VaultAggie posted:Robocop I never actually saw this movie growing up. I'm sure my parents kept me away for how violent it is. That said, after watching this and the original Total Recall a few months ago, I think I'm probably done with 80s action movies. Don't get me wrong, they're both products of their time (along with Commando, Rambo, and most other 80s action movies) but maybe I'm just not attuned for the raw violence anymore. I can see the appeal and the still-current messages being communicated in Robocop. I actually think those are quite excellent. But it's still a super-violent action film. I will say that there are still plenty of 80s action movies that still hold up today (Terminator and to a lesser extend, Predator). But most are just raw violence vehicles.

I watched OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies last night and enjoyed it immensely. It's from the same team behind The Artist, and it's a similar sort of loving genre recreation, only this is much goofier in its spoofing of old spy films. Jean Dujardin really seems to be channeling Frank Drebin in his performance, and he displays that same kind of serious buffoonery that Leslie Nielsen commanded so wonderfully in the Naked Gun films. How does the sequel, Lost in Rio, compare?

I thought Lost In Rio was better. Cairo, Nest of Spies ended up being too long and slightly too legitimate of a spy story. They're both good though and I hope they make more. I love Dujardin's "spy pose" when running.

From the titles of each episode to the music, to the characters, to the attitude, to the pacing its all the loving same. The best evidence for this is the characters Charlie and Bubbles. Charlie dresses up as green man, Bubbles dresses up as the Green Bastard. Both are dumb but lovable and get dragged into the gang's scheme's against their will. Both love animals and make their living by working with their hands. Both have lovely families and rely on their friends for support. I think you're kinda stretching here. Both have similar styles of humor, and it wouldn't surprise me if Rob and Glenn were fans of Trailer Park Boys, but I'd hardly call It's Always Sunny a "ripoff" of Trailer Park Boys.

24 is interesting, because they somehow went from one of the best seasons of the show (5) to probably one of the worst seasons of any show to ever air in television history (6). Yeah, Season 6 of 24 is that bad.

Season 6 just blew its load wayyy too early. They started off really loving intense, detonating a nuke in the suburbs of LA within the first few episodes. Then it just kind of fizzled out after that. I think there was a DVD released of just the first 4 episodes of that season as kind of a teaser, so if you watch that, you'd think "Holy poo poo, this is incredible! Where the hell are they going to go from here?!", and the answer turns out to be "nowhere".

Another problem is that there don't seem to be any real repercussions to the fact that a loving NUKE JUST WENT OFF ON US SOIL. Sure, it sets up the whole "going to war" plot, but it's like everyone just forgot that, "Oh yeah, a nuke went off in the suburbs today". I mean, the entire plot of season 2 is centered around stopping a nuke, and season 6 just treats it like it's no big deal. Season 7 and 8 kind of started picking up the pieces, but by that point it just felt like it was trying to walk again after breaking every bone in its body. It also took it's "pro-torture" politics to a whole new level, and pretty much made the entire series about that. By the end of the series every character you cared about is dead except for Chloe and Jack. And in a fairly depressing manner, but surprisingly realistic representation of how he should behave after everything that has happened, Jack is left a shambling shell of a human being that's just completely beat. He is destroyed by the end of the series, everybody he has ever cared about has been murdered and his country has betrayed him and he just doesn't care about anything anymore. It's like some existential destruction of the soul, or at the very least like a Lars Von Trier film. It's really kind of heartbreaking to watch after having stuck with the series for that long.

Vampire Boys I found this movie about a year ago becuase of netflix streaming. Since everyone here can watch it and a lot of you are looking for something off the beaten path, I'd like to point out this hidden gem. This is not a gag poster, the movies probably extremely close to whatever you're imagining. This is essential a gay vampire romance film. That's not actually the funny part though. Whats funny is the terrible acting, the weird "deep" dialogues, and the amount of screen time devoted to vampire abs. The story is clearly meant to go along with the Twilight trend, only with gay college students, but for the life of me I can't tell if its meant to be at all ironic in that aspect. At least there's a more sexual tension between the leads in this than in the Twilight Saga, so much so in fact that it feels like this whole movie desperately wants to be a soft core porn- and gets so close, so many times, but each time it retreats back into "generic romance" territory (Though, for fair warning, there is a dick shot). Personally, I think would actually function a whole lot better if it was made into a porn. It can be hard to cope with the almost Birdemic levels of bad audio going on through the movie, and it doesn't look great, but it if I had to guess these are probably student filmmakers here, and I want to at least give them some credit for effort- I've seen worse. Like I said though, its hard for me to give a final judgement on a films quality when I can't tell how seriously it's taking itself. this can be a hilarious film to watch with friends, as long as everyone's comfortable watching something that borders on gay porn.

Well, Tony's still alive, but rotting in federal prison. So many people were pissed that they turned him into a villain in season 7, but it was a pretty natural progression of his personality. I hope they get a move on with the 24 movie, cuz Kiefer isn't getting any younger.

I watched an impressive indie thriller/drama called The Escapist last night. I only checked it out because Brian Cox was in it but maybe I was out of the loop because apparently it was the debut feature from the guy who did Rise of the Planet of the Apes last summer. You can kind of figure out where the story is going but the journey is done well enough that I enjoyed it alot.

Being a big sci-fi fan, I had watched a couple of episodes of battlestar galactica, and was liking it. Followed that up by a couple episodes of Louie, which didn't really grab me. Then I figured I would try watching an episode of breaking bad. I quickly forgot about battlestar galactica, and have been doing nothing but watching breaking bad for the past couple of days. I was one of those guys who avoided BSG for the longest time mostly because of its rabid fanbase. When I started watching about two months ago, I was honestly amazed to see that the first episode was some of the best, most convincing sci-fi that I had seen. From both a production and story standpoint, it was amazingly refined. And the show just keeps getting better until it plateaus around the end of season 3. So if you're on the fence about it and think sci-fi can at times be interesting, definitely give it a shot. But yeah, finish the Breaking Bad binge because that's about equivalent (maaaybe a bit higher) in quality, and season 5 starts Sunday sucka. EDIT: -Atom- posted:I had the same feeling until they landed on New Caprica and settled in after Balter won the first election. Well, the climax of the New Caprica plotline, "Exodus," is widely hailed as one of the best BSG episodes. And although season 4 gets a bit rocky in terms of how deep the mythology goes, the series finale is definitely worth it. f#a# fucked around with this message at 15:38 on Jul 11, 2012 |
