Dude, ix-nay on the oice-vay.
The new Conan: the Barbarian is on instant. It's hilariously terrible and violent. I'm hoping they make more of them as scifi originals. It was really fun to make fun of. There's maternity armor and Ron Perlman plays Conan's dad.

I saw it in theaters. There was a 12 year old kid sitting behind me. During the sex scene between Conan and the girl the kid leans over to his dad and says, "This movie is AWESOME."

It's one of my favorite trash movies. It has basically nothing good about it, but it's not so bad your brain zones out, so you can enjoy the stupid.

The only part that was really getting to me and I started to check my watch was around the sandpeople fight. That part dragged a bit.

The rest is a solid gold turd however.

Was that the fight that adolescent Conan had? I know at some point my husband and I were talking about the sandpeople and expecting Ben to totter out making strange sounds to scare them off. But I've been thinking of the people from the adolescent Conan fight as NPC's. Now I've got to go rewatch it.
Also, I think Rose McGowen was worse in the movie than the child actress playing the younger her. I can't tell if she meant to do that or not. `

I thought the beginning, before the actual plot started, was pretty decent and fairly true to Robert E. Howard's original conception. The rest was pretty much poo poo, though.

Holy rollers: The true story of Christian card counters is a really interesting movie. It's about a blackjack team who counts cards at casinos and they are made up of all Christians which totally goes against their beliefs and they try to justify it. Coming from a strong religious home and not being apart of that now it was really fascinating watching these people speak about this.

Tangentially related to this idea, instant streaming currently features the entire output of an actor named Marjoe Gortner (Starcrash, Food of the Gods, and Bobbie Jo and the Outlaw). Marjoe started life as the world's youngest evangelical preacher, and his first movie role was as the star of a documentary (not on netflix, but free on google video) about the scams he ran as a traveling preacher. The most interesting parts of the film are the ones where he's talking to other preachers and they talk about the scams they run to get money. The language they use is totally religious (getting a good haul of cash is called something like "a gift for serving the lord") and they don't seem to realize that they scammed a bunch of people out of money--even though they use that money to live on and don't donate it to a charity to something.

Marjoe seems to be the only one who realizes what he's doing, and he's so disgusted with himself about it that he has the crew record all his tricks so that he can't go back to them if he gets desperate for cash later. he's a fascinating dude, and it's cool to see how he turned out in '70s sleaze like Starcrash.

The documentary's here if you're interested:

Watched Dragonslayer a while ago and it has the honor of being one of the most misleading titles for a film ever. It's a documentary about Josh 'skreech' Sandoval as he skateboards while barely avoiding becoming a bum. It's barely a documentary but I enjoyed it cause it killed an hour and a half.

I also finally got around to watching Chocolate and while the first half is forgettable, the last fight really makes the movie.

I'll recommend Philadelphia Experiment II
some dude was in an experiment in radar invisibility in 1943. Everything went wrong and people melted into metal and somesuch, but because this dude has some special DNA (!) he survives and is sent forward into 1993. Then some bad dudes repeat the experiment and he's sent "sideways" into alternate 1993 where the Nazis won WW2. In sideways 1993 there's another bad dude who wants our hero to copy his DNA and travel in time himself.

It's so bad it's good.

My favorite part of this movie is that, for a while, the word "experiment" in the title was written much smaller than anything else so the thumbnail looked like it was for "Philadelphia II."

I'm pretty sure Ang Lee's NC-17 version of Lust, Caution is still streaming.

quote:

Lust, Caution is an 2007 espionage thriller film directed by Ang Lee, based on the novella of the same name published in 1979 by Chinese author Eileen Chang. The story is mostly set in Hong Kong in 1938 and in Shanghai in 1942, when it was occupied by the Imperial Japanese Army and ruled by the puppet government led by Wang Jingwei. It depicts a group of Chinese university students from the Lingnan University who plot to assassinate a high-ranking special agent and recruiter of the puppet government using an attractive young woman to lure him into a trap.

With this film, Lee won for the second time the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival, the first being with Brokeback Mountain.[2] The film adaptation and the story are loosely based on events that took place during the Japanese occupation of Shanghai. The film's explicit sex scenes resulted in the film being rated NC-17 in the United States.

I really liked it a lot, I'm a pretty big fan of most of his films though.
