Awesome beer, no pants.

Haha Sirotan, that sounds like the BEST tasting hahaha. I am so bummed it didn't work out for me, in the end, to make it to yours, sounds like it was a blast.

In tasting news, I continue to really like the nanobrewery Pipeworks in Chicago. The only one I haven't liked was their smoked porter (but I really just don't like smoked beers) and while some of there stuff isn't The Greatest Beer (tm) its all so solid that I can't stop buying them.
The latest I had was their saison with peppercorns. Honestly I didn't taste anything super out of the ordinary for a saison so I am not sure if the peppercorns just helped that base flavor out or what. No Tank7 but I'd get it again.

Also on the last leg of the vacation my Dad and I went to Greenbush brewery somewhere in Michigan. I thought it was pretty good. Nothing jumped out at us except maybe the Wit with Blood Oranges, but for a 1 year old place it was quite solid.

People/Ounzes:

There are 10 people coming, which means we’ll each get about 2 oz. of each beer. However, you’ll get to try a good # of beers (638 ounzes total at an average of 10.6% ABV).

Nooooo now I'll only get 63.8 ounzes of beer. :saddowns:

Wow, that's managed to top one tasting I'd been invited to back in Dallas and needless to say, I've declined every single time. This group makes you pay $25 if you show up with a beer that the group hasn't tried before. Now keep in mind that this is a group that regularly pops bottles like LA Veritas, Cantillon Fou Foune, Beatification Batch 1-3; basically they have no issues hunting down whales and demand satisfaction if you aren't up to the same caliber of sourcing beer/trading as they are. And the pictures I've seen make it look like a super stressful meeting, complete with tasting notes and charts and poo poo.

Show up with $25 and a sixer of this. I guarantee it meets their lovely criteria of not having tried before.

On a positive note though, another DC local (beer guy at Rick's in Alexandria) had a tasting with a ton of Lost Abbey whales. Then this happened. I'd forgotten to post this until Lost Abbey put up some videos recently.

seekabrew.com

if you don't get Dominion up your way, Gigi's Farmhouse is a great budget saison, and Evolution makes a few halfway-decent beers. looks like they get Williamsburg Alewerks, too, but i don't know what they'd have that's worth seeking out.

Mistyped it; if you fail to show up with a beer that the group hasn't tried before. Basically amounts to either bring a whale, otherwise pay up.

I got back from Florida from my honeymoon and had a couple interesting/good beers down there. Descriptions are short since I had all these with dinner. I had a Cigar City Jai Alai IPA which was a very solid, dryer IPA. I tried Yuengling for the first time and can't really describe it as anything more than average. I thought it tasted a lot like the Budweiser that's brewed in Europe, Czech Republic I think (definitely superior to the American Budweiser). Germany was awesome for beer btw. I had a blueberry beer which tasted like poo poo, and a summer ale brewed in Maine which tasted like a watered down Summer Shandy (sorry I don't remember exactly which two these were and I can't find my receipts to check).

I think my favorite beer I sampled was a Kona Coco Brown Coconut Ale. I was initially hesitant to try it because it sounded pretty nasty, but they gave me a sample and it was drat good. Had a strong coconut smell but the coconut flavor wasn't overwhelming. Definitely a sweet beer, with some taste of brown sugar and molasses and a clean, creamy texture finish. I wish they distributed this stuff up in Chicago, unfortunately the closest I found after a bit of looking is Tennessee.

People really keep a close eye on label approvals, so it's no surprise that after Trader Joe's has set foot in Texas, they're also now one step closer to getting Firestone Walker. So far, they confirmed the Mission Street stuff, but hey, that's still progress in my eyes.

I would hope that this talk of horrible people holding beer tastings isn't scaring people off from going to their own local ones, because the main BA-forum-organized one in Houston is incredibly chill and allows you to try all kinds of things that you'd never have a chance at otherwise. The only reason I login to the BA forums is to find out when the next meeting is.

I don't understand the point of holding a tasting if fun isn't allowed at the tasting.

Matilda is their Belgian IPA and it was supposedly inspired by Orval, so you know it's got that bretty soul way down inside. I don't think it tastes much like an Orval though; it's much fruitier and more accessible.

Other than that, what are the other bombers you have to choose from? Pere Jacque? An abbey ale, very porty. Pepe Nero? A dark, earthy farmhouse brewed with black peppercorns. Sofie is a farmhouse as well and is brewed with white pepper. Much lighter and fruitier, creamy almost. Then there's the sours and sour analogues. Lolita is similar to a framboise, Madame Rose is like a Kriek and Juliet is like a... different kind of framboise, I guess? It's actually been a while since I had their sours, so I dunno if I'm doing them justice.

Matilda is not a Belgian IPA and neither is Orval. Matilda is directly inspired by Orval, though GI's version is a bit maltier.
Both are a hoppy (in the Belgian sense, which would be considered barely hoppy by American standards) Belgian Pale Ale's with a big Brett funkiness.

Ale Asylem does Hopalicious which is second to Spotted Cow as beers that are a must-tap at Madison bars. They also do Bedlam!, which is a Belgium IPA, possibly my favorite brew. In fact, I need to go get another couple packs before they stop releasing it for the year.
