Okay, so I couldn't sleep the other night so I started replying a game and thought I'd share it with you guys.

I've chosen a SSLP because although the game does have tiny cut scenes, most of them are lifted straight from the show the game is based on and are very generic.

I'll leave it at that for now and let you discover "exhibit A" for yourselves.

I just read through your stuff and I thought it looked like a pretty good start. I think it looks like you've got an interesting game to do (maybe I'm biased because I'm totally gay for Grissom), and even a nice touch of audience participation.

OK I'm planning on a run through of Pride of Nations - a grand strategy game by Ageod. I'll probably play as the USA, and since the game models a congress, I would like to have people participate as congressmen and congresswomen of their own district, submitting bills and such for a vote.

The model I'm thinking of is for people to sponsor a bill which seeks to implement a policy. I can then have a few people assigned to secretary positions (army, navy, state) etc who will give directions to implement the policy which has received a plurality of votes (given the pool of voters changes, it will be impossible to have a majority vote).

Members can also submit private member bills for their own district for an appropriation to build a coal mine or railway or somesuch. The private bill which receives the most votes will also be implemented.

Since the game is 70 years long, with 2 week turns (ridiculous I know) I'm planning on having two congressional sessions per year. With 2 bills (one policy, one private) implemented each term. I will then burn through 6 months and do an update of what happened.

Is this too complicated? Or should I simplify it? I can have a google doc like grey hunter to keep track of votes.

This seems like it would be a fun thing to participate in, but it's a bit hard to envision just based on your text here. Does the game have a certain set of bills people would be choosing from to pass? It might help if you posted an example of gameplay with you making all the decisions, and then explain how audience participation would be involved.

I've heard of this kind of thing in the past with games like CK2 resulting in a lot of discussion over minor details wrecking the thread. However, in the threads I've seen the OPs have handled audience votes very well by always moving on within a given timeframe. That keeps the thread progressing instead of deadlocked.

It doesn't seem to complicated but some things might be redundant. I'm not sure I understand why you'd need both congress people and the secretaries. Again, having an example of gameplay might help.

Have you read the Crete Europa Universalis LP by Wiz? It tried to do almost exactly the same thing. Some people loved it, others loathed it; I sort of wonder how it would develop with a real country instead of a silly ancient parallel-universe kingdom.

In other words, it's doable and I personally would like to see it happen. But the thread is likely to spiral into some serious drama.

If you do it like the Crete thread I would suggest making a separate thread for the Goon Congress. One of the main problems people had with the Crete thread was having to slog through a million posts of Debate they weren't there to partake in to get to an update. Having the Congress be it's own thread should resolve this problem fairly cleanly though you may have to moderate your thread a bit to keep Debates about Bills from going to far in the main LP thread.

Let's Play The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass [VLP] (Any title suggestions?)

Game Description

The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass is the fourteenth installment in the Legend of Zelda franchise and was released in October 2007. It's the first of the two Zelda games that were released on the Nintendo DS.
It's an action-adventure game that uses only the DS' touch screen to control the game. The game features 3D cel-shaded graphics similar to those of The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, while using an overhead perspective camera which in turn is similar to that of the older Zelda titles like A Link to the Past.

The story starts off right after the events of Wind Waker. While travelling across the Great Seas in search of new land Link, Tetra and her pirate crew come across what appears to be an eerie-looking ghost ship. Tetra immediately boards the ship in the hope of finding valuable treasure and soon thereafter is heard screaming. While Link attempts to follow her, he slips and falls in the ocean. What happened to Tetra? Will Link stop being a clumsy gently caress? Will he succumb to a recurring, tedious dungeon?
Find out in Let's Play The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass!

About the LP

This LP will be in a video format with voice commentary by me, French Accent and The Wicked Wall. As per usual, I'm going to try my best to inform you about the many aspects of the game.
If everything goes as planned I will be updating every Friday with about 20 to 40 minutes worth of Zelda goodness.

This will be a complete playthrough, intending to show off most if not all content available in the game. Of course this includes all the various upgrades that can be obtained as we play through the game.

:siren: Regarding spoilers, if you really insist on having to post a spoiler, please tag them appropriately. :siren:

Characters

Link is our protagonist, as you might have come to expect from a Zelda game. This iteration is, like the one from Wind Waker, a young boy wearing the iconic green tunic and hat. It's his goal to rescue Tetra from the unknown evil, and return to the Great Seas with her safely.

Tetra is once again the damsel in distress. She's the leader of a mighty (?) pirate crew and sails across the Great Seas in search for new land with Link. She's quite tomboyish in nature, acting bossy whenever she gets the opportunity to do so. Also she's secretly Zelda in disguise but didn't know this before Wind Waker.

This is Linebeck. He's a "a real man of the sea". Linebeck travels the world on ship, the S.S. Linebeck, seeking for treasure. It's the one and only thing that drives him to do, well, anything, which includes helping out our protagonist, Link. While he tries to keep up the posture of a brave adventurer, he's actually quite the coward. He's still a cool guy in my book though.

Oshus is an old man living on Mercay Island. He has the appearance of a short, old and grey-bearded man with a big red cane that resembles a seashell. It appears that he has been taking care of Ciela before she found Link washed ashore. There is more to this man than meets the eye.

Items

This will get updated as we play through the game.

This is the sword that was given to Link by Oshus to aid him on his journey to save Tetra. With it Link can perform a sword thrust, sideways slash, jump attack and spin attack by inputting various motions on the touch screen.

This wooden shield will protect you from certain attacks, like those from small animals or projectiles. It's bought from the shop of Mercay Island for a mere 80 Rupees. Unlike most Zelda titles, this is the only shield Link will obtain in his adventure.

These are the Gems of Courage, Power and Wisdom respectively. There are 20 of each of these type gems spread around the sea, and while they might seem useless at first they will prove to be useful later on when you've collected enough of them.

These are, as you might have guessed, potions. The red potion restores only six hearts worth of health, but is priced appropriately. The purple potion on the other hand is much more expensive, and yet 'only' heals eight hearts. On top of this the purple potion automatically revives you if your health ends up dropping below one heart. The yellow potion is much rarer than the previous two types, but upon drinking the potion it will fully restore all of Link's health.

Like Bellmaker said, too long. Try to split it into ~twenty minute parts. You're also very soft spoken, it becomes hard to hear you at parts. It sounds like you auto-ducked the audio a bit, so I recommend fooling around with it a bit more so you are louder.

It might be good to see a full post, first of all it would be good to know about the kind of game this is and because it's a bit awkward when you refer to the main character by name when he hasn't even been introduced yet.

Video's 45 minutes long? If this is going to be a VLP you might want to cut the video down to more digestible chunks. Also while it looks like most of the loading screens are part of cutscenes, you probably don't have to show the ones that aren't.

Your voice is pretty muted when you start explaining the Angels. You might want to speak up a bit so it doesn't sound like you're mumbling so much. When the music picks up it practically drowns you out completely.

Also you don't mention the health system until about a half-hour in (though granted it's easy to guess it before that point). That kind of information would be good to point out earlier, like in the initial fight you have to lose.

Good job describing the watcher's mechanics during the second fight, though it would have been great to see you win even if you didn't have to. Also the video ends very abruptly, it's good you don't talk over cutscenes but you could have done an outro before the final one started.

Overall it didn't seem like there was anything particularly wrong the game or the commentary, it just seemed...long.

Edit: Heh, other people beat me to it but yeah, what they said.

WELL THAT JUST HAPPENED!

On the Bronzestabbed thread, I started to write a look-back on previous Dwarf Fortress Succession LPs. It was well received, but a few posters thought that such a history should have it's separate thread.

I'm still not convinced that making a whole new thread for examining old LPs is appropriate. Still, I'll repost what I wrote in order to get general feedback.

Dwarf Fortress LP History - Boatmurdered, pt. 1

Before we begin, I should describe how I'm going to be writing these posts. I hope to chart the evolution of these LPs-show when certain styles became standard and how they influenced future overseers and their updates. I will make note of changes in the game itself when I can, but frankly my lack of experience means that I'm not well equipped to explain the changes that have been made between versions. If there is a Dwarf Fortress veteran that would like to contribute in this regard, I would be very appreciative.

In addition, I'm going to be grading each overseer. My opinions are, of course, subjective, but I will do my best to explain why I think one contributor is better than another. Also, my standards are, perhaps unfairly, adjusted to fit the context in which it was made-a bare-bones update in the Boatmurdered LP will be seen more favorably than one that's more recent.

With all that said, let's begin!

Synopsis posted:

This is a Masterwork Let's Play. All craftsgoonship is of the highest quality. The Let's Play menances of spikes of cheetos dust and beer cans.
On the Let's Play is the rendition of an elephant and a group of dwarves. The elephant is striking down the dwarves.
On the Let's Play is the rendition of a well-designed image of a cheese. The image of a cheese is burning.
On the Let's Play is the rendition of former overseer Sankis and former overseer Mystic Mongol. Sankis is creating an engraving. Mystic Mongol is drowning.
On the Let's Play is the rendition of former overseer Sankis and a marksdwarf. Sankis is throwing a tantrum and is on fire. the marksdwarf is in a fetal position.

The Dwarf Fortress that produced the Boatmurdered LP is quite different from the current version-even a layman can tell the differences. Perhaps the most obvious is that it is entirely 2D-dwarves simply dig further to the right to go 'deeper' into the mountain. Less obvious is that the LP was made prior to the creation of the Let's Play subforum-this was still the Wild West of LPs, where the ROMhacks ran free and text adventures played gayly. In this wilderness, TourretteDog sought to build the impossible-an LP that was not the work of one man, but the collective efforts of bored, lonely goons everywhere. And so on November 9, 2006, he began his mysterious construction.

First Overseer of Boatmurdered-TourreteDog
In the early days, there was no throng of posters asking to be 'dorfed' like there is today. In fact, the idea of naming dwarfs after even overseers did not start until partway into this LP! In addition, there is no overarching metaplot; just seven dwarfs setting out to build a new home for their kind.

Some things are the same then as they were now. Although perhaps not as harrowing as Bronzestabbed's environs, the land in which Boatmurdered was established had its dangers.

You see, the old Dwarf Fortress didn't have Forgotten Beasts to keep players awake at night-it had motherfucking elephants. And Boatmurdered had a whole lot of elephants to deal with.

Although expectations were non-existent, and not much of anything happened save a few dog-on-mandrill battles, TourretteDog does a pretty good job in getting the fortress started while also building up the expectation of DF insanity in the future. TourretteDog strikes a good balance between explaining the challenges of getting a fortress off the ground without overwhelming the layman with details. He also lays down some clever (if ineffective) ways to deal with the threats facing the fortress.

Final Grade: B

Tourretedog posted:

"What does worry me is the wildlife. They're too quiet, I know they're planning something."

One of the advantages of 2D Dwarf Fortress is that it's easy to show the extent of the fortress in one image.

To be honest, I'm not sold on this being a viable independent thread. I like the effort, but to appreciate the chronicle, people would probably have to have read the original LPs, which means it wouldn't really be an independent project, more like something along the lines of a nostalgia trip for those who already read Dwarf Fortress threads. So my suggestion would be to keep it an accompaniment of the current game.

Also, it would be easier to judge your style if you showed some of the more insane periods of Boatmurdered, just to see how well the experience survives in this shortened form.

Okay, OP:

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is an action-platformer/spectacle fighter published by Ignition Games and lead developer Takeyasu Sawaki, a character designer for Devil May Cry and Okami. It was released in mid-late 2011 to B - B+ reviews, with critics loving its powerful, unique art style and beautiful soundtrack, but found the gameplay repetitive and the combat shallow.

It's set in the Book of Enoch (more specifically, its first section, The Book of Watchers), an apocryphal text considered non-canon by most Jewish and Christian faiths. It stars Enoch, son of Jared. Enoch is canonically notable for being seven generations down from Adam, the father of Methusela, the great-grandfather of Noah, and one of only two humans ever to enter Heaven before dying. He's also sometimes credited as the inventor of Writing and Sewing.

The Book of Watchers is a pretty simple story. 200 angels get huge 5-dimensional boners for some human women, abandon Heaven to get it on, breed a race of giant, murderous omnivores named the Nephilim, give humanity advanced technology and divination techniques, and generally ruin the entire human race. God gets mad, sends Enoch to tell the 200 He's mad, angels get sad and try to apologize, God isn't hearing it, angels get sad, God sends in a few archangels to fix everything by killing/destroying/imprisoning all the problems. Then Enoch has a vision where he travels the universe in the company of four archangels.

El Shaddai takes a slightly different spin on it: Enoch is sent from Heaven to kick the poo poo out of the 7 (rather than 200) deserters using divine superweapons until they're so weak that he can slap some divine chains around them and haul them off to angel jail. The course of this will lead Enoch through unreal landscapes befitting of their angelic creators and pit him against enemies both human and not. The platforming will be largely simple jumping puzzles and the combat will be as simple as the player wants with an emphasis on finding the "flow" of the battle.

I'll be showing off and explaining everything I possibly can. The game is pretty light on plot, but there are a few surprises that should be experienced blind, so let's not have any spoilers. Please do feel free to discuss the Book of Enoch and other, relevant bits of Biblical Apocrypha, so long as nothing gets spoiled by doing so. Also, let's keep the inflammatory remarks about religion in general at completely nonexistant. We're already playing a game where divine envoys wear designer jeans and angels use cell phones. Let's just enjoy the ride.

Episode 1 - These Jeans Are Simply Divine

----------------------------------------------
The following post would detail the meaning of "El Shaddai" and "Metatron", give a bit more info about Enoch, and be the actual "this post contains the episode" post.

Besides that, there's a save point 25 minutes in where I can cut the video, so that's no problem. I'll boost my own audio and drop the game's a bit more so I'm easier to hear, and add a tiny outro. Anything else?

Analysis of Boatmurdered

I would be thoroughly interested in reading this kind of thing, but I feel like in order for it to stand on its own and not just be a summary or a "Go read Boatmurdered" thread it should have a significant amount of content you can't get by reading the thread. For instance, the part where you went into when Boatmurdered started and how both the Forums and the concept of Let's Plays were different at the time was great. It would be good to see more information like that.

Also Dwarf Fortress has changed quite a bit to be sure, and details of the game might want to be something you go into more. Consider that you'll have 3 groups of viewers - people who played Dwarf Fortress back then people who have played Dwarf Fortress but not that version, and people who have never played Dwarf Fortress at all (those poor souls). Therefore information about Dwarf Fortress back then and how it has changed would be new to a good portion of your audience, and likely nostalgic for others.

When it comes to Boatmurdered itself are you going to focus on the thread or the fortress itself? Either way it seems like you could include a lot more information. What was the response to the thread initially like, etc? Analyzing the fort itself seems like a neat idea, and having played Dwarf Fortress I'd be really interested in hearing what you have to say. But rather than just giving it a grade it would be good to go into detail about what was done and the consequences of it, then what could have been done differently and how things might have turned out differently if they were.

I like the idea for this thread but it just doesn't seem like there's going to be much to it. Other people might be more amiable towards the idea if you had an OP post that clearly laid out what your intent was and the content you were going to cover before you jumped right in. In any case, I hope you do figure something out.

This is a much better introduction to the game than the raw video, so good job there. Also good to see you preemptively cutting off issues that could show up, though you'll probably still have to be on top of things in the thread.

Because you mentioned the rating the game got in the OP, something it would be interesting to hear during the LP is your thoughts on the game and whether you agree or disagree with the general consensus and why.

As for the length: it would be a good idea to split the video, however the 45 minute one you have now is pretty much all introduction and there's not much you can do about that. I can understand why people would think getting two updates of introductory material would be boring. I think your best bet might be to split the video but post the two parts together in one update, or in the very least post the second one quickly. Unfortunately this game has a slow start but hopefully it will pick up after you pass the initial hurdle.

You shouldn't be posting spoilers when the OP says no spoilers. You get whatever the mods hand out.

There's nobody out there going "Well, if I only get probated for 3 days, I'm gonna post some spoilers, but if it's for an entire week I won't!"

Bingo. I mentioned it more for everyone else who doesn't post spoilers so they know that we are getting more aggressive about it.

Sod those that do.

I'm still not convinced that making a whole new thread for examining old LPs is appropriate. Still, I'll repost what I wrote in order to get general feedback.
I could kinda see this working, but I think it'd have to be a group thread, open anyone reviewing old LPs as long as the reviews are high-effort enough.

I already have an LP going, but this is just an idea I have rolling about in my head. It's not a good idea and I will probably not start it up for a while. But, I am willing to endure going through this game again int he name of good entertainment:

I don't hate this game. I'd almost say that I like it, but going through these encounters starts to wear down your sanity.

I just want some tips and comments about how to improve it, in particular what should I do about NPC mugshots? Or should I just screencap the conversations?

I'd recommend maybe using the sprites for anyone without a portrait (if really necessary), and using the actual portrait for everyone fortunate enough to get one. From what little of this game I unfortunately remember, there's a lot of stupidly long conversations, so having a screen for every line of dialogue would get pretty annoying/awkward quite quickly.

Just at a glance I don't like how you opted to screenshot all of the dialogue. When notable stuff happens on the screen it's fine, but when you screen cap two different halves of a two part dialogue box it makes me wonder why you're not just transcribing most of it, and it's kind of a pain to scroll through and read.

EM Wave Change! Let's Play Mega Man Star Force, On The Air!

Also Known As: Ryuusei no Rockman (JP)
Released in Japan: December 14th, 2006
Released in North America: August 7th, 2007
(Dragon version sold exclusively at GameStop & EB Games)
Released in Europe: November 30th, 2007

Mega Man Star Force is the first game in the Star Force series, the direct successor to the Mega Man Battle Network series. Set 200 years after the end of Battle Network 6, society has moved away from having everything related to civilization being tied to the internet, and instead having everything be tied to electromagnetic waves. To the point where in Star Force 2, it's revealed that dinosaurs and ninjas in feudal Japan had access to EM wave technology. But that's Star Force 2, we're here to talk about Star Force 1.

Star Force 1 stars Geo Stelar, a 10-year-old kid, and his EM wave alien buddy, Omega-Xis, nickname "Mega". 3 years before the start of the game, Geo's father, an astronaut named Kelvin Stelar, disappeared when the space station he was on vanished while trying to make contact with an alien planet inhabited by EM beings. The game begins on the third anniversary of Kelvin's disappearance.

Star Force 1 is markedly different from the Battle Network games in that it has... character development! Yes, the main characters are no longer 1-dimensional personalities, they actually grow as the story progresses; in particular, Geo goes through very heavy changes regarding his outlook on life throughout the story. I don't want to give away too much, but most of the conflicts in the game are caused by aliens preying on the personal insecurities or crises of characters. It's kind of sad that all of this gets completely thrown out the window in 2 and is brought back severely gimped in 3, but oh well.

The general consensus on Star Force seems to be that they're okay games, but not as good as the Battle Network games due to their heavy simplification of the battle system; for example, what Battle Cards/Chips you can select per turn is no longer dependent on alphabetical codes attached to Chips, but rather their position on the Custom Screen, which makes Folder building as simple as making sure you have 2 or more of the same Card. I personally don't mind the simplifications too much, but combat is less involved than it was in Battle Network.

So how'll you be handling this LP?
I plan to do a 100% run, which amounts to getting all six title screen icons and showing off all the postgame content... what little there is that isn't repeatedly grinding for Cards or a SP form of a boss. Most of the LP will be screenshots, but boss battles will be in video. I'll also be playing Dragon version, because that's the version I own on a physical DS cart. There's very little difference between each version besides the colors of the menus, a few Battle Cards, and a boss.

What about the BrotherBand system?
I can't really show if off. To cut a long story short, Desmume emulates Ad-Hoc to a certain extent... that extent being it can get a connection going but after a very short amount of time the connection will drop. WFC stuff is completely disabled. I'll see what I can do about getting content using my actual physical copy, but at the moment I'll skip the BrotherBand stuff.

Do I need prior knowledge of the Battle Network games to understand Star Force?
There's one sidequest in Star Force 1 activated by putting any Battle Network game in the GBA slot of the DS, which involves one Battle Network character, but aside from that, nope. Familiarity with how the BN games worked, though, may help you understand what's going on in battles. If you want to get a primer on the Battle Network games, I recommend Epee Em's LP of BN 2-6 (do note though that the LP Archive only has 4-6 because 2 and 3 lost images because of WaffleImages. If you have Archives, though, 2 and 3 are prefectly readable) and MissEchelon's excellent ongoing LP of Battle Network 2.

One more thing:
:siren: No spoilers, please! :siren:
Because Star Force puts actual effort into its plot and conflicts, at least compared to the Battle Network games, I'd like to keep spoilers to a minimum; this includes gameplay spoilers.

Redux OP and second prototype first update.

The content for both is largely the same, but I made some changes based on the feedback I got on my first attempt. Namely, going a little more into detail about how the thread will work in the OP, and eliminating some commentary in the first update.

The most important change, of course, is the image quality. It was rightfully the biggest criticism of my first attempt, so improving that was paramount. I have a vastly superior setup now, and it's obvious just by looking at this the limitations of my first attempt. I'm not entirely sure what happened with the second and last images, but I'll make sure to fix them should this be deemed thread-worthy. Also forgot to add italics to a few lines, but nothing that can't be corrected later on.
