This. I have no allegiance to Adobe and I'd be happy if I woke up tomorrow and all Flash was replaced with HTML5 that worked at least as well. But plenty of sites still rely on Flash and that's just the way it is.
Which basically stems from websites putting commercials in before the video. As far as I know this still isn't possible in HTML5. So rather than giving mobile viewers the video without the commercials, they'd rather just not give them the video at all.

DO YOU HEAR THAT? THAT'S THE SOUND OF ME PATTING MYSELF ON THE BACK.

There's also the issue with DRM, and back end infrastructure, and creation tools, and talent.

HTML5 video is still in it's infancy and it doesn't appear to be growing up too quickly. People know flash, they have the tools for flash, and they've probably invested a good chunk of change in their flash infrastructure. They aren't going to easily toss it for a standard that doesn't give them everything they need yet.

Ironically, the company in the best position to transition people away from flash is Adobe. If they include more and more HTML5 tools alongside their flash ones, it will help people convert.

the worst is my bank whose (android) app literally launches the browser to the mobile version of their website, but the URL is formed in such a way that there is no chance someone could just type it in. After that you can just bookmark it, but it's ridiculous that they even make you download the app in the first place.

No, not at all.

Where are you kids reading all this "flash is dead" nonsense? Most of my local TV news stations *just* updated their websites to support streaming flash video, so I really doubt they're going to convert to another format anytime in the near future.

Regions bank? Or are there more banks doing that now? There used to be a third party app that worked great, then they disabled it saying they'd have an android app soon. Then they released it and it only opens the browser to their mobile Site. Supposedly an employee was posting in the reviews in the Market /Play store saying an actual app would be released really soon. A year later it's still opening the browser.

I don't know if this is a weird coincidence or something could be messed up with my phone. For the past couple weeks now I check the market for app updates and I am told there are none. Six hours later I check again and it'll find 6+ app updates. Is it just a coincidence? I used to be able to check every day and find one or two apps that need updates but it seems to come in large batches now.

Yeah I really like that app too but when I moved from stock to CM9 it had the problem that everything was sorted by install date instead of publish date (meaning everything had the same date) and then it also wanted to keep all the system apps that were modified and therefore not on the market in there too. You can't hide apps from the main list (despite saying you're not going to update them) so it became essentially worthless to me.

I had a conversation with the developer and while he conceded it was a problem he had no interest in adding the ability to sort by publish date and so I stopped using it.

So this morning I discovered that the new 4.1 (edit:4.0.4 I guess?) Alarm app is stupid. You used to be able to just tap the screen anywhere to snooze, now it's only a square floating in the center, and if you miss, it goes to your home screen and you can't snooze it anymore and it keeps going off!

Oh, and you also used to have to swipe to dismiss, and now that's just a simple button press just below snooze!

Helpful for forcing you to wake up and not snooze the alarm and/or oversleep by accidentally dismissing the alarm

Gentle Alarm

The thing about it is the gimmick, the pre-alarm, I don't know if it actually works but I did notice after a week or so of living with it that I was waking up a lot better. Sometimes with the pre-alarm, most of the time with the regular alarm, but every time it was easier to get up. I still think it sounds hokey but I went into it thinking it'd be dumb and disabled within a couple days but now I'm swearing by it and the wife (who is horrible about waking up) started using it and it's working for her too. Definitely worth the money.

C IS FOR COOKIE!

The relevant part.

quote:

Beginning August 15 th we will use the configuration settings in the Google Play Store to limit continued access to Flash Player updates to only those devices that have Flash Player already installed. Devices that do not have Flash Player already installed are increasingly likely to be incompatible with Flash Player and will no longer be able to install it from the Google Play Store after August 15 th .

The easiest way to ensure ongoing access to Flash Player on Android 4.0 or earlier devices is to use certified devices and ensure that the Flash Player is either pre-installed by the manufacturer or installed from Google Play Store before August 15 th . If a device is upgraded from Android 4.0 to Android 4.1, the current version of Flash Player may exhibit unpredictable behavior, as it is not certified for use with Android 4.1. Future updates to Flash Player will not work. We recommend uninstalling Flash Player on devices which have been upgraded to Android 4.1.

Starting 8/15 you will only be able to install Flash from the Play Store if your phone already had it installed and you're on 4.0 or lower. There will be no more brand new installations at all after 8/15 and no updates for 4.1 and later. In other words, mobile Flash is dead except for legacy devices and installations, and there's no telling how long that will last.

Considering how many people are stuck on GB (and Froyo) until they upgrade their phones thanks to lovely manufacturers that drag their heels on updating software, flash won't be going anywhere for at least another year.

I know Gentle Alarm gets a lot of praise (I own it also) but I really prefer Alarm Clock Xtreme. I find the layout of ACX much more cleaner and logical. Plus the Captcha to dismiss is a PITA that will get you out of bed. I have mine set for 3 hard math questions to snooze, each snooze decreases time by 1 minute with a maximum of 3 snoozes. Captcha to dismiss. Works every time.
