I've been a big fan of Tangerine Dream's early material for a while, but I'm sort of at a loss as to where to approach their 80s material from. What albums of theirs embrace the sound they had on the Risky Business soundtrack?

I'd definitely go with the double-live album Poland. Quite a bit of it is along the same lines as the track you posted, and it's just generally a really good album, especially by '80s Tangerine Dream standards.

Edit: Not Tangerine Dream, but that specific track reminded me a lot of Crackerblocks by Ozric Tentacles.

This is kind of a strange request, but can anyone recommend any music with sort of a dark and moody banjo? Ideally just instrumental, but lyrics are fine too. Most stuff I hear that involves a banjo is a lighter, more uptempo bluegrass-y sound, but I'm looking for something slower and less cheerful.

I don't have much to list as examples, but the banjo on Johnny Cash's "Ain't No Grave" and the general sound and tone of some of 16 Horsepower's stuff comes to mind.

To me, Wild Beasts are sorta similar. The singer doesn't have a cool gruffy voice though, and they're not quite as good as Future Islands.

So what are the top 3 or 4 must-have albums this year so far? I prefer singer songwriter/world/pop/alternative with good singers; really anything with a good singer. Will accept strong hip-hop/instrumental/electronica/classical/jazz/industrial/whatever.

This is an incredibly broad question and almost impossible to answer but I think almost everyone would like the new Fiona Apple album which is excellent.

Maybe better asked: What's probably gonna win/get nominated a grammy so far? I don't want to wait till 2013 to get the grammy list =P

So I've been reading through the Foxy Shazam thread, and among other things the band is being recommended as a sort of surrogate Queen. And I have no problem with that. But another good "Queen-like" that I've come across is Paul Gilbert's album "United States." If you're familiar with Gilbert at all, you might either know him as a mega-shredder or "that guy from Mr. Big," but it's a pretty good Queen-esque rock album!

Here's a few of the tunes:

I've been looking for something similar to Mint Julep for months, and I still can't find anything. Their last album and EP is fantastic and I would love to find something like this band. It's kinda dream-pop mixed with some synthpop and shoegaze. Few songs:

Maybe I can get some help on this one. I used to be into downtempo in a really big way, but all I used to listen to were mixes, thus tracklists were hard to come by. I'm looking for some super relaxed, stylish acid-jazz / downtempo stuff. I used to be a big fan of a site called Headphonic. They hosted tons of great mixes. ProperlyChilled has become a bit too upbeat for my liking these days. I used to work in a call center and I would throw downtempo mixes on in my headphones while I worked which helped me put up with stupid customers. I need that sound again!

No idea if they'll be any good, but I always liked the Erotic Lounge series that Sony Germany put out. Not exactly easy to get in a real format (or cheap actually), though maybe they're on iTunes or whatever other silly thing there is like that. There's at least about a half dozen (if not more) in the series, all downtempo/Nu-Jazzy/occassionally deeper Housey stuff, and vaguely smooth, slinky and sexy - hence the name - but not in like, a dodgy, cheesy way or whatever.

Normally they split up the discs between a slow and soft side, and a bit more faster side (though they could've changed that on later volumes which I don't have, but I doubt it) but even any faster tempo stuff on the discs is the more in the range of the rolling, Zero 7-esque perfect for that home restoration programme on the telly sort, and not the big massive high energy thing so it's all cool (actually you could grab those first two Zero 7 albums while you're at it).

The series also get some extra bonus points for the front covers too, all kinda cheesy risque underwear model with soft lightning thing. I've seen a lot worse that's for sure.

I'm looking for two different types of related music. The first: Dirty House, minus the wub. This would be something along the lines of:

Futurecop! - As Seen on TV
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwzFdZ0Nf6Y

Danger - 11h30
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fr-iawLvNr4

Uppermost - Born Limitless
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMZWcJ5f86k

Justice - Phantom Pt. II
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZR035Mhd58o

Alongside that, I'm really into dirtier Electropop or that Electropop/House hybrid stuff along the lines of:

Keedz - Stand on the Word
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mG_eIDMOvfM

Madeon - Pop Culture
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2ExVvhzfCY

And to a lesser degree something like DVNO by Justice, Boys & Girls by Martin Solveig (but with a harder edge) or Weapon by M4SONIC (but more consistently pop-y).

Also, feel free to correct me on the names of the sub genres so I can seek this stuff out easier myself, since I'm sure I have them wrong. I'm really just looking for new artists or avenues to explore to find this stuff without having to crawl through a mountain of bad Dubstep or accidentally having to listen to Techno.

hey all.

For long I have periodically came back to the Grim Fandango soundtrack, and two pieces on that soundtrack have tormented my mind, because I haven't been able to really determine their specific genre or, most importantly, where to find more music of the kind.

First I have this, which is closer to what I want:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jT4A-MSQgoI

Rather Mexican, a bit of a Morricone-style touch, though that might just be the trumpets.

And then there's this, which has a bit more southern feel to it. Like it's straight from the Andes or so.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1riMeMvabu0

Searching for mariachi music has lead me to all sorts of Hollywoodish tourist crap that I do not want. Mainly I wish for music without singing, though if you have good suggestions, of course that is welcome as well.

So please, where can I find more music such as these two pieces?

El Marrow

Everybody here is just as dead as you.
Firstly, that was the greatest game ever made. Secondly, that was one of the best soundtracks ever written. It has a wonderful combination of Bebop, Swing, Jazz, and Mariachi, which blends perfectly with the games artistic fusion of Art Deco and Dia De Los Muertos icons.

Sadly, I haven't been able to find any comparable music, so you're not alone on this hunt.
