Does anyone have a recommendation for rapidly swapping the bluetooth-only Magic Trackpad between machines? When I swap laptops on my desk setup everything is incredibly easy with the single thunderbolt cable running to my Thunderbolt Display. The Display acts as a hub for everything. The Trackpad is the one thing that sucks.

Is there software out there to deal with this problem? Is there a bluetooth USB dongle that I can pair the devices with so they stick to the dongle instead of the laptop? I have 2 or 3 dedicated machines and need to swap them out about 4 times per day. I've mostly given up on even using the trackpad because of it.

Can you just turn off bluetooth for the devices you no longer need the trackpad for?

Can Macbook Pro's boot off the SD drive?

Since I found out that my iPad does 99% of what I use my laptop for, I am in the process of replacing my 15" MacBook Pro with one of the shiny new Sandy Bridge Mac Minis.

I will likely be buying a $579 refurb model, and then using the iFixit kit to convert it to a SSD for OSX and a HDD for storage. So, two questions...

1) What size SSD should I get for a boot drive? It only has to contain OSX + iLife +iWork, and maybe a little elbow room for the future. I don't use Logic Pro or Aperture or any huge suites, so i'm thinking... 128gb?

2) For the storage drive, should I go with 5,400rpm or 7,200rpm? I am guessing the slower one will run cooler and quieter, but will it be fast enough to play HD movies and stuff without stuttering?

Thanks in advance.

I don't see why not, but I haven't actually tried. I'll grab a blank SD card tonight and have a look.

Yes, but I'm sure it's painfully slow. Although, I've booted Snow Leopard off an Intel SSD connected with USB 2.0 and it wasn't really that bad.

In the past I'd say get a 60/64GB drive, but a 120/128GB really isn't much more. They used to be $200, but now they are $70-$100 on sale. A 64GB drive is going to only be $60-$90, so just get the bigger one.

Modern 5,400 RPM laptop drives will still run at the very least 60MB/s if not 100MB/s for a 1 TB model

There really isn't much that you can't boot a mac/OS X off of. Keep in mind, though, that 2010 and prior MBPs had the SD reader on a USB bus with all the limitations that entails. The 2011 and later models moved it to the PCI bus IIRC.

You could always just switch the disks around.

Anyways the reason I ask is I don't have windows 7 as dual boot and I'm thinking of buying a 64gb sd card and using it as a windows 7 dual boot since I don't have space to do that on my tiny 320gb hard drive ( Have like 200gbs of porn). So I though the sd would be a good option.

I'm also thinking of doing a optibay, but I really want a hybrid laptop hard drive to come out to make it easer for me to choose.

If the trackpad is paired with both Macs, you can click the Bluetooth menu extra, then choose the trackpad, then "Connect" to switch it. Doesn't work so well if one of the Macs has no other input devices though.

I can't recall if i'd ever posted complaining about this in the past : but I was wondering if anyone else had a similar experience :

Late 2008 MBP here : I had pulled the DVD drive , put a 500GB drive in its place, and a SSD in the main drive slot by the batter. My SSD has both Lion and BootCamp partitions.

Now here's where it gets weird.

I can't boot to the bootcamp partition if there's no device connected to the DVD/Optibay connector. Normally it didn't really bother me, but now for whatever reason, my machine is no longer recognizing that anything's connected to the DVD/Optibay connector. Neither the original DVD drive nor the HDD "conversion kit" work. So : no boot camp.

Has anyone heard of / experienced this before?

Just replaced my late 2007 model MBP with a shiny new 13" Air and I love it already.

I'm going to install Windows 7 using Boot Camp in the near future in order to play whatever games the machine can run and possibly do some work-related stuff that requires Windows-based software. I have the 512GB SSD and I'd appreciate any ideas as to how much space I should reserve for Windows. Does 128GB sound reasonable at all for the Windows 7 partition or should I go higher than that?

Also, can anyone think of a valid reason for me to pay €50 more for Win7 Pro instead of going with Home Premium?

Me crush ass to dust

128 gigs is plenty for Windows, a few programs, and 4-5 games. Keep it min though that some games nowadays are bloated. Max Payne 3 is like 30gigs so you might need to keep less games installed. In the case of Win7 Pro it's one of those things where if you don't already know you need it then you don't need it.

Go with Pro if you need to join a domain at work. Otherwise there is not a lot of difference between them. You can upgrade from Home to Pro or Ultimate with Anytime Upgrade if you find you need the extra features later on.

As for drive space, it depends entirely on the requirements of your software. 30GB is sufficient for a base installation of Windows 7 plus Office 2010. 128GB is actually quite a lot unless you intend to install games and that sort of thing. Edit: I missed where you said you are using it for games. Yes, 128GB is reasonable.

Thanks! The integrated graphics will probably limit my gaming options to Fallout 3/New Vegas, Civ 5 and so on. Newer titles—bloated or not—are pretty much out of the question in the first place and, consequently, not really a concern in my case. 128GB it is.

Most of the work-related requirements I mentioned actually stem from web applications that need browser extensions designed only for IE (I know ) so that's pretty basic stuff. Domain connectivity is a good point, though. I'll have to talk about that with IT tomorrow.

"Fulfillment by Amazon" is my favorite new thing; thank you to whoever gave me the heads-up. If you have Apple stuff to re-sell I think that's the fastest way for the maximum return. The moment my like-new "inventory" gets to them, someone buys it within an hour via Prime.

Man, I'm approaching a HiDPI pickle. I'm now designing both standard and retina mobile stuff, and doing some responsive web design to look sharp in a variety of densities, but I don't have a HiDPI desktop display (unless I set my iMac to 720p HiDPI and roll my chair back 5 feet). I have all the guts to trick out my '09 iMac, but I'm wondering if the AMD Radeon HD 6970M will ever power an external HiDPI Cinema Display when they roll out. Likely not if it's all ThunderBolt? Maybe a 3rd party display via DisplayPort (wouldn't it be a B if you bought a Mac Pro just before the Tbolt update and could never use a retina Cinema Display). The WP entry for DP mentions 3840x2160, so if they have a 21" retina display it could work out. So I'm wondering if I should just return sell these parts and wait around for a retina iMac, using my devices (mainly iPad) as preview in the meantime.

Marco linked an article talking about how web designers are going to have to keep an auxiliary 1x resolution display around for a long time to come, which I found interesting to think about.

I've sold maybe 25 items via Marketplace between notebooks, devices and parts, and they always sell immediately (aside from unpopular RAM). About half the time to military / universities. I've only incurred problems twice- just before iPad 3rd gen came out I had people return an iPad 2 _twice_ for no reason and that was such a headache. "A to Z" return policy. Sending my stuff to Amazon and letting them handle any returns is totally worth it. I don't ever plan to offer product support as I'm just unloading my gently-used gear.

I remember I tried to sell my PSP on ebay in like 2007 and all I got were those scammers. I eventually gave up.
