It was neat meeting my first vallhund though. In my 2 years and change of having a Vallhund, I've met 3 people who knew what she was. First was a show judge from the local kennel club. Second was a kennel club fanatic follower girl. Third was a random guy who just loving knew. I love my weird awesome dog

Like you know how a dog will do a fast sort of nibble on their leg or whatever? Well he's doing that to my chin. I'm not sure what it means. Some dogs just like to nibble. It's not a bad thing unless you'd prefer they didn't. A fellow SCBB member has a three-legged dog, Dolly, who loves to nibble chins and noses if you let her. Speaking of, today I went with her and Dolly to the humane society to educate the summer camp kids on pit bulls/dogs in general. She's also an evaluator for WAGS, so I've been going with her and Dolly on these little trips to see if becoming a therapy dog is something Shadow would enjoy. He'd be fantastic at it, he's very calm and bombproof around strangers and kids, I was just never sure it's something he would like. He gets bored pretty easily. And here is Dolly gettin' belly rubs from today.

He's a mouthy dog who likes to chew on hands and things. We play tug without a toy often too, just him grabbing my fingers lightly and me hooking them around his front teeth and then he pulls. My GSD will sometimes try to remove moles from my body. I don't know if he thinks he's removing ticks or what, but he'll gently try to pick it up. I have to stop him though, because if he gets frustrated that he can't get it he'll bite a little harder and pinch the hell out of me.

Skizzles posted:Some dogs just like to nibble. It's not a bad thing unless you'd prefer they didn't. I know its probably pretty rare, but Dexter has OCD nibbling. It started out as "drive by nibbling" when we were playing or cuddling and went downhill fast. Before medication he would be mid-play and suddenly start nibbling the nearest cloth. It got to the point where he was nibbling all the time, and one time when I picked him up and put him on the floor and started shaking a toy around to try to play with him, he completely ignored me and leapt into a pillow that was on the ground and started nibbling. It was almost like he was desperate to nibble. Calling his name, giving him something else to chew, trying to take him away from the cloth all did nothing. Basically, I know it is not common, but watch out for the nibble habit getting out of control quickly. I was actually going through old videos a few days ago and noticed hints of the behavior from the first few months of having Dex. He's just a broken puppy.

Oh, okay. Well the nibbling is cute, it's just a new thing and of course I gotta worry about every new thing. Got the dog one of those paw-shaped food bowls. The 'toes' have little compartments with a sliding thing over them, and the middle has a bunch of little compartments with a top that goes in a circle. I thought it'd help him slow down eating, and give him some mental stimulation. His face is too flat to get in there and eat the kibble.

It's more a reminder to myself really, I have a habit of putting too much pinfo on here. Sorry if I sounded short or w/e, it's been a tiring few days. The greyhound specific vets are mainly there to serve racing facilities, but they're useful for any sighthound really. There are also 'bonemen', who aren't vets but who are also experienced with 'diagnosing' and 'treating' injuries in greyhounds/lurchers - I'd rather stick with vets though I don't think there are any other specific breed vets, but rural vets will be more acquainted with werkin dawg injuries, and I guess there must be vets who specialise in some of the more screwed up pedigree breeds.

Lmao yeah no. That "boston" was not a Boston; Bostons have looked like stupid ugly rear end Bostons since the day some idiot crossed a bull + terrier with an english bulldog. Even the earliest, lamest crosses were more boston-y than that. Bostons used to *usually* have a little more face and be a little stockier, otherwise they haven't changed much. Lots of cropping rather than naturally erect ears in the older dogs, too. Other than that, nah. Whoever made that video got a bit confused. Edit: Yeah wow, just saw that that was from 1922. That's even more . Bostons were standardized in 1893 and they looked like Bostons. Supercondescending fucked around with this message at 01:58 on Jul 18, 2012 |

Some people still do; you get funky pit bull rose ears sometimes in Bostons. I'm not up on ~current Boston show lady~ trends though so I dunno how common it is now. afaik they should stand naturally and cropping isn't common anymore. I've got a reprint of a vintage Boston book originally published in 1910, I'll scan a few pages in a sec w/ some old dogs.

This little bitch has been vomiting all over my poo poo. Carpet, shoes, books, decorative throws, nothing is safe. I step softly when it is dark for fear of stepping into a mess of her sick. I am a slave to the whims of her sensitive stomach. When her body arches in anticipation of regurgitation, she looks me in the eye with a terrible awareness. She insults me, and she insults my carpet. I must destroy her

Speaking of sick cats, anyone want to chime in on advice for my kitty? I don't feel like making a thread for it. Vet was called this morning -debating on bringing her in this afternoon vs. tomorrow morning if this continues. We just went to the vet 1.5 weeks ago and her blood work gave her a clean bill of health. About 36 hours ago, during the night I assume, Nova had a stomach upset resulting in a puke with a small hairball, and possibly a second one nearby the first. This is the first hairball she's had since I first got her and got her on good food. I've been brushing her nearly everyday in this weather. She also did a slightly big regular # 2, and a liquid poo in the litter box. When I got up in the morning to discover all this, she wasn't trying to wake me up for breakfast and didn't come when the alarm went off. She wasn't interested in eating but I got a few mouthfuls into her by hand feeding and she drank some water. At this point I was thinking, ok something similiar happened about a month ago, only without the bad poo, she probably just had an upset and feels nauseous. She was a bit lethargic, but she's old so it's hard to tell. She didn't clean her backside well and generally just wanted to lay down where ever she was, though would walk around some. I left and came back 2 hours later and offered food again. She had more appetite and ate most of her wet food. While I was away she had another liquid poo. At 1 pm I offered her the morning portion of kibble and she ate all of it. At 4 pm she started crying for dinner, back to her old self. I held off til 5 pm and she ate all of dinner, wet and dry. There were a 1-2 more liquid poos in the evening but she seemed more energetic. Over the night she had 2 bad poos, and did not want to eat this morning though try a few licks on her own. I got some into her by hand feeding, and tried a few times over the course of a half hour to get 2/3 of it in her. She had some water on her own. I waited some time and offered her the kibble, but again she'd eat a few bites and walk away. One of these times she went to the kitchen to ask for food. Eventually she ate 2/3 of it. So that's where we are right now. I'm perplexed why she seemed to recover last night, but I guess she still had the bad poos so she wasn't really better. Vet this afternoon or vet tomorrow morning?

Yesterday a pallet factory burned down about a mile from me. I'm in a small community so everyone rushed over and moved the horses (it was mostly run by Amish) to safety and started a bucket chain until the fire trucks got there. The local paper covered it and instead of posting a picture of people valiantly fighting the fire they posted this picture of a firefighter playing with a kitty. Farm cats are totally unphased by anything.

My kitty is in a mood today. First he kept sneaking up and knocking my coffee mug right as I lifted it up to drink. He tried it several times until he finally got me at the right moment and spilled coffee all over my shirt. Then he started chasing George around because George is afraid of cats (well not really, but he knows he's not supposed to hurt them but also doesn't really know how to interact with them so just lets them bully him around). Now he is laying on top of Bandit and Bandit looks rather unhappy with this state of affairs but is also on the super comfy dog bed so doesn't want to get up and lose his spot.
