Zombies' Downfall posted:I'm pretty sure you can see your characters' own damage multipliers (or number of hits or whatever) in the status screen somewhere, at least in the SNES/SFAM version. I definitely remember that number existing, and Cecil's being the highest. Oh yeah you can, but they're kind of meaningless without any way to learn the enemies' numbers. I have no idea if this is how the DS version works too.

What a lot of people who are dubious (healthy attitude to have) about the fan vitriol for 7's extended universe may miss isn't that it's dumb to have Cloud react from the fall out of all the poo poo in the game after he finally has time to chill and think about it. Hell that's the plot of X-2, and everyone agrees it was an odd direction for Yuna to go in, so the game goes out of its way to sell you the idea. Cloud's reaction doesn't really feel genuine based on what we learn about him, so we have characters essentially telling the audience it's completely normal in an effort to convince it's true. When a new installment has a complete disconnect like that in a character where the transition in personality happens "off screen" it feels like lazy writing. Azure_Horizon posted:It certainly makes the poo poo plot a bit more interesting. Are there "positive"-associated fan theories? I've noticed that every popular FF theory seems less about some neat idea that is fun to think about and more a need to explain away something not adequately explained that ended up specifically *annoying* the audience or to do some kind of damage control in making the character more interesting. The Squall one makes Squall more interesting to people who may not otherwise like him, R=U adds a bittersweet tone to the lame as hell romance and gives depth to a flat character, the "Vanille and Fang Are A Thing" thing incidentally provides a huge amount of damage control for Vanille being grudgingly accepted by a fanbase who didn't like her design and ~moe~ character but really liked Fang's, etc. keet fucked around with this message at 07:49 on Aug 1, 2012 |

What about "everybody died at the end of FF VII"? I've heard people other than me argue that point. Squall and R=U were internet theories that required some serious stretches, whereas FF VII foreshadowed that point somewhat heavily.

FF7 was deliberate though and that feels more like "intepretation of the media" than a fan theory. I think fan theories feel more nebulous because they either gently caress with the stated mechanics of the game a bit (the ff8 ones) and often get completely shut down by the creator at some point. Or they're just a tangently thing (i.e., the fan interpretation that Fang and Vanille are going down under with each other vs being dudebros is not really relevant to the larger narrative and adds some novelty, so people don't really argue against it much) keet fucked around with this message at 08:14 on Aug 1, 2012 |

The Vanille and Fang thing is subtly implied in the game with their sort-of-more-than-just-siblings touching and quite a few lines of dialogue with each other, not to mention the ending of XIII. It's not really a fan theory, and it's surprisingly progressive for a jRPG.

Can't forget, Gogo = [Gestahl/Daryl/Leo/Baram/whoeverthefuck] A character that exists purely for the sake of screwing around with combat mechanics, zero actual characterization. There's also the one about Gilgamesh being the exact same character in each game he shows up in, but I wouldn't be surprised if this has been confirmed as fact.

The entire "mystery" of Gogo rose up simply because FFV didn't come out in the US until years later. He appears in FFV as a bonus boss, and vanishes into the rift after you "beat" him. He's basically a minor nod to the last game. Dissidia had this to say: "The weapon collecting, dimension hopping, self-proclaimed "legendary swordsman." Although possessing the body of a fiend, he holds a strong sense of loyalty and compassion." I think his FF XII appearance was the best yet.

Yeah it's basically the same thing as Balthier and Fran's relationship in XII, except Balthier's a total bro so you occasionally get the "I knew Fran didn't like being tied up, but this is ridiculous!!!" lines. Watching people try to rationalize against the Fang/Vanille relationship on sites like GameFAQs owned though, I just assumed the people in hardcore "here's six paragraphs" denial were straight nerds who felt like they couldn't jerk off to a lesbian anime or something.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/08/01/new-final-fantasy-xiii-game-just-entered-production I guess that could be something other than 13-3 but I doubt it. The only thing I mind is I wish I could play it sooner than what's implied in the article, seems like it's at least a year a away from coming out over here. And I'm just hoping since they'll be re-using a lot of assets but it'll probably be closer to two years at the earliest.

Does anyone have any experience with the fan-made English patch for FF12 International Zodiac Job System? I've been meaning to play through FF12 and that sounds like the version I want. Is the English patch a perfect transfer of the English subtitles to the Japanese game, or am I going to run into stuff like untranslated extra menus and formatting errors?

There are some formatting errors here and there but they're so few you'll barely notice them. Other than that, it's 99% English.

jivjov posted:I haven't spent much time with it, but I can confirm it works fine. Its a bitch and a half to install though. I'm 50 hours into the game (Balfonheim) and there are no major issues at all. The gambit menu is hosed because it was made for japanese text so it's narrower now and the text overlaps, but it's in no way gamebreaking. IZJS itself is kind of weird though. Because of the changes it's a very unbalanced game. You will either dominate over everything or die in 15 seconds. It's because you can now use Quickenings without depleting your MP so boss battles are easier but healing can be problematic because only White Mages get the best healing magic and they don't get many HP licences. It's also worth noting that some spells are now only found in the field, it's possible to completely miss out on essential stuff like Dispel if you're unlucky. But overall it's a really fun game, especially if you already beat the original once.

Also any FMV that involves a map isn't translated. I played through it a while back and it was really good, if a little different to normal FFXII. I played it entirely without haste though since there are more jobs than characters and I didn't pick any that had it.

Since I've never played it before, how should I build my characters in FFXII? I remember reading a few pages back that the stuff on GameFAQs was garbage. This is the regular version, not the International people are always talking about as I have no way of playing it. Also, is there any way to reverse the camera controls? They're really, really awkward for me.

Characters are good at everything so pick 3 characters of your choice and make them unto gods via the passive bonuses lie +x HP or +x strength. There is no reason to unlock licenses for equipment or spells you don't have yet, wait until you actually posses those things to unlock them. Additionally, a quickening adds an entire extra bars worth of MP to your characters so picking your favorite 3 characters and getting them their 2 quickenings ASAP is a godsend.
