When I was in aviation maintenance school our final project for lockwire was two bolts inside a coffee can. It took me the whole 7 hour class day to do it and that was quite simple compared to this guys task.

I'm... undecided on the "torque steer compensation". I really liked the design of the revoknuckles, and while I'm sure the TSC system is very effective, I can't help but feel that a design that is intended to eliminate the issue, rather than a secondary system to cancel it out, is the better solution. And why the variable rack and overboost? Why not a static, middling-quick ratio, and if the engine will take 20psi, just have 20psi?
|
# ? Aug 2, 2012 21:43 |
|
The engine probably can't take 20 psi for extended periods. It's actually pretty smart because it will keep fuel usage down and streetability up. I know Nelson Racing Engines has used staged boost levels on a lot of their street car builds. Now the ST doesn't have a twin turbo v8, but I'd imagine it's similar thinking. e- speaking of, NRE is at it again. Seizure Meat fucked around with this message at 22:47 on Aug 2, 2012 |

That Jeep vid looked official to me until I saw the passenger with the bicycle helmet. Really? They should all be wearing actual helmets in that test.
|
# ? Aug 4, 2012 12:33 |

The bike helmet thing is pretty common in certain situations, I've seen people do the same thing with off-roading, where they wanted a little bit of extra protection without losing any peripheral vision, and it's up to them, I suppose. They're not wearing them to give the same protection as a proper helmet, just to avoid hurting themselves by bouncing their heads off the window or pillar as the car lurches. It's not meant to save their lives or prevent injury, just to take the edge off a painful bump. Given the nature of the test, I'm not so sure that's sensible, and I think an open-face helmet would be a good idea, but I know that there has been advice (e.g. from the SCCA) that you shouldn't wear a full-face helmet in a car with airbags, though what numbers that's based on isn't clear to me. After that first "Oh poo poo we're going over" moment, I think I'd have switched to a real helmet... Edit: Also, I think I'm in the "Test looks mildly rigged, and what did you think would happen if you did that in an SUV?" camp. InitialDave fucked around with this message at 14:09 on Aug 4, 2012 |

Tekne posted:While I'm no fan of SUVs, this smells really fishy, as he cuts the turn a lot harder and faster in the Grand Cherokee than he did in the videos with the VW Touareg and the Volvo XC70; the lack of recording instrumentation on the steering column is also curious. Then you have the fact that neither Chrysler's engineers or the German magazine that recently did the same test could produce these results. The Hilux had the same problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZF8N9NItHI And then Citroen's Nemo micro-MPV goes completely tits up, even though the identical-but-for-ESP Fiat is fine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcM9hkWrImU Now, I agree that it's not good that the Jeep behaves that way, but it's being used in a manner that isn't appropriate. The comparison should be made while also taking into account the relative off-road abilities of the vehicles, as that's what has to be balanced against the on-road performance, and I'm not convinced that the Volvo and VW are going to be as good in the dirt as a Jeep or Land Rover. What's really damning is the tyres popping on the subsequent tests. That should never happen.

In my mind, trying to drive away from it was not giving a poo poo about it. According to the Jalopnik article, that car was parked in a hotel valet zone by the valets, so the hothead owner should have gone in and yelled at the valets.

Are the cops a little rough with him? Maybe. I'm not sure. Looking at it from a point of view of "This person drove his car over my foot for a parking ticket. Not sure what he'll do when we arrest him for a felony", I can understand their decision to go for the more forceful approach.

Keep in mind, this is NYPD, which is especially proud of their "Stop and Frisk" program, where they literally stop people and frisk them with 9 out of 10 stops resulting in no problems found. To actually do something that stupid, not in front of but TO an NYPD officer? He's lucky that is all he got. The cop stepped in front of the car to be an obvious impediment to the driver, who was a complete rear end in a top hat. drat, it's a sad day when I'm even remotely on NYPD's side. I wonder what the bodywork cost will be on the Ferrari, I saw the scratches on the rear quarter at the end of the video, I'd have to think there's at least paint transfer and possibly dented metal where the door hit the cab.
