USAA is awesome sauce because they offer just about everything. They might not have ~the best rates for everything ever~ but they're likely extremely competitive, like top 3. And their customer service for anything is so outrageously good every other company should be shamed on a regular basis.

When you have great credit, USAA is really nice to have. FUUCCKKKK shady federal.

I'm going to jump on the USAA bandwagon. While I don't (yet) have any credit cards or loans through them, their banking and insurance is awesome. My apartment was broken into last year while I was on active duty and they were more than fair in paying out and very friendly although their website can be a bit of a pain in terms of submitting claims.

Any time I've ever dealt with USAA customer service they've always exceptional. At first I thought it would be a pain in the rear end not having an actual bank branch to go to, but it's never been a problem.

I use my USAA Amex almost exclusively (I pay it off every month or two). Rewards points. If I'm somewhere that doesn't accept it (rare) I'll use Discover or my USAA debit MC. The only bad thing about not having a local branch is if you need a bank check or something asap. They'll overnight it, but sometimes even that's not fast enough.

Not depositing a check, getting a bank check (like a cashier's check). But yes, the mobile or deposit@home thing works instantly. I haven't had a problem since it first came out when it didn't like Firefox, but that's long in the past.

On the topic of USAA, is there a way of setting up auto-pay for things usually paid by checks? I pay my rent by check every month, and somebody mentioned to me that there was a way to set this up.

Yeah man dig around under "make a payment" or something I think off the top of my head. It's pretty sweet. Should be on the sidebar while in your checking account screen, or on the main account screen there should be a drop down bar with it as an option I believe.

The simplest way would be to get the account information of whoever you pay your rent to and then set up an automatic transfer from your checking or whatever to that account every month (my monthly IRA contribution is set up this way.) I think there's another way through their "Bill pay" section, but I'm pretty sure that this one requires account information of the account you are depositing in as well.

Navy Federal took 1000 dollars or some poo poo out of my savings without telling me, I had to call them up to even find out who and why. California somehow ordered them to take money from my account for income tax I didn't owe(never a resident). Took me a week to get it back, glad I wasn't broke at the time. But military people and finances are a loving nightmare and I'm sure a lot of NFCU horror stories are dealing with retarded junior enlisted people and their spouses who are loving idiots and cry foul at actually having to pay off loans and poo poo

No, you can have checks mailed out from your account automatically as well. I use this for rent and a bill that only takes checks.

So here's something a bit more specific. Am looking for some info. I'm leaving AIT soon, and and my orders are for Yongsan in South Korea. I'm just looking for a bit of what to expect details forYongsan or overseas stations in general. I only did about 10 minutes of google-fu before coming here so sorry if it's a pretty obvious question. Mostly I'm not to find out what kind of post Yongsan is, and what I can expect from it. My MOS is 68W (health care specialist aka combat medic)

Oxford Comma posted:Navy people: how often does someone fall overboard and how much poo poo are they in when that happens? We had one man overboard on a carrier of 5,000 or so people in 6 months of deployment. He fell off while trying to hop to another jet in the middle of the night, as far as I know if you're lucky enough to survive/be found you won't be in any trouble. He was rescued by helicopter bros way before they ever got the loving RHIB in the water, thought that was pretty funny.

I was stoked to see Yongsan on my orders only to get shipped down to Humphreys. As long as you avoid Area 1, you really won't have a bad time in Korea. The remote bases are mostly shutdown and "major" cities have sprouted up outside the remaining bases. I'm in Yongsan as a fat contractor so hit me up when you get here.

I know that maritime vessels have to perform these figure 8 drills every so often. I have no idea if they actually do this or not during a real life rescue, but I'm sure one of the Coasties would be able to tell you.

It all depends on sea conditions, how long ago the man fell overboard and if it is day or night. If we dont find the man we start doing an expanding square search begining at the last known position of the man. In the best case scenario we lunch the small boat and recover the man. Sectors have software that can simulate the location of a man overboard and vessel adrift based om weather, currents and so on. Edit: If conditions permit, we do the actual turn.

I skimmed through the 5 pages of the forum, but couldn't find the military ward thread started by christoff (I think...). Anyways, TRICARE QUESTION: My wife and I were sick as hell and ended up going to an Urgent Care on a Saturday. We did that because we figured it would be less busy than the ER. I'm AD, she's my dependent. So yesterday we get a letter from Tricare addressed to her with a check for about 60 bucks, saying that is the amount Tricare is covering, but since it was out of the network, they are sending us the check so we can pay the facility. Upon reading the letter further, it had a breakdown of the costs and it said that the total bill was about $400. It had 0 for copayment and deductible. We haven't received a bill from the company yet, and the facility said they normally take about a month to send the bills out (we went in late June). I'm going to call the facility up tomorrow to check, but here's the two questions: 1) How likely is it I'm going to be on the hook for a $340 bill for urgent care ($400 visit less the $60 check Tricare sent us)? 2) From reading on some other forums, it seems like the policy for most military is to try and go to your on base ER first, and if not, then you need a referral from your PCM. I'm Coast Guard, and I've brought my wife to the ER before as a dependent and never gotten billed, but this was the first time going to Urgent Care with her. I've gone to an Urgent care before and never been charged. The nearest base's medical facilities aren't open on Sundays (at least not for Coast Guard...we have a small section of the office split up for us with a PA, a doctor, and an HS3), and my wife' PCM isn't open on Saturdays. If we are on the hook for this, would it be worth a call to Tricare saying I couldn't get a referral because we went on a Saturday? nwin fucked around with this message at 20:16 on Jul 29, 2012 |

Definitely call tricare. You can often get a referral after the fact when it's an urgent-care or ER trip.

If tricare doesn't help you go to your local clinic patient advocate and they are pretty knowledgeable in what you can/ can't do.

Hey all, I'm writing a novel, and my main character is ex-Army. I have a couple of background questions that I'd like to ask. I'm having him have a history as an enlisted man eventually discharged for disability after taking shrapnel to the head. I haven't firmly decided on his job specialization, but am deciding between making him a combat engineer or a straight-up infantryman. 1. What is the highest rank he would believably have reached after five years in the Army if he was a hard-charging exceptionally talented typical thriller-hero guy? 2. What is the minimum believable level of damage for him to get a medical discharge with? It seems like higher and higher levels of disability are kept in the military; the discharge would have occurred in 2007. 3. What is the percentage of time he would typically spend in-theater (Afghanistan) during those five years? Thanks kindly for any info.
