopefully improve it's handling a little on wet A and B roads - not that this thing will ever handle like anything but a blancmange. I'm in Scotland so any slabs of rock tend to be less than the wheelbase long - loose rocks, mud and gravel are the norm. I'm getting the two rears replaced tomorrow at a local place which happened to have them in stock, as I've got about 600 miles to do this week in it and I don't trust the spare. When I get back I'll have a look at getting some matching fronts online. I've also got to get a new stud ASAP as I wrecked one putting the spare on - bolts had been impact gunned into oblivion!

Yes, I use 2 HID Lightforce 240's and a bunch of the Rigid dually D2's [they are one step up from the dually I listed above, it's the same enclosure but it has 6 emitters instead of 4]. If you plan to use them for driving lights on roads I'd get the spots, floods are more useful if you are off roading especially in wide open areas where you want a nice wide path lit up in case you need to dodge an obstacle, but they have less throw, although either light is pretty impressive. Ideally I'd use my normal headlights as a spot, and buy my first set of off road lights as a diffuse/flood to augment my oem lights. If you get multiple sets over time you can start with a flood light, then combine them with a second set of spots, and use diffuse lights for the rear/sides. I have a mix of halogen/HID and the LED, they all exist in slightly different color temperature range so they blend together pretty nicely at night.
