5.9? Barring clearances and hiring, the outlook appears favorable. Haven't heard of any hiring snags yet, but there was a recent GAO report which said State lacks middle management. (which is somewhat true). So they might make it a point to keep consistent hiring numbers. Which cone were you again?

OMS. There were only three of us there and I was the only one who passed. I just finished my FSO PNQs 2 days ago, they were due yesterday so we'll see what happens there. The librarian position closes on the 20th so I'm really hoping that one pans out. But heck, I'll take whatever route I can. The interviewer told me after they gave me the good news that if the IRO thing doesn't work out, give it a year as an OMS and then they have a program to help try to move into other areas or something and after tenure I could do the Mustang program if I wanted to go that route...I was still in OMG I PASSED mode so I don't remember her exact words.

OA for IMS is in a week and change. Still hacking away at my SF-86, even though my responses from my previous one carried over, it's been a heck of a time. Biggest has been straightening out a bunch of foreign travel and explaining work/living situation while contracting in a warzone. And finding people to put down for vouching. I know it's going to be hot and humid in DC but I hope it won't be.

Someone posted on the yahoo boards recently they got a september invite about 2 days ago, as they were 'no. 3' on the register with a 5.97.. i forget which specific register it was, but I think it was OMS. For IMS, as of the July class (i.e. today), there were only 25 IMS left on the register. There is a July OA soon, and September invites are going out as I type, so that number isn't static. So for potential IMS candidates, I would say shoot for a 5.8 as your minimum if you want to feel confident about an invite. edit yeah: it's hot and humid. Expect 90's or 100's with at least 50% humidity. For your OA, sadly you've gotta wear a suit. (Get it tailored if it isn't)

Just to show how widely the registers can vary, apparently PD right now has a 5.4 at #16. But the registers are much shorter now than they were in 2010 when nearly every register was at or over 150 people. Back in 2010, I was in the high 50's (out of over 200 at one point) in POL with a 5.67 (though I eventually got down to the low 30's I think before I got my offer).

If not, EL is better, since at least you have a proportional chance of getting something good when you're directed. I only bid EL coming out of A-100; everything else was mid-level. Waaaay better than being directed by CDOs whose job it is to fill holes with bodies. . . .

I get the impression that it sucks more doing the research and grunt work, but is way better in terms of what you can pull if you do it right.

So I'm in the middle of my Peace Corps service and about to finish training. I asked the charge d'affaires when she spoke to us if they offer the FSOT at the embassy and she said they did once a year. Great! But it will be a bit hard to study for it from the middle of the African savannah. Did anyone take the FSOT (and pass it?) during Peace Corps service here? I'm interested in what you think. I'll certainly try it both years I'm here in West Africa, but if there are any tips, I'd love to hear.
