Banks is probably better for travel just because his books are longer. Of those two I probably prefer Matter, Surface Detail had the flaw of focusing way too much on the less interesting part of the story.

the culture books all provide context for each other, but so far the best two, by far, are Use of Weapons and Excession. Excession is so good it beggars the rest of his work.

against a dark background is sci fi and probably not a culture book (you can't tell and it doesn't matter for various spoilery reasons) but it's good

within a couple weeks the following games came out:

Sins of a Solar Empire:Rebellion
Endless Space
Legends of Pegasus

How the hell am I supposed to play all these

Besides, Endless Space was cool except the combat really sucked (loving cards? get the gently caress outta here) and the tech tree was boring and confusing

So I guess thats out but still

How the hell does nothing get close to MoO2 yet

(also, MoM still really owns but that's got no place in the sci fi thread)

Yeah it's super good. But I don't know if you could get into it now. Resolution is fixed to 640x480 for one thing.

I like the mieville that I've read (the new crobuzon books) and for the most part I like banks' culture novels but some of them not as much as others
