TapTheForwardAssist posted:I'm fond of the slur "ring knocker" myself. For those unfamiliar, graduates of US service academies have these huge, gaudy Jostens-esque class rings. I've heard varying etymologies, but personally my understanding was that Academy grads could call upon their ol' boys network advantage by knocking their ring against the table to emphasise that they were Academy grads vice nasty plebians who went to State schools and then graduated Officer Candidate School. Completely anecdotal, but I didn't particularly notice Academy grads as being any better or worse officers than anyone else, which is pretty baffling considering they spend four years in a military environment before commissioning. Whereas other officers were either in ROTC and spent a scattering of hours per week doing .mil stuff, or are plain OCS graduates who wore hippy hair and nipple piercings and got drunk through all of college, but then got a wild hair and passed a drat 8-10 week course and got the exact same lieutenants bars as the other schmucks. Fun fact: class rings got their start at west point and spread as a tradition from there.

TheFluff posted:Also, I think drafting might be good for the military, too. I mean, most of the people who are drafted (everyone from academics to electricians) would never consider joining the army under ordinary circumstances, so the talent pool for a drafted army is gigantic. The kind of people who actively want to be soldiers are usually people you probably wouldn't want to be soldiers anyway. The Finnish military does a very bad job of utilizing the skills of conscripts, outside of a few very specific cases you'll just get assigned to general infantry/armor etc. I tried to get a specialist spot but the conscription board told me to apply when I got to the garrison, and on getting there was told I should have applied when I was in front of the conscription board. Most people aren't even aware of the "opportunities" and only see a quick slideshow on the selection day, you have to actively seek out information so it clearly favors gung-ho types. People volunteer for N/CO training rather than being selected so you still get plenty of sociopaths in leading roles. Most of these guys are under 20 so its always nice for the people who went to get educated first to be bossed around by a spotty peach fuzz faced ego tripping kid, who thinks that after a couple months of being walked through group leader "exercises" and sleeping through "lectures" he's somehow gained the ability to lead people. This is a sheet used to cover your bunk during the day and for evening inspection it must be folded onto a stool in front of your bed. You have to get the squares lined up and other various insane criteria, this particular example would not be up to par if the NCO felt like being a dick. You'd be forced to redo it and the group, possibly the platoon, would have to wait prior to being dismissed for the night. Someone's no doubt going to say it teaches group cohesion and spirit, but do it with something useful like maintenance. More time is spent on folding these sheets than on actual weapons training, the time that someone will actually guide you not just holding it during an exercise. I particularly enjoyed having to teach other recruits how to use their sights since the N/COs sure as hell weren't checking. But every night while in barracks you'd need to fold that sheet according to guidelines. If you're going to conscript people for the purpose of national defense you could at least try to make sure the time is spent on training conducive to that goal. That's Goebbels' villa.

Before, unions were like traffic or something annoying, but an integral part of the world that serves a purpose. Now, with the Tea Party, the very notion that unions should be allowed to exst is anathema. Edit: crap, Megarule http://www.keiththompsonart.com/pages/four_horsemen.html quote:And I saw when the uniformed man opened one of the files, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four monitors saying "Come and see." I saw, and behold on the screen was a white horse: and he that sat on him had a rifle; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer. I yearn for the day where I can scream the lyrics and dance to this song in public. I am a shameful aristocrat, but I want to be in the bar where this song is shouted... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NniiRALdKU8 Youtube video of Strawbs - Part of the Union Now I'm a union man Amazed at what I am I say what I think, that the company stinks Yes I'm a union man When we meet in the local hall I'll be voting with them all With a hell of a shout, it's "Out brothers, out!" And the rise of the factory's fall Oh, you don't get me, I'm part of the union You don't get me, I'm part of the union Until the day I die The union has made me wise To the lies of the company spies And I don't get fooled by the factory rules 'cause I always read between the lines And I always get my way If I strike for higher pay When I show my card to the Scotland Yard And this is what I say: Oh, oh, you don't get me, I'm part of the union You don't get me, I'm part of the union Until the day I die Before the union did appear My life was half as clear Now I've got the power to the working hour And every other day of the year So though I'm a working man I can ruin the government's plan And though I'm not hard, the sight of my card Makes me some kind of superman Oh, oh, oh, you don't get me, I'm part of the union You don't get me, I'm part of the union My blue collar friends confuse trade unions for labor unions and think they are the same thing. They think leftists empower trade unions... arg... loving teachers and firefighters policemen how do they ever help taxpayers, they are like burglars (If the invisible hand of the free market works, then scabs ought to be able to leave the union and work for lower wages if that is their natural wage ) No-Jokes Feynman fucked around with this message at 11:48 on Aug 13, 2012 |
