Just picked up a bunch of stuff. I got an unofficial release of The Smiths - Meat is Murder on splattered purple vinyl, as well as Melvins - Gluey Porch Treatments which is also some kind of unofficial release from Alchemy Records. The Smiths vinyl is definitely the coolest looking record I own along with Merzbow - Minazo Volume 2. The most interesting thing I purchased, in my opinion, would have to be Tim the Mute - Anything You Want. I personally know Tim as he works at the record store I frequent, and I can easily say he's a super awesome dude. I spend a lot of time just hanging out in the store with Tim, listening to new arrivals, and chatting, after I've made my purchases for the week. I can't really think of any other way to describe his music other than it's a blend of minimal electronic stuff, acoustic guitar, and very distinct, quirky vocals.

Here's a couple links for anyone interested in Tim: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJhvCaPaMe8 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRiAax5AB1E

HNNNNNGG!!
First US stereo pressing, both LPs look like they've never been played. :hellyeah:

Edit: This is the most expensive record I've yet purchased, at $95, with the second priciest being the 2317 034 2nd UK pressing of We're Only In It For The Money, at $50. Only ~89 more Zappa albums to go and my collection will be complete!

I also picked up Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells for $2 at a thrift store yesterday.

BUT MY LIVELIHOOD DEPENDS ON THE FORUMS!

nomapple posted:

Looking at the P-J III on Amazon, prices vary wildly from £329-£239. So far as I can tell the price difference seems to be based on colour for some reason, but if anyone knows of any differences concerning the quality of the Project Debut IIIs listed, then please, pipe up!

I really like the Debut. Soundwise, I'd say both tables are pretty close but I think the Debut is just a gorgeous piece of kit. It's this vibrant minimalist slab of color (or white or whatever) that draws attention to itself and adds to the decor of the space it's in. I mean, I think most turntables look pretty cool and I'm not one to hide A/V equipment if it's aesthetically well-designed, but that table's practically a piece of furniture.

Also, the Debut-III has just been replaced by the new Debut Carbon. It's the same table except apparently better in every way that counts: Carbon fiber tonearm (probably more of a gimmick than anything, but hey- improvement's improvement), Ortofon 2M Red cartridge (this is a biggie- people often upgrade their Debut-III's by replacing the bundled cartridge. AFAIK this is the one that most people replace it with. It's $100 on its own- so unless you find a clearance Debut-III for at least $100 less than the Carbon, I'd argue that this upgrade alone is worth the cost of the new model), bigger platter, and new motor suspension (from what I've heard, these last two changes basically take care of most of the complaints people had with the older model).

Its standard price is the same as what the Debut-III's was, so if you see different prices around the internet for "ProJect Debut," it might be resellers clearing out old stock. The company's policy is that all of the different colors cost the same, so there shouldn't be any pricing variation based on color. The standard price for the Carbon is $399 (252 pounds). Anything higher (like $329 pounds!?) and you're either getting fleeced or you're seeing a different table- maybe an RPM or an Xpression or a debut with USB.

As far as price and ordering is concerned, I'd order from Jerry Raskin's Needle Doctor before anywhere else. Their pricing on everything is basically the company standard or less and whatever they might lose in price (not much) compared to some other shop, they more than make up for in shipping care and customer service. They're an analog/audiophile supply shop and I'd much rather have my expensive product come from them than some no-name wholesaler on Amazon, if only because they'll probably be much easier to deal with if something arrives broken and I know somebody competent would help me out with any setup questions I might have.

I don't know how many copies were pressed on clear vinyl, but I know it's been pretty hard to find :argh:

Still hanging out for a clear pressing of My Arms, Your Hearse more than anything, though.

My copy from their store cost $18 shipped, so hopefully it's not THAT much of a ripoff. The album owns hard enough to justify the price IMO.

I would check out Bop Street Records (even though it's a bit on the pricy end and mostly used) simply because it's huge, and nearby is Sonic Boom (which is tiny but usually has some cool stuff). Silver Platters is pretty decent and has a good amount of both new and used.

Reich owns SO hard. Try to seek out a copy of Music For 18 Musicians if you can; there are people who will tell you that the side-flip ruins the flow of the piece but those people are incandescently wrong.

And avant-garde vinyl is a dangerous, dangerous rabbithole to fall into; pretty much half my paycheck goes to Experimedia at this point.

So I've been getting into Sun Kil Moon as of late (and late as poo poo to the party, as usual) so I figured I'd check and see if Ghosts of the Great Highway was still in print on vinyl. Unfortunately, it was released on Cameron Crowe's rich man's vanity project record label several years back, is long out of print like the rest of his label's releases, and averages around $200 on eBay. Rich man's vanity record label is right. I got into Sun Kil Moon couple of years ago and got my hands on Ghosts Of... for 40 bucks (each. Black and Marbled one) and got the rest on release. Trying to get them for a reasonable price now is hard as hell. Still can't get Admiral Fell Promises for a decent price.

About $200 :saddowns: I guess it's not too bad. Discogs has had a few for less than that but according to popsike most seem to go for upwards of $250.

I would never pay this much for any other band. All my really expensive purchases have been Porcupine Tree (In Absentia marbled vinyl, The Incident set with book, Moonloop on clear vinyl, Stupid Dream and pretty much all their limited edition CDs) and I only have a few more to go before I have all the ones I want. Deadwing and Fear of a Blank Planet are going to be the biggest roadblocks, and I am also eyeing off the 4x10" Insurgentes set (god drat why do I have to love the most expensive band possible)
