Can anyone recommend a good system monitor widget? Something to quickly see stuff like cpu speed, ram usage, battery level, etc. If it's skinnable or at least able to have a transparent background, that's a plug.

Android System Info has a widget that has exactly that, and tapping it takes you to the app where there's a lot more of the same, in detail. I don't think it's beautify-able though.

I'm using Tasker on my S3 to disable the lock screen, and it seems to work for a bit, but if I leave the phone longer than a few minutes, next time I turn it on, the lock screen is back. Anyone else had this, or know a solution? edit: Just noticed there is a specific Tasker thread, my bad. I will ask there.

Elixir 2 Widgets looks nice, I'm not sure if the icons are skinnable but it does have different backgrounds whose transparency levels you can change. It's also really customizable, and you can add toggles and app shortcuts in alongside your system info. I just installed it as a stand-alone, I didn't need all the other stuff the main Elixir 2 app does but it offers some expanded functionality.

It's a multi-panel file browser, so basically your source folder is on the left, and then you swipe over to the right to get to the destination folder. Makes things a lot easier if you are moving multiple files to the same folder. I really like Total Commander, it's similar to Ghost Commander, but I prefer the buttons on Total Commander, plus I've been using it a while so I'm more used to it.

Lowen SoDium posted:Uh, I used application-specific passwords for my phone and tablet with out any issue. How strange. I was originally looking for a way to manage and access my Keepass file - having a 64-character Google account password might be secure, but if I don't know that password in the first place, keeping it inside Google Drive makes it somewhat difficult to retrieve the file later. Like opening a box with the key inside! What I did was change my Google account password on my PC. This pops up the usual 'account authorisation failed' prompt on my phone and N7, so I jumped at the opportunity to use 2FA instead of my Google account password; should the worst happen, disable the device using Cerberus, and revoke the 2FA password for good measure. It didn't work; at the browser sign-in screen that pops up, it asked for my account password, not a 2FA password. I've since had a play around on my N7, and found that removing my Google account then adding it again using a 2FA password worked. I've no idea what kind of technical difference there is that requires removing and re-adding my account, but whatever. At least now I only really need to have memorised two passwords: my Google account password, and my Keepass file password. [edit] Hopefully, this news about potential multi-user support in future Android versions spurs development towards a one-stop-shop, user-friendly account management system; 'here is your account, it is currently logged into device x, want to log out of that guy's tablet you logged into yesterday? ok you can click here to remove that nexus one you sold eighteen months ago, by the way over there's all the apps you purchased, device x has A, B and C installed, device y has D and E installed' etc. spincube fucked around with this message at 22:16 on Aug 8, 2012 |

Like I said I was kind of chasing UI consistency since I was so enamored with GoodNews' good looks over Listen I thought I'd try to replace EStrongs with something that looked a little more up to date but in the end I felt like I traded one kind of UI inconsistency for another and adopted a lot of problems along the way (like the network issues I was having). I'm glad Android finally has a style that's attractive and useful but all the stuff that looked better than average on Gingerbread just looks so dated on 4.0+.

I apologize if this is going to come off as a noob post. I recently purchased a cheap Andoid tablet. Seriously, it was $42 with free shipping. I immediately updated it with the latest firmware. I got it primarily for my daughter as a birthday gift, so she can play educational apps that I put on there as well as Angry Birds (which she loves). My problem is, it isn't recognized by google as being a legit mobile device (for some reason) and I can't get access to the google play store. Instead it has a SlideME app but everything in that store looks like fake crap. Is there any legitimate way (without rooting it, I really don't feel comfortable rooting it since I don't know what I'm doing) to download legit apps? I have two android phones with the apps installed - is there any way to copy those over? Should I just download the APK files from amazon (or wherever) and just not have access to the google play store? It can take a micro SD card, so I can install stuff off of that. It would just be a lot easier if I had google Play access from the tablet.

This has probably been asked before, but is there any app that can clean up files and folders that are left behind by apps I uninstall? I've got a bunch of leftover crap files from old apps that are making a mess, and I'd love to get rid of them without having to sort through everything by hand.

I just felt GoodNews to be too visually cluttered and I don't like the "drill down" sort of layout. I love pulse because I can glace over a ton of headlines at once from different sources and decide what I want to look at first. GoodNew just seemed like one step above just opening up Reader and browsing my feeds there. Maybe it's because I don't really listen to PodCasts? Is that where the real strength is?

GoodNew just seemed like one step above just opening up Reader and browsing my feeds there. Others prefer to have a shitload of RSS feeds and don't particularly care if they see everything. They look at it like a TiVo with Suggestions turned on, they just want something they'll be interested in somewhere, like a magazine. If that's the way you use RSS you will not like GoodNews and would probably prefer something like Pulse or Currents or stuff that "magazine-ifies" feeds. But for me Reader support was secondary although surprisingly good for getting around specific problems I was having the official Reader app. I was mostly interested in replacing Listen and to that end it's fantastic. I haven't had the problem the other guy had with it downloading off wifi and it does so just fine, the player works perfectly with Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean AOSP lockscreen controls, and the queuing feature is seamless and well-implemented compared to Listen's UI disaster. Managing downloaded content is easy without being hidden in the UI and the options for handling everything seems to be comprehensive. I will say that as with RSS feeds, I have very few podcast subscriptions and I listen to everything from each feed. I might feel differently if I were the kind of person who had a shitload and then just picked one here and there to actually consume.

In GoodNews you can drill down or get a long list of all headlines across all your feeds or across the feeds in just a particular folder. I have lots of feeds but I read the headlines across all of them in chronological order.

Splashtop 2 HD is finally out for Android. If you haven't used it before you should really check it out. It's the absolute best way to remote control Windows/Mac computers, and the new version is properly encrypted! Unfortunately it's also now a $10/year service. However, current users of Splashtop get a year free (unless you're on iOS, then it's lifetime. ) I emailed support to get my year free upgrade, and to voice my displeasure in their giving iOS upgrades free for life, and the CEO himself replied granting me a lifetime subscription! Great customer service!

Getting Play Store installed will be a big hassle and may even be impossible. One of the ways that Google (try to) protect their ecosystem is by restricting Play access to devices that do not pass a kind of accreditation to confirm that they meets certain standards that Google set out.

One thing I'll warn about is that PDF isn't particularly flexible in its presentation. Some PDF documents are "friendly" in that all their text is contained in organized strings that lend themselves nicely to reflow. Other documents are "unfriendly" in that the positions of individual words or glyphs are hardcoded, only contain vectorized glyphs, or worst of all, consist of scanned bitmaps of entire pages. Point being is that, if most of the documents you're looking at are of the "unfriendly" type, I'm not sure how well (if at all) text reflow will work on them.

CornHolio posted:Is there a way to download apps using my phone and save them to my microSD card in such a fashion that I can plug that card into the tablet and install it on another device? If you have a rooted phone, you can download an app, grab its .apk from /data/app (this is the part that requires root), throw it on an SD card and sideload it onto the "tablet". However that only works for the simplest of apps. This won't work with DRM'd paid apps. It also might not work with apps where Play hosts multiple versions depending on the device profile and OS version it's running. Honestly, the best thing you can do is install the Amazon Appstore and just install whatever is available there. If the Appstore doesn't work then you're hosed. Personally--and I really don't mean to harp on you too badly--but you bought a digital picture frame with a touchscreen, not a tablet. It's not just the ill-fitting hardware and massively out of date OS, but the fact that the device comes without an ounce of actual manufacturer support. I feel like the fact that you're trying to shoehorn Play, or Play-downloaded apps at least, onto the device, suggests you really don't understand how ill-fitting the device actually is. Hopefully you can get Amazon to work OK enough on it to be worth $42.
