I've always loved Last Man Standing (the Bruce Willis version), but the only version on Blu-Ray comes in a two-pack with The Last Boy Scout, for no other reason I can discern except that both of their titles start with the word "Last". Is it a lovely transfer, worth waiting for a standalone release, or what?

I've never heard of Last Man Standing, but it sounds great, and I could do with a Blu copy of Last Boy Scout. Just need to decide if it's worth having that awful box art in my collection. Maybe a nicer Uk release will come? Edit: Also, if the back cover is to be believed, the fact that both films have the word Last in them and Brucie is literally the only reason these movies have to be together

Does anyone else have a color problem with their 2001 blu? All of the space scenes have a yellow tint to the edges for me. I don't think it's a problem with my settings. I've recently watched space films (Star Wars, For All Mankind) and they look fine.

Oh yeah, I forgot, the other reason why I like throwing Road Warrior out there is that in the end the main character ends up feeling screwed over while the civilians get away to their happy ending. Road Warrior managed that one important thing better than even the direct remake Magnificent Seven did. Sometimes it will be because the different special effects elements were shot differently, and sometimes it will be one element with different tint around the edges which I think was chromatic aberration from weird extra-wide lenses that Kubrick was experimenting with at the time (if anyone has more info on this feel free to chime in) I mean, look at this insanity:  edit: you'll also note that in several shots, it's dim around the edges as well. To be honest, I hope they don't color correct 2001. The weird tint has been there so long it's kinda inseparable from the film, and I think it's a piece of film history, a record of what the state of special effects and cinematography was in 1967.

I've seen it a few times when the color was kind of washed out due to print deterioration and the like- even on the big screen once- and that makes it even more sterile and a bit dull in places (like the whole end hotel scene.) Whereas if you see it the "right" way and they've taken care to get the picture right, it has a much richer look and feel- it's supposed to be kind of cold, at least that's the popular reading, but it's also meant to be stirring and gorgeous. And the end is enhanced by that quite a bit- you look close and see that the lighting in the hotel is slightly off, it's not natural, like the aliens or whatever think this is what a human habitat should be but they didn't quite get it right. Sometimes it doesn't matter too much if a film's transfer is off, but for some movies it's really important.

Hey, Blu-ray Megathread. Maybe only tangentially related, but what sort of storage do you use to house your collections? I've run out of space on my old DVD shelf setup, and I'd really like to replace it with a rather substantial bookcase (so, something like 5' wide and 6' tall with plenty of shelves). I know I've seen examples shown here from time to time (doctor thodt's specifically, I think), but can't find any through search. Ikea surprisingly has a very limited selection.

I highly recommend buying the wood and building a shelving unit yourself. That way you can design it to fit perfectly in the available space. It's usually cheaper than getting something at the store (which won't fit your space perfectly), and shelves are a simple enough design that you don't have to be a great carpenter to make a functional one. Another cool advantage is that your home-made shelf will be a zillion times lighter than an Ikea shelf, so if you ever have to move it you won't give yourself a hernia.

Not sure exactly how large your collection is, but I personally had my shelf bought as a gift which was shipped from BC in Canada. This looks to be it right here. I'm already running out of space on this thing... I think I need to sell some DVDs. Also, there's a separate thread for shelf porn that maybe this question could be better answered there. Ultimately I agree with Hibernator as I wouldn't have spent that money on myself for a shelf like that, let alone all the other reasons listed. Unless money isn't an issue, building your own seems like the way to go.

I switched to these last year They are sturdy and have leveling legs so they won't tip (still a good idea to anchor them). The only way I would move away from them is if I could get something made of solid wood with the same capacity. I would never go back to the crappy pressed wood/particle board.

You know, I wish more Blu-Ray manufacturers would realize that just because someone has an HDTV and player doesn't mean they have a 5.1+ sound system. Those things can be expensive and it sucks to have a big action scene sound weirdly quiet because they're assuming the presence of a subwoofer.

Instead of putting trinkets and digital copies, the gift set has a substantial hardcover book (86 pages) and the original score on CD. It looks like all the extras from the previous 2-disc sets are intact, with the 1962 documentaries remastered, plus a new interview with Peter O'Toole and a deleted scene that was part of the original premiere cut. It also has a real 70mm frame, even if it's sort of a trinket. The book probably has a reprint of the roadshow booklet considering a mini version was provided with the very first DVD edition.
