Sleigh Bells live was, as reviews have suggested, kind of an exercise in totally covering up a tiny, thin voice with massive guitars, or, a near perfect set list was hampered by a barrage of noises as loud as god. ... That said, not to perv out here, but Ms. Kraus has extremely firm thighs.

I didn't see the new "The XX" song posted, so here you go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_nW5AF0m9Zw I am a little mixed on this song. The song is fairly comparable to some of the stuff on their first album, but it just feels as if the song doesn't have the hook that, say VCR, has. But, there is still something appealing about it. You can tell I am not a music critic.

Is this the right thread to talk about fang island in? they're a bit heavy to be called indie, but it's all pop hooks. I just got back from their show at the bowery and they're loving astounding live. Go see them! Major just came out, and although I dont know it what I heard was incredible. Also listen to their first album, it's self titled.

I really think The Menzingers might've released my AOTY. Every time I listen to it, it gets better. I don't know how I can express enough love for it in one forum post, but most of you seem to know how awesome it is anyway. I don't know whether it's fair to compare them, but Handwritten really doesn't stand a chance at the moment! I'm so gutted that their London date on their Euro tour stops here the same night as Nasum's farewell show, as I really can't miss that. I might have to travel to the next nearest date, or visit a friend up north who is also a fan to go see them.

callmehyde posted:Just got On the Impossible Past the other day and I've listened to the entire album every day since. Besides The Gaslight Anthem, do you have any recommendations that might be in the same ballpark? Sadly enough, this is all I listen to basically. I kinda talked about them in my Springsteen thread, since they're all influenced by him: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3472716 You can also try the punk thread. I'd start with The Hold Steady (bit more literate), Titus Andronicus (bit punkier), and The Smith Street Band (bit more Australian). Frank Turner's another good bet; he's a bit more of a folk singer but he draws from the same well as The Menzingers. The Mountain Goats aren't punk but they are just as literary. Hot Water Music, Descendents, and Bad Religion are probably the forefathers of what The Menzingers do. The Mountain Goats have some of the same lyrical themes, but are a bit more low-fi. Getting farther afield there's fellow Philly band The Loved Ones; their lead singer Dave Hause also has a few solo albums. Blacklist Royals are another Jersey band that sound just like Gaslight. Sharks are touring with Menzingers and sound a bit like them too. I'll add more as I find them.

I'll second Frank Turner (obviously) and The Smith Street Band. Both are absolutely ace. Also, I'll throw Jim Lockey and the Solemn Sun in as a recommendation because he completes my triumvirate of folk/punk/thing bands.

A few days ago Ben Gibbard released a new song on his Soundcloud page. It's about former Seattle Mariner/current New York Yankee Ichiro Suzuki. As someone who never really listened to Death Cab, but is a big fan of the Postal Service, I'd say this is the best baseball song since Take Me Out To The Ballgame. Somehow I doubt it's going to make his solo album. http://soundcloud.com/gibbstack/ichiros-theme

OK so maybe my comment about Handwritten not standing a chance was a bit short sighted. SInce it went up on Spotify on Monday, I've listened to it every day this week, and made the vinyl purchase after work today The vinyl itself is beautifully presented, if you're wondering, but I'll probably bore people with the details of that in the vinyl thread instead. The music itself gets better every time. I really love the 1st half of the album now, and there is still a lot for me to get into on the 2nd half. 45, Mulholland Drive and Keepsake are the standouts for me so far, although National Anthem is also really good. It's kind of like a slightly more muted accompaniment to OTIP, and means that I am now listening to something other than The Menzingers. This will most likely feature somewhere in my top 20 of the year, possibly even my top 10. I'll live with it a little longer before I make that sort of call though. E: I didn't see any posts for it, but I may have missed them... Either way, A new Mountain Goats track is available for streaming RIGHT FRIGGING NOW and it is, as predicted, wonderful. On a sidenote, I need that artwork on an LP sleeve, in my hands, right now. nomapple fucked around with this message at 00:34 on Jul 28, 2012 |

I just found out about the singer/songwriter Jeff Hanson that was signed to KRS in 2003. I am absolutely blown away. This guy wrote some really beautiful songs. Then I found out he passed away back in 2009. I am really shocked at how underrated he is. He deserves much more attention. I hate it so much when I find an artist that I really like just to find out they have passed on.
