The Buell XB and 04 1200r sportster heads are even better than the thunderstorms. I think I'd rather put a 1250 conversion on a standard sportster and make it look alike. Probably be cheaper and would have more hp.

I looked at an XR1200R when I got my Speed Triple. It is -not- a cafe racer riding position, it's slightly less aggressive than the Triumph (which for me was a plus.) It has decent front suspension, mediocre brakes, mediocre rear. It has only the most basic instrumentation, and frankly I'm of the opinion any modern bike needs a fuel gauge and a real-time fuel economy meter (I think Harley will tack one on for like $300 extra.) It didn't have ABS. The matte paint didn't seem up to normal Harley quality. And of course the engine performance was hugely different. All for about the same money. Basically it made me feel like Harleys tend to make me feel - it would have been a neat bike for thousands of dollars less, and it really made me wish they still sold Buells.

Yeah a mileage readout seems extraneous and every fuel gauge I've seen is not accurate enough to rely on any moreso than a 1gal reserve and mental arithmetic. I'm not saying I reject all bikes with those items, I just think they're luxuries. On a modern bike, give me a speedometer with 2 trip odometers, a reserve light, and maybe a tach.

A fuel gauge may not be a precision instrument but you're not talking any more about needing an extra physical gauge, it's like a thermometer in the tank and some extra segments on the LCD display. And once you get lazy / used to using one it's hard to go without. If I was looking at a classic machine it'd be one thing but once you're talking ABS and traction control, gently caress, tell me how much gas I have.

Got an 2009 street bob. Battery died a few months ago and I just replaced it with a new one today. Tried to start my bike and it was trying to start up, but backfired a few times and then nothing. Anyone got a clue why it won't start?

Checked the fuses and it all looked good. And it might be bad fuel? Maybe? Just had all new fluids and gas put in my bike my bike in May so I'm pretty sure it's not the fluids/fuel. I'll drain it out and see if it runs on new fuel. If not I'll blame it on the Harley factor and take it in.

So it turned over a few times / backfired / then was totally dead? Any new battery should be able to turn a motor for a pretty long time before dying.

I don't think backfiring is all that dangerous in general. Just don't go loving w/ the throttle as you start it. Just hold the starter down for a bit and see if it starts.

So my buddy bought a brand new street bob, less than 1000 miles on it and its in the shop, leaking oil. They told him either a head gasket seal or a cracked cylinder wall. How common is it for these bikes to end up in the ship quickly?

That's masterfully executed in the details, but the overall proportions are all wrong. The seat and rear wheel in particular are really goddamn ugly. Reminds me of this...thing: I guess it just goes to show how different the seating position is between a laid-back cruiser and a cafe racer. If you want to use clip-ons, you've got to move the seat so far forwards that the whole rear end looks bizarre.

Probably a bit, seeing as a Mikuni VM38 can be had for about $75-$90, but I didn't know where I was gonna get the throttle cable and mounting hardware or even what version of the drat VM38 to buy and this is being sold as a bolt-on replacement. I am undecided on the air cleaner. I think I could learn to like it.

I'd say follow the maintenance schedule and you are fine but if you want to check it more often, can't hurt.

Put on the VM38 over the weekend. It fired up no problem, but it was running at 3.5-4k RPM and adjusting the idle speed screw did sweet gently caress-all to help. I figured out that the slide was leaving quite a gap and not coming even close to closed. This raises a question: how much gap do I want in there when the throttle is completely "closed?" If I leave no gap at all (I adjusted the cable at the top and now it will close all the way provided I don't roll off slowly), the bike won't start or run even with the choke on. I have read that with this sort of carb, you're not supposed to give it gas at all when you're starting it and just use the choke. The bike won't kick over unless I'm opening it up a little now that the slide is fully closed, though. Any thoughts? I can't really find any information on how to set up this carb other than "adjust the idle speed screw and air screw. " (and more than half the time, they say the idle screw is on the wrong side of the carb - both the idle and air screws are on the right side) Edit: After some more searching, I found this guy here. He went through all the same stuff I've been going through (and more. I hope this means I'm slightly less retarded) and I think I've got most of my answers now.
