This one's for you ExecuDork! So I bought an AE1 from these very forums and took it over to Bali. Sadly I'm nowhere near good enough to be trusted with a camera that doesn't have three different meters to tell me when I'm loving up so there wasn't anything really worth showing off. And I can't get my 8800f to play nice enough to scan the negs, so print-scans it is. I've cherry picked a few to kind of convey what Bali is like. Tomorrow I might post some more. Firstly this is how I felt for most of the trip, I was deaf in one ear for almost the entire trip too. White boy weak. Why I like Bali: Bali is part of Indonesia, which is primarily Muslim, however Bali is a primarily Hindu area. Everywhere you go is little aspects of that culture, every house has a little place for incense, we drove past gated courtyards housing paper mache gods being built for festivals. These little offerings are everywhere and you have to watch your feet lest you step on one. Our canoeing instructor quietly built and prayed over one before we left lest the river swallow us whole. Why I dislike Bali I'm Australian, I'm proud of that, my earliest memories are of beach, gumtrees and grass burn offs, lessons on how to deal with deadly poisonous spiders and herbivores that can kick your lungs through your chest are deeply ingrained in my psyche. I love my country dearly but I am not an "Aussie". Bali is a place for "Aussies" to go get drunk on the cheap, get messy as gently caress and frankly act like jackasses. It caters, unerringly, to the lowest common denominator, the people I was with, lovely and accommodating as they were, were going to Bali for that reason, so I never really got the chance to go see Indonesia as anything other than a vast tourist trap. Some details: Bali runs off scooters, insofar as I'm aware you don't need a licence to rent one, so 80% of the vehicles are tiny motorcycles and Vespa knock offs. Petrol is sold in bottles, I think I saw one building even vaguely resembling a 'real' petrol station while I was over there and it looked abandoned. The only image I was really happy with. This, to me is a more honest portrayal of Bali, a nook backed behind the pool room at our glittering 3.5 star hotel. Bingtang byproducts and grime, the necessary tools for maintaining the faux-luxury lower-middle class white people crave. I should point out that when we rocked up the hotel had Rodney Rude playing at full bore over the pool sound system. I like the light. All in all it wasn't a bad trip, I had fun at certain intervals, but as one of those white guilt bearing pricks I felt immensely guilty of not being able to invest more time in learning about Indonesia and Bali as places rather than as tools to get drunk for less than $5AUD a drink.
