You should probably PM said person. No point getting all mysterious about it (I know who it is since I'm releasing on the same platform in the coming week and reading the thread, hurb). After all, we should help each other out without making them find out the errors of their mistakes the hard way. I mean, we'd all love an advert for our extradition from the forums but hey... There's a surprising number of people who get game jobs, post about it on internet forums, and get themselves in trouble at work. While not directly game related, I think there was someone who was a new Google employee that got fired for posting a picture of his uniform on Reddit. Yeah, here is an article on it http://www.dailydot.com/news/google-employee-fired-reddit-post/

I don't mind saying it's about me; I offered to gift copies of my game to people in the iOS games thread that seem to have very strong opinions about it without actually playing it. I can see how that might be taken in a way I don't really intend. Edit: Didn't break into the industry in the last year, been posting in these threads for years.

I derailed the Runescape thread for a couple days by semi-accidentally revealing that I worked at that company(someone thought our CEO's APV was a tank, man it's not a tank it has no gun!), but it died down once they realised I knew absolutely nothing about Runescape itself. Maybe someday there'll be a Transformers Universe thread...

I think it's unfortunate that companies have to maintain such tight control on message and communication with fans. I understand why, but at the same time it would be really nice to be able to simply engage with people who are interested in the work you are doing. Obviously some companies are more relaxed than others, but most of the big studios/publishers maintain careful control in my experience.Commander Hen posted:You joke but Disney lawyers are some of the scariest bunch on the block. I upgraded to an Intuos 5M tablet. I have usually been very vague about what I do and where I work, but in the one case that I have talked about a game I worked on I tried to sort of take the criticism, acknowledge it, and explain my thoughts on why the sort of nonsensical features they asked about existed without taking it personally. I'm working on a few things now but I get extremely hesitant to talk about anything specific simply because the things I work on tend to have a pretty significant chance of never seeing the light of day. Especially my personal pet project, which although it is playable and taking shape and therefore I feel the need to show it off to pretty much anyone that could ever care, I have resisted as it is both unpolished and being made at an admittedly very slow pace for how simple it is. Once I mention something and try to get any interest in it I feel pressured/obligated to go full steam on it which I really don't have the resources to do. I have seen a TON of "Hey check out this thing I am working on in my spare time" projects and while some have been cool, none of them ever got finished. I'm hoping that instead I can be the guy who says "Hey check out this game we will be releasing on X date" or "Hey, I made a game, check it out".

xgalaxy posted:The problem is games are getting more expensive to buy and the hours you get out of them continue to drop. The majority of the single player games out now can be completed in under 8 hours. That's about $9 per hour of enjoyment which is better than a movie but I wouldn't call it cheap. Y'know, people have been saying that exact thing for about 10 years now, and I don't think it's ever really been correct. There are occasional games that will pad themselves out to 15-30 hours, but they're either monolith productions or just full of grind and copy-pasted elements. Honestly, some of my favorite games of all time can be completed in well under 8 hours, and the fact that they don't drag on (And have reply value) is what makes them classics. Portal, for instance, had some people reporting first playthroughs of 4-6 hours, and that's easily one of the best games this generation. Hell, look at all the NES/SNES games that you remember fondly, and you can complete a lot of those in 2 hours or less (And yes, they used to cost ~$60 as well). I just think we should be focusing more on replayability rather than the first-run time, because it's easy to pad out a first run at the expense of replayability, and ultimately that just screws people out of another X hours of fun. I'd happily pay $60 for a short game that I'm likely to replay a lot, but I'll um and err about paying for a long game that I'll never want to touch again once I've finished it. (Then again I'm still bitter because I worked on a game that was incredibly fun but only had 4 hours of content, and then we were forced by the publishers to up the average first playthrough to 8 hours and it just turned into a grindy, unfun mess)

Aliginge posted:Not dying out, but it's pretty undeniable that a large broad collection of studios are consolidating into a few gigantic players. If anything the competition combined with the economic downturn is destroying the middle of the industry, leaving the largest, most budget-heavy studios to devour the As and double-A studios that don't quite make the millions as the smallest studios attempt to carve out their own little niche and not directly competing with the big boys. I think the biggest threat is the difficulty in scaling up. 20 years ago Carmack wrote Doom with like 5 other guys. 9 years ago they wrote Doom 3 with something like 50 people, maybe. Now they have ~100+ people and it's really difficult to manage all that, keep efficient communication, etc. Carmack wants to sit in his cave and code poo poo all day, but they need him to try and lead/manage. I would imagine companies like Blizzard either went through or are going through something similar. Especially when you're owned by some larger entity that doesn't know jack poo poo about games.

Yeah, it sucks not being able to post about the game I work on when it's discussed here, but it's way better than people taking me to task for everything they don't like about it. I get enough of that from our own forums -- I don't need it here, too. Also I can't get baited into ragefixing things. As for next gen systems... I started typing a post here and then realized that it was almost word-for-word what I thought about this current generation of consoles back in 2005. The industry has been moving away from "better looks better game" for a while, and I think we're seeing the top of the curve for "more features better game," too. We're going to see some major companies fall in this upcoming transition, like we have in each previous one. Some companies will still succeed despite themselves, and others will fail due to factors outside their control. It's going to be interesting.
