This leaked out early before it's official release. Scanning through it, it looks like it's worth the $12.99 price. Image Entertainment didn't do much clean up. There's spots and blips of damage all over the place but it still seems to be a clear upgrade from the DVD.

Also, the color scheme seems to be different. It's not as cold as the DVD release.

(Keep in mind that the screenshots are from compressed sources, not the actual discs. The DVD one isn't mine so it could be wrong and I had to crop it a bit when I blew it up to 1080p)

Yeah, great at getting us into Wawa.
I've always loved Last Man Standing (the Bruce Willis version), but the only version on Blu-Ray comes in a two-pack with The Last Boy Scout, for no other reason I can discern except that both of their titles start with the word "Last". Is it a lovely transfer, worth waiting for a standalone release, or what?

I've never heard of Last Man Standing, but it sounds great, and I could do with a Blu copy of Last Boy Scout. Just need to decide if it's worth having that awful box art in my collection. Maybe a nicer Uk release will come?

Edit: Also, if the back cover is to be believed, the fact that both films have the word Last in them and Brucie is literally the only reason these movies have to be together

Does anyone else have a color problem with their 2001 blu? All of the space scenes have a yellow tint to the edges for me. I don't think it's a problem with my settings. I've recently watched space films (Star Wars, For All Mankind) and they look fine.

Arguably, any movie that involves "hey, I need to put together a motley crew to pull off an impossible mission" can trace its roots back to Seven Samurai. This makes it too broad to make a list cause then you'd have Ocean's Eleven, Guns of the Navaronne, etc.

I just like throwing Road Warrior out there because there was a village involved, and the final battle involved seven good guys against an entire army of bandits.

That's fair. I think I always pegged it as "downtrodden people under the heel of a villain beg band of heroes for help". The Three Amigos, Bug's Life, etc. all seem to be pretty solid homages. 13 Assassins is pretty close, too.

Oh yeah, I forgot, the other reason why I like throwing Road Warrior out there is that in the end the main character ends up feeling screwed over while the civilians get away to their happy ending.

Road Warrior managed that one important thing better than even the direct remake Magnificent Seven did. Magnificent Seven ended with "welp, a bunch of people died and us farmers won but not you cowboys, but whatever"

That's just how it was shot. Space seems "warm" in 2001, shots alternate between being tinted yellow to magenta and sometimes even green. The moon is all three in different shots.

You might even notice that in the same shot there is more than one tint. Sometimes it will be because the different special effects elements were shot differently, and sometimes it will be one element with different tint around the edges which I think was chromatic aberration from weird extra-wide lenses that Kubrick was experimenting with at the time (if anyone has more info on this feel free to chime in)

I mean, look at this insanity:

edit: you'll also note that in several shots, it's dim around the edges as well. For example, the Dawn of Man scenes are dim around the edges, and so is when Frank is jogging around the Discovery.

For anyone who already bought a lot of the Bond movies and don't want to plunk down on Bond 50 just to get the remainders, the remaining films have been divvied up between retailers to be exclusives on October 2. Here's the breakdown.

Target: A View To a Kill, The Living Daylights, Tomorrow Never Dies
Best Buy: On Her Majesty's Secret Service, You Only Live Twice, The Spy Who Loved Me

To be honest, I hope they don't color correct 2001. The weird tint has been there so long it's kinda inseparable from the film, and I think it's a piece of film history, a record of what the state of special effects and cinematography was in 1967.

Hey, isn't a View to a Kill worth it just for the Duran Duran track? I'd gladly pay 30 bucks to have that song in HD quality. It's also the one with Christopher Walken, so it's actually a fair amount of fun.

2001 is one of those movies where the color timing stuff is kind of important to the film's effect. I've seen it a few times when the color was kind of washed out due to print deterioration and the like- even on the big screen once- and that makes it even more sterile and a bit dull in places (like the whole end hotel scene.) Whereas if you see it the "right" way and they've taken care to get the picture right, it has a much richer look and feel- it's supposed to be kind of cold, at least that's the popular reading, but it's also meant to be stirring and gorgeous. And the end is enhanced by that quite a bit- you look close and see that the lighting in the hotel is slightly off, it's not natural, like the aliens or whatever think this is what a human habitat should be but they didn't quite get it right.

Sometimes it doesn't matter too much if a film's transfer is off, but for some movies it's really important.

Nah, see, that's the rationale I used when I saw it on DVD a while back. "Hey, it has the Duran Duran song, and Christopher Walken, and Grace Jones! How bad can this be?", and it ends up being a completely miserable waste of time.

But we're talking Master Quality Duran Duran!

Yeah, it's not working for me either. There are quite a few Bond movies that are only worth it for the theme song. And then there's Die Another Day, which doesn't even have a good theme song.

Even though it's bad I'll always have a soft spot for it since it was the first Bond movie I ever rented. Octopussy is the same, being my actual first, my dad kept me up to see it on TBS when I was six or seven and it got me into Bond.

Hey, Blu-ray Megathread. Maybe only tangentially related, but what sort of storage do you use to house your collections? I've run out of space on my old DVD shelf setup, and I'd really like to replace it with a rather substantial bookcase (so, something like 5' wide and 6' tall with plenty of shelves). I know I've seen examples shown here from time to time (doctor thodt's specifically, I think), but can't find any through search. Ikea surprisingly has a very limited selection.

Hibernator

I highly recommend buying the wood and building a shelving unit yourself. That way you can design it to fit perfectly in the available space. It's usually cheaper than getting something at the store (which won't fit your space perfectly), and shelves are a simple enough design that you don't have to be a great carpenter to make a functional one. Another cool advantage is that your home-made shelf will be a zillion times lighter than an Ikea shelf, so if you ever have to move it you won't give yourself a hernia.

Not sure exactly how large your collection is, but I personally had my shelf bought as a gift which was shipped from BC in Canada. This looks to be it right here. I'm already running out of space on this thing... I think I need to sell some DVDs.

Also, there's a separate thread for shelf porn that maybe this question could be better answered there. Ultimately I agree with Hibernator as I wouldn't have spent that money on myself for a shelf like that, let alone all the other reasons listed. Unless money isn't an issue, building your own seems like the way to go.

I switched to these last year They are sturdy and have leveling legs so they won't tip (still a good idea to anchor them). The only way I would move away from them is if I could get something made of solid wood with the same capacity. I would never go back to the crappy pressed wood/particle board.

You know, I wish more Blu-Ray manufacturers would realize that just because someone has an HDTV and player doesn't mean they have a 5.1+ sound system. Those things can be expensive and it sucks to have a big action scene sound weirdly quiet because they're assuming the presence of a subwoofer.

This is one case where the big box is actually worth it. Instead of putting trinkets and digital copies, the gift set has a substantial hardcover book (86 pages) and the original score on CD. It looks like all the extras from the previous 2-disc sets are intact, with the 1962 documentaries remastered, plus a new interview with Peter O'Toole and a deleted scene that was part of the original premiere cut. It also has a real 70mm frame, even if it's sort of a trinket.

The book probably has a reprint of the roadshow booklet considering a mini version was provided with the very first DVD edition.
