Counterpoint: When have Lagunitas released a "sucky" IPA? Their normal IPA is 6.2%, it's not like 4.9% is a drastic drop.

Is 4.9% even 'session'?

And Founder's All Day IPA really grew on me after the second time I had it. If I didn't have a mini fridge half full of Daisy Cutter right now that's probably what I'd be drinking.

I think it's 50/50 with their IPAs. Holiday Sucks is the best, but their regular IPA is not good. Maximus is decent. Hop Stoopid is alright.

I'm just bummed because this is their "mystery release" of the year. I was hoping for Sirius or Mango Stoopid or something exciting. Not a watered-down version of a year-round product.

Beers in the sub 5% range tend to have very little body in my tastes and IPA is a style that calls for low body - when you put that together, I've had a lot of beers in this style that end up tasting like hoppy water, with very little complexity and a harsh upfront bitterness to cover up the lack of malt backbone. I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm just saying most attempts I've tried of this are like that.

Milds and dry-stouts like Guinness, etc. have a lot of specialty malts to fill their malt profile out but I've just found that most attempts to make IPAs out of beers in that range don't work that well.

I had a pint of Hill Farmstead's Edward Pale Ale the other day, and it kicked the poo poo out of a ton of IPAs I've had in terms of hoppiness at a 5.2% ABV. People are putting out great low ABV hoppy beers, and I really don't think Lagunitas are going to gently caress this up.

I like Lagunitas and session beers. But how different could this be from their 6.2% year-round IPA? Except of course it being inexplicably more expensive.

I'll try it, and I'll be pleased if it surprises me, but my hopes are very low. If it has some lovely tropical fruit notes, like the Holiday Sucks ale, then I will buy it. I take anti-depressants, so low-ABV beers don't put me off, because I don't have to drink very much at all to get affected. It's all about the taste for me.

Founders Dirty Bastard is in stores here now. I see it's an 8.5% Scotch Ale. It's not exactly Scotch ale weather even in Maine, but would it be worth picking up a few to age?

I don't know, I think for me there's kind of a threshold around 6%. Above that and I definitely feel drunker after a few than if I'm drinking cheap beer in the 5% neighborhood. Although I'm also pretty sure sugar/carb content affects alcohol metabolism rates, which would explain why a single barleywine at 12% feels stronger than two pilsners at 6%.

Sly Fox is opening its Pottstown tasting room tomorrow. Its right across the river from me, not even ten minutes, think I might have to grab lunch there tomorrow. Their website is promising about 20 things on tap, good lord. They might not be nearly as good as Victory, but they're still pretty good, and neighborhood-local is always an advantage.

The part that is amusing is that you were almost assuredly told what the price was when you attempted to make the purchase, at which point you still had the option to decline. But you still handed him the money!

Are there any good session IPAs with really strong tropical fruit or citrus notes?

The most notable off the top of my head is Intergalactic IPA by 7venth Sun here in the Tampa area. Now that's hardly distributed anywhere but I love it v:v:v. I think Terrapin does something like that and I don't hate it (unlike almost every other Terrapin beer). Okay maybe I haven't really had that many :sweatdrop:. But I love the idea of it!

I'm in Orlando and have never seen anything by 7venth Sun. I like the idea of it, too. I really wish the Lagunitas Daytime IPA came in 6-packs, rather than bombers.

Most Terrapin sucks, but I'm a sucker for that chocolate milk stout. Only like $6 for a 4-pack, too.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's basically given up on Terrapin. After the releasing of a $10 4 pack session beer I kind of saw that as a "gently caress you" to consumers and will more than likely keep passing over their year-round offerings. I plan to try their limited beers when they come out but the last one I enjoyed was Moo-Hoo and hell Left Hand's Milk Stout is better in my opinion.

I've been twice and have had a burger both times and it's been fantastic. Good service, knowledgable staff, they go fancy on the glassware and stuff etc. They have a solid draft list that changes frequently and a simply unreasonably large bottle list. The only thing is either go at an off-hour or be prepared to wait a while. It gets simply retarded busy.
