It could be that you're getting some phenolic character in there, which is something I've heard a few people (including coworkers) cite as something they're getting out of it. Different phenols come across as smoke, clove or medicinal flavors. Where did you get it, out of curiosity? I didn't know whether or not the new kegs were on the market yet, but I guess they are. If it's a bottle, that's a very old (~5 years) batch and probably tastes more like a barleywine by now. Well, the guessing game is fairly stupid, but I've always thought a blind tasting would be fun. Too bad the blind tasting aspect in this case is to serve as an opportunity for dick waving instead of dispelling expectations.

I would recommend their Charles River Porter, which is my favorite, and (if they are making it, ironically enough), their pumpkin ale. They also put out a barleywine that is solid. But, if you're hitting Cambridge Brewing, you're in Cambridge, not downtown. As for shops, right over the Longfellow Bridge, on Charles St, is the aptly named Charles St Liquors. They have a good selection. If you actually end up downtown, hit Boston Wine Exchange on Devonshire. BWE has the best selection of the stores in beantown that I have been to. By far.

My favorite 'tasting' I've ever done was myself and a few friends at the Bells brewery, trying to determine which of their beers worked best as a 50/50 blend with black note. Sort of surprisingly, it was Oracle, a beer I'm not super crazy about most of the time. Best black and tan ever. Close second was the smoked stout/black note mixture "black bacon". Also, currently sipping some brewery fresh centennial IPA and marathoning batman movies with friends. Life's good.

most of the beer nerds i roll with are way liberal and work in either restaurants, bottle shops, or for distributors, and only about half of them have facial hair. hmmm... opened a Positive Contact earlier, it pretty much tastes like a beer mixed with apple cider. not bad, but not really interesting, either, and my cider-loving girlfriend even thought it was too sweet. Wells Banana Bread beer is loving horrendous.
