I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I heard that back when Silvio Berlusconi was still in power, he and Putin were holding a joint press conference. When a tough question was asked of Putin, Berlusconi reportedly smirked and made a finger pistol at the reporter. It's a proposed design for a warning to be placed above nuclear waste sites. The designers were tasked to come up with warnings that would last until the waste had decayed to safe levels- long past the death of our civilization. They tried to come up with designs that would scare people off, but eventually came to the conclusion that the best way to keep people from digging up nuclear waste would be to not leave any mark of civilization at all- after all, those ancient Egyptian curses sure didn't stop British archaeologists. Soviet Commubot posted:Basically, I was really kinda shocked at how I managed to passively eat up all of this propaganda about the guy. I recognized some of the more blatant things as propaganda, like his shirtless hunting and vase diving but I seriously fell for a lot of the more stubtle stuff. This is exactly how propaganda works though. I don't think there are very many people who really believe that vase diving and shirtless hunting crap. The only ones who would are already so far up Putins rear end that the propaganda doesn't need to target them anyway. However, studies have shown that those who are aware of how advertising works are actually more susceptible to it, probably because they think they won't fall for it due to their knowledge about it, and then let their guard down. So perhaps because Putins cult of personality propaganda is so blatantly "big burly manly man accomplishes big burly manly man things", you fell for the idea of him being a big burly manly man, even if you didn't believe in his over the top 'accomplishments'.

Context: Windmills vs Oil Sands in Canada. Guess which one of the two are meeting local public resistance? As bad as ~14 dead birds per turbine a year is, I get a feeling the hydro fracking might be killing more birds. e: the Wolf Island concerns linked is an example of extreme amounts of birds being killed (again, 14ish a year). The normal number in Ontario is about 2 per turbine.

There is an incredibly interesting documentary about this called Into Eternity. It's about a huge cave called Onkalo being built in Finland to house nuclear waste. The waste should lay dormant for 100 000 years, and the documentary asks how we can possibly imagine building something so lasting. How can we understand how long 100 000 years actually is, and yet we're trying to safely store material that will be deadly for that long.

To be fair don't most of the really dangerous isotopes burn out in the first couple hundred years or so? radio active decay can only produce a fixed amount of radiation so the longer the half life of an element the safer it is to be around for a given period of time.
