A bit disappointed at the hole in the cover but besides that this record is pretty well close to mint :woop:

Such a good album, very glad I decided to buy it.

Pelican - Australasia (clear orange)

Thin Lizzy - Black Rose (gently caress yes)
Animals as Leaders - S/T (Glow in the dark)
Kings of Leon - Holy Roller Novocaine EP (clear red)

For whatever reason, Thin Lizzy records just aren't that common in the wild, at least in my area. If you do see anything, it's typically a beat-to-poo poo copy of Jailbreak or Live & Dangerous (Johnny the Fox or Chinatown if you're lucky), certainly not Black Rose (though I assume this could be a recent reissue pressing based on the condition of it). In related news, we got the Light in the Attic reissue of their self-titled in at work today, though I haven't had a chance to look at it other than seeing that it came in. LitA do great reissues, even though they're kind of expensive. Might be worth revisiting since I've long been of the opinion that Thin Lizzy didn't really hit their stride until Night Life or Fighting, despite having a some good songs scattered across the albums before those.

I've only even seen Jailbreak a handful of times. Live and Dangerous pops up every now and then, but I already have that. Not really sure how though since I never paid for it.

I picked up a bunch of cheap records the other day (mostly sample source crap), but lucked out on a Tampere SS 7" and The Boy With the Arab Strap for $6! Right in the front of the new arrival section too.

So I need a new turntable because I'm pretty sure the one I've got is total poo poo, also it doesn't have a dust cover and the kitty cat loves to scratch vinyl.

Is this one good enough? Or are there other sub-$100 turntables that are better?

Speaking of Aphex Twin reissues, SAW II got a reissue in may. I don't know how I missed this since I check bleep and warp almost every day trying to catch these things. Anyway turns out it's just the CD version pressed on vinyl, missing E4, Stone In Focus. I don't see the point in that, but I didn't catch it until I impulse bought it. Oh well, I still have my hosed up original pressing.

I never post "haul" pics, but I was pretty pleased with the stuff I grabbed this week. Nothing rare, but all stuff I'll listen to (yes, even Trans), which is the point as far as I'm concerned. Better yet, outside of the Glass Candy/Symmetry, the rest cost me a whopping $4 and some change after trading in a small stack of crap I never listened to.

Symmetry - Themes From an Imaginary Film
Glass Candy - Geto Boys 12"
Glass Candy - Beatbox
Tangerine Dream - Exit
Thin Lizzy - Chinatown
Thin Lizzy - Bad Reputation
Larry Coryell - Barefoot Boy
Larry Coryell - The Restful Mind
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Between Nothingness & Eternity Live
Pierre Moerlen's Gong - Time is the Key
Neil Young - Zuma
Neil Young - Trans
Eddie Hazel - Game, Dames and Guitar Thangs
Blackbyrds - City Life
Steven Wright - I Have a Pony

The Thin Lizzy records kind of undermine my comment from a few days ago since I forgot they were in my hold bin. I was also impressed with the condition of Bad Reputation in particular since records with predominantly white or black covers tend to look like poo poo at a significantly higher rate in my experience. (I still haven't stumbled across a copy of Blue Oyster Cult's Secret Treaties that didn't look like it was used as a doormat).

On the contrary, that appears to be an Acoustic Research XA, their first model but a fairly well respected turntable.

It's a belt drive unit with a suspended sub-platter (desirable feature that helps eliminate outside vibrations reaching the stylus). It's a very solid performer.

Most people replace the cheap RCA cables with something nicer and of course you will want to replace the cartridge if you don't know the last time it was replaced. Be careful attaching the new cartridge that you don't strip the threads in the plastic headshell, the headshell is not cheap to replace.

Some questions. My grandmother just sent me all the records that belonged to her, my mother, and my uncle (numbering about 200 total). They were not kept in the greatest of conditions, and as a result some look kind of gross.

Some particularly bad examples:

Can they be cleaned, or are they a lost cause? I know I'll need some new jackets and sleeves. If they can be cleaned, what would my best bet be? Thanks!

This burrito is delicious, but it is filling.
Any record can be cleaned, but if they are scratched, that is permanent.

Plain old water and a little bit of dish soap will clean most to a pretty good standard. I guess you could use distilled water if your local water sources is mineral heavy or the record is exceedingly rare.

Maybe you could use some less desirable ones and do some before/after wood glue experiments.

Ah cool! I was kinda worried about the arm, like it's just got some weight on the end and there isn't really any way to fine tune how heavily it sits on the surface of the vinyl. So like, it sits pretty heavy... Is that fine?

Also can I just jam any old new needle in?

The weight at the end should twist to adjust. Twisting towards the back of the pivot will lighten the tracking force.

Styli are proprietary fit, but it looks like it fits a standard half inch cartridge. I'd always recommend investigating the existing cartridge in vintage turntables as it could be a very desirable model that after market styli are still available for.

I picked up a copy today because Hot Topic has BOGO 1/2 off, so I got that and Hot Water Music - Caution for $20 total. The album is alright, sounds like most other of their albums with but not quite as catchy, but the cover jacket for that one is of the better I've seen recently.

The deal is also valid online, so if you still haven't bought In/Casino/Out, you can use that and something else too. Hot Topic is kind of surprising me for its quality of punk vinyl.

It's just your basic promo sticker, as pictured (excuse cell phone pic and bed sheets I'm a little embarrassed by, but not enough to replace them):

A few of these (and lots more I've bought in the past 6 months) came from a massive collection we bought at the store I work at. Probably 6-7,000 records total; lots of promos and cut-outs, but all basically unplayed for the most part. Several hundred test pressings, several dozen audiophile pressings, etc. If it was on or distributed by Warner Brothers and their affiliated labels in the early 70s through the early 80s, there was probably a copy of it in there. I've been rounding out a fairly respectable jazz fusion collection with stuff from that collection, filling in a few other gaps here and there, and we still have probably a third or so of it to still go through and price.

It's absolutely awesome. I got the deluxe hand numbered version with the outer sleeve (which was sealed with stamped wax). The poster is full size (might be deluxe version only), the prints look great (one is the baby, one is the baby's head on Henry's body, and the third is the Man in the Planet), and the book looked quality even though I've only briefly flipped through it.

Here's a crappy cellphone pic of it on my lovely futon

I actually had no idea the 7" even existed until right before I took the pic. When I first opened it and went through everything I didn't find it.
