That is a Harrier II+ out of MCAS Cherry Point. VMA-223 The Bulldogs. Maybe being the former home of McDonnell Aircraft means you get a harrier for your airshow either military or private. The rules for the USAF make little distinction between military and private (or public non-military, whatever) airshows...it just has to be judged a worthwhile enough event to justify sending the jets. I'd imagine the USMC policy is similar. Nice pictures, by the way. In sadder news, they recovered the bodies of the two Turkish crewmembers of that F-4 that was shot down last month. Also, the search for the two missing crewmembers from that Tornado mishap off of Scotland has been called off, and when it resumes it will be a recovery operation...and one of the two survivors who were recovered earlier has died in the hospital.

So, i'm guessing helis are welcome here, right? Because I fanboy'd out over these two OH-58 Kiowas last night, they were doing an airshow over the lake prior to last night's fireworks show: Crazy banking moves and lots of high-speed passes over the water and the boats below, the blue and white one skimmed just over the top of a few pontoon boats a few time. It was awesome.

This is a lake just beyond my place of residence. Just about every day once May rolls around, I'll be woken up by the sounds of float planes doing float plane stuff. These guys fly so low over my roof that I can easily hit them with tennis balls on their approach in (I don't). I am super envious that there are people in this world who legitimately think, "Should I take the plane to Anchorage or the car?!"

My mom and I once hiked the Butte and were standing on the top when we heard some loud wind. It turned out to be four fighters flying to the bases from the Knik Glacier area. They came by us at eye level and right when they were alongside one peeled off and did a missing man formation. I can only assume they were practicing since I don't think there were any funerals in the area.

HeyEng posted:I am super envious that there are people in this world who legitimately think, "Should I take the plane to Anchorage or the car?!" My old boss up here owned a Super Cub; long story but he was flying with the Aggressors up north to keep his currency, so he would have to travel up there TDY basically once a month. Once he bought his plane and got it airworthy he pretty much stopped driving there TDY and would just fly himself up there. One day he was tooling along and his engine quit (trouble with the carburetor I think), so he dead sticked it down onto the Parks. Some Army dude happened to be driving along, so they tinkered for a bit and got the engine running again, the Army guy went and blocked off traffic, and off he went...only to have the engine quit again on final to Eielson. One IFE and one more dead-stick landing later he just had to call for a tow off the runway. The real kicker is that a few months after this he successfully flew the Super Cub all the way down to Texas. Anyone who is going to do this, I'd particularly recommend doing it during a Red Flag, as you are almost guaranteed to see some jets doing some CDS or sandbag drops...next one is in August. Since we're having Anchorage chat, anyone know what's up with the C-119 that was parked by the Everts Air Cargo terminal at Ted Stevens? Saw it tonight as my flight was landing, would it be one of those two that are based out of Palmer? Speaking of Everts, I never get tired of seeing their DC-6s...I make a point of stopping to watch whenever I see one tooling around the airfield here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1Rpa-UL_Qo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FT9YDyce4wc

One of those two was stranded in Anchorage for years while they scavenged parts to fix the one stuck on Kodiak. http://www.flyingboxcar.com/ When I was at UAF I used to love when the Everts C-46s took off. With a full load they would climb so slowly you could just about count rivets as they passed over the campus hill.

I went back to the local air and space museum, and had the time to go inside today. 2 things I noticed: the interior displays were vastly improved since the last time I was there and they were doing poo poo tons of restoration/preservation to the planes outside. First, look at this plane as seen in August 2011. Basically everything was having the cockpits and other parts sealed off from the elements, all new paint on the landing gears, holes patched up. It was wonderful. Now onto other stuff. BONE DSC_0587.jpg by MrDespair, on Flickr DAT rear end DSC_0597.jpg by MrDespair, on Flickr This was one of the engines used in the B-1A program. Only 23 built (this isn't a replica). The wiki article says that, but it has absolutely no citation and as far as I know the F-22 was never nuclear certified. There are plans to certify the F-35 (eventually) as a replacement for the F-16 in the tactical role employing B-61s, but nothing with the Raptor, and as far as I know there never was since up until well after the end of the Cold War the Raptor was supposed to be a pure air supremacy machine, in the vein of the F-15C...the air to ground mission was added in well after the conclusion of the ATF competition. Was that at the Ellsworth museum?
