I'm currently doing an online course that involves a lot of reading and note-taking. I find playing some soft music in the background really helps me focus. At the moment I'm listening to Morcheeba and Massive Attack but I've gone through all their albums a dozen times and would like something fresh. Please recommend me trip hop or ambient, preferably instrumental or with minimal vocals. Caveat - no classical, please. Also, DJ Krush was too noisy so nothing in that vein. Thanks!

Any more along the lines of They Shoot Horses Don't They?? Something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psD1ePsb2ls Kind of frenetic, broken-down circus stuff. Not sure how else to describe it. There's an obvious Tom Waits influence happening but it's a little less morose and a little more strung out. Thanks!

So I've got a hankerin' for some Curtis Mayfield, and I'm curious what I should explore. I have Pusher Man, Superfly, and The Joy (Kanye & Jay-Z feat...), and love all three. I also really really love The House that Dirt Built, by The Heavy, which has some distinctively similar vocals. So what should I check out? Should I just jump on iTunes and start buying albums?

Definitely get Curtis, Curtis Live, and Roots. I'd start with Curtis Live, it's one of the best live records ever made, and it's pretty much Curtis in his absolute prime. If you're into Curtis Mayfield, you also might want to check out Baby Huey. He cut one record that was released on Curtom, Mayfield's label, that was put out after he died. He has an amazing voice, and there's a couple of Curtis Mayfield covers on his record. His version of Hard Times is an absolute classic.

Can someone point me to a good comp of more stuff like this? I love the punchy bass especially and the deep sounding production on a lot of it. I don't mind the ballad-oriented side of funk/soul but I think I like the more raucous/aggressive stuff. So I'm trying to put together a playlist of popular rock songs from the early-mid 2000s (broad, I know), but I'm loving horrible at remembering all the singles I loved to hear on Fuse. Some examples of what I'm looking for: The Von Bondies - "C'mon C'mon" Reggie and the Full Effect - "Get Well Soon" Audioslave - "Be Yourself" The Darkness - "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" Modest Mouse - "Float On" Franz Ferdinand - "Take Me Out" Glassjaw - "Cosmopolitan Bloodloss" Thursday - "At This Velocity" Hot Hot Heat - "Goodnight Goodnight" Chevelle - "The Clincher" The Mars Volta - "The Widow" Jimmy Eat World - "Pain" As you can tell I'm not really stuck on any particular genre within rock. Basically, if it was played on Fuse endlessly, I want it. Traitorous Leopard fucked around with this message at 04:08 on Jul 19, 2012 |

This is a pretty vague description but I have no idea where to start for something like this. Basically I'm looking for some sort of cross between piano and something else (preferably electronica of some sort). For example, whenever there is some random piano piece in the middle of a dubstep/rap/rock/whatever song I usually get really enamored of it. Of course it only ends up being like 15 seconds long, say for an intro or something, and I end up really wanting the entire song to be like that. I'm not really a fan of classical nor jazz piano type stuff though? Any recommendations would be appreciated. I can find some examples if need be but it might take a while since I can't think of any off the top of my head.

I'm looking for some more songs that sound like The Flashbulb- Something that had died. It is so beautiful, but not only that, it's a perfect song to listen to when I want to be in a contemplative mood, and think about things. I'm not very conversant with this genre, being more into dnb, jazz, and stuff (although I like bands like this a lot) so I figured I'd ask the experts. Preferably something with minimal vocals, as I find I end up concentrating on those instead, and end up singing not thinking. Samples are fine and in this song, make it perfect. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EH7POpjRmKw I also like Earwicker's stuff and find it also to be very good for contemplative moods. But I'd like to get enough other stuff to fill about 2-4 hours or so of time. I also have some Explosions in the Sky, but only one or two of their songs that I have really have this sort of 'mood'.

I am looking for good really deep 80's music. I would almost say like The Cure's Disintegration but, yaknow, it's a bit emo. Stuff with deep (well constructed) synths, lots of reverb and/or delay on the voices. This is probably the most hipster thing I could ever ask for. They're really not worth listening to unless you like stock standard breakbeats. The gem, however, is Disc 3 'Deeptech' I have listened to this CD so many goddamn times. it is an absolute ripper. Very, very very mellow ambient breakbeats and incredibly deep. Do yourself a favour and check it out. The first album is one of the most relaxing pieces of music you will ever hear, mostly acoustic niceties with ambient pad overtones and occasional percussion, all instrumental. It's really really nice, easy listening music. Their second album Unomia is a bit more electronically orientated, kinda glitchy in places.... but still really nice. I guess what I'm trying to ask for is not the music most would associate with the 80's, not disco, not the pop music, glam rock, or any of that kind of stuff. I mean probably more towards gothic sounding, perhaps industrial. I don't really know how to describe it.
