I've always wanted to know if ads like that get any response. I see them all the time on kijiji, and sometimes even on enthusiast BMW forums.

If it does, I bet the no-good goddamn dirty son of a sperm-belching road whore won't respond (and won't delete the ad after it's sold, either). Craigslist sellers suck

ElBrak posted:http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/cto/3193228765.html Biggest problem will be rust (from Seattle that should hopefully be OK) and electrical gremlins. ECUs, digital dash (if you have one) and crank angle sensors are probably the largest culprits. If it runs OK though and is decent enough inside, might be worth it. If you take a look at it, make sure you look UNDER the toolkit in the hatch, next to the spare tire. It's a well known rust area as water can get behind the tailights and sit there where it can't evaporate.

They are known to have a couple of common issues, but nothing that will ever break you down or really even need to get fixed. Thanks for the advice, I've looked at the used car inspection steps listed in the AI Resources and References page, and on several Nissan Z car pages and forums, so I hope i got a good idea of what to look at. Also I just checked the craigslist page for the car again and the owner dropped it to 1300 bucks from 1500 bucks. So now i definitely gotta take a look cause either something is really wrong with it, or its becoming a better and better deal.

ElBrak posted:http://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/cto/3193228765.html I wouldn't be worrying about a 20-year-old accident either. A non-turbo auto is probably going to be pretty bombproof in terms of "being able to drive it around." Now, any $1500 car with 190K miles on it is going to have a whole pile of issues. Here is what they will probably be on a z31: - transmission mount - differential mount (not as much on an NA auto, but over 190K miles, yeah, this will go) - massive number of vacuum hoses that work the climate control are all blown - bunch of goofy stuff for cold start and idle control that you don't actually need but makes the car seem weird when it's in place but broken - engine needs a major service for timing belt/water pump/sensor every 60K or so - shocks and struts are probably blown and every suspension bushing on the car is hosed - some asshat tried to jack it wrong at some point and crushed a frame rail which now has a big rusty hole in it - like slidebite says there are a couple huge rust spots if you live in a wet climate. Under the rear toolkit is easy to check but there's another one under the passenger carpet which is really hard to check. Of the above only the suspension stuff and vac stuff is new-wrench-friendly. Now if you are just looking for a $1500 car to drive for a year this is all stuff you can ignore, you will just have a car that clunks and rattles and vibrates on acceleration and the timing belt may go and blow up the engine... so, a $1500 car like any other. If you're specifically looking for a z31 to drive for a while, unless it is totally rust-free I would probably pass on this one, save a few more dollars, and look for a lower-miles one. You can buy pretty nice z31s for under $5K and they are not actually that complicated or hard to work on, just cramped. And the cool thing is that even an NA with an auto that's slow as poo poo off the mark, if you fix up the suspension you have a car that looks like an 80s porn star and handles in ways that feel like arcane sorcery on a car that size. btw z31 thread: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3489554

Thanks for all the advice everybody, I think I will still take a look at it, if just to get some experience looking at a used car when I know what to look for. But I am not sure if i'll buy it now. I'll keep my eye out for other z31 cars though, I really like how they look. I've been looking at Honda Civics as well and i've seen a few that look hopeful. But i'm not sure if i should post them since I don't wanna turn this thread into "Recommend me a Used Car." unless that is alright, or if their is a thread for that sort of thing. Edit: Oh screw it. Everyone I know who has had a mid 80's through mid 90's civic/accord has had it stolen from them at least once. The Prizm is just a rebadged corolla and a great little car, but with the auto they are absolutely gutless. On the plus side, they just love to cruise at 30mph and car be steered with 1 finger. My mom has one pretty much identical to that, except red with the sweet red velour interior, and it makes a great around town car. But this is AI, so I must suggest this..... volvo 780 bertone turbo - $1500 (seattle) Actually it seems to be in pretty good shape mechanically and you cant argue with the Bertone styling.... slurry_curry fucked around with this message at 00:33 on Aug 14, 2012 |

I drove the Civic and the Prizm yesterday, they both seemed alright. Though I don't got much experience looking at cars yet. The Prizm looked rust free and the interior was alright. I didn't see about the auto since I was just driving it around at 25 miles and hour in the industrial park the used car place was at. The Civic had a lot of its trim on the outside falling off, but it drove alright. My Grandma gave me a ride down to take a look at it, and she thought it might of been in a unreported accident by how the front bumper was from a different year of Civic and the replacement parts in the engine. That Volvo does seem pretty AI, and it would be an interesting way to learn to drive a stick, i'm assuming its a manual. I don't know if its still for sell but I just sent the owner a email to see if it is.

I would go with the prizm. I had one of those for a bit just after high school and it was a really good car. It was pretty reliable, easy to maintain and was cheep on gas. God knows there are a million and a half corollas in junk yards if replacement parts are ever needed.
