It's even better than this. Claudio Castiglioni was, if nothing else, a wheeler dealer the likes of which will never be seen again. In 2004 he sold a 58 percent stake in MV Agusta (along with the Husqvarna and Cagiva brands) to Proton for 70 million Euro, only to buy it back for 1 Euro in 2005 (along with 107 million Euros of debt that MV had incurred). Husqvarna was then sold off to BMW for a cool 93 million Euros. Then in 2008, Harley acquired 100 percent of MV (and Cagiva) for 70 million Euros out of which 45 million Euros was debt payments. And finally in 2010 MV was back with Castiglioni, debt free and with millions invested in new tooling and machinery. Rumors from Italy have it that Castiglioni again got it for that one (1) symbolic Euro.

So unless I hosed my maths up the Castiglionis wound up 126mil Euros up?

I picture that guy doing nothing but wearing sunglasses, hanging out at casinos, and occasionally talking on his cell with random CEOs to trade something for another few million for the last 20 years. With "like a boss" written in front of him in Italian.

Any opinions on this bike? pic1 pic2. Seller's asking $5k, I offered $4500, he countered with $4750 yadda yadda.

2006 883R, 11k miles (seller has records for factory maint. schedule at dealer)
Parked in garage/single owner/no accidents
"Jet airflow" added, V&H pipes, forward controls.

It's about $500 over what I was wanting to spend, but since I'm a tall dude I was planning on installing forward controls on whatever Sporty I got anyway. I am not a fan of lots of chrome, so the style hits all the right places. What about this "jet airflow"? I'm a newb, but this appears to essentially be a modified carb kit.

Thanks gents :tipshat:

Prices vary by location, but in this area (Carolinas) that is too much for a 6 year old 883. There are several 1200s in the 2004-2006 range with lower mileage for the same price. Even if it is immaculate etc, I would be looking to pay 3500 range.

poo poo, nearly all the Sportsters near me (Los Angeles) for that price are 1980s/90s. There's one 2003 in bumfuck nowhere that's chromed all to poo poo with "a clutch that does not work well".

I found one 2007 a couple weeks ago w/low miles for $3800, but by the time I got off work it had sold. The seller was a very nice lady, but obviously was selling off ex-hubby or recently bootcamped/convicted son's bike. That was by far the lowest price I've seen for anything worth looking at, and it was a fluke. I tried to talk this guy down to $4000, but he wouldn't go below $4300.

I know I could be patient and wait for another fluke but my M1 is burning a hole in my pocket. :f5:

It's not a great deal but not a complete rip off. I'd stick to your 4500 and let him think about it.

The jet kit might just mean they changed out the carb jets which they call "paying the taxes" Harley ships the bikes to meet EPA and they're basically choked down on fuel and air. You get more performance when you change the jets/air cleaner.

it's a nice looking bike. The bars are aftermarket as well.

Someone got you a obnoxiously racist av.
Harleys tend to rot on Craigslist forever at absurd prices, far more so than other brands. Some sellers see these other guys with their bikes up for months and assume it's the market price. It's obviously not, if the bikes aren't selling. A brand new 883 is 8k list (subtract for negotiation, add back for delivery fees/taxes/etc), whereas that 883R is seven years old. H-D for whatever logic doesn't sell 883's with twin front brakes any more, which is nice for the 883R, but by Harley standards the paint and wheels are bargain and not worth as much as fancier options.

I think those bars are stock (they were for later years at least) but drag bars and forward controls are going to be an odd mix for a C-shaped riding position. Make sure to sit on it and ideally give it a good test ride, keeping in mind bars can be swapped. The pipes look nice but might be excessively loud.

It's been ~55 degrees today and yesterday mornings. My ironhead will not turn over with the electric start and has no kick (it's a 78), however, later in the day, it turns over flawlessly. Is my battery hosed or something? I just charged it about a week ago (wiring on this bike is absolute poo poo. Someone did a DIY and it's a piss poor job). I'm contemplating taking it over to one of the harley shops this weekend and dropping a new one in.

Start with the cheap & easy things first. Check the electrolyte level in the battery first, if it's low add distilled water until it's to the full marker and charge overnight.

Technically, there isn't one. I just put a Mikuni VM38 on it. However, the enrichener is now labeled "choke." Fires up perfectly when the bike is room temp. The bike acts like the battery is dead and the starter clicks when the bike is even at 55 degrees, but when it's warmer it fires right up.

Imagine having to brake hard, or make a sudden movement, or ride for further than 10 miles/minutes, imagine how bad your hands would fall asleep and get cold even in like 90 degree weather.

So I bought it :toot::toot::toot::toot::toot:

Went over to check it out, talked with the owner a bit (really cool guy) and we settled on $4600. I queried why he had to sell and he got a little embarrassed and said his elderly parents kept begging him to give up motorcycling :shobon: He was not happy to hand over the keys and muttered "I'll get another later in life..."

I just got back from my first ride around the neighborhood and I can't stop grinning like a moron. I started out in a huge business complex parking lot, expecting to stall a bunch and generally suck since it's been about 4 weeks since my MSF... what do you know, it's much easier to take off smoothly on a motorcycle with a little power! No stalls so I did some slaloms and braking and took it out on the street.

Snowdens Secret posted:

The combo feels great for my frame; the controls allow my legs to sit at nearly the same angle I like them in my car, and the drag bars are perfect. The more classic/inward-angled bars on my MSF bike made me bend my wrists too much and it ached after awhile.

Heh.... This is the reaction I expect. Lots of folks bitch about loud Harleys until they ride/own one, then its different.

Anyway, congrats on the bike... let the transformation begin! It is the rare owner who doesn't take advantage of the HUGE aftermarket to start customizing the bike. If you keep it, you will probably go through 3 or 4 generations of style until you hit the one you like enough to keep.

Since we are talking pipes...

I got a PTF (Patriot Top Fueler) EFI programmer, K&N and some mini-cans for my XR, installed them on Monday. The cans are a little louder than I wanted and I am going to close off the baffles a little. The PTF did a fantastic job getting rid of the lean condition, the stumble at idle and waking the bike up in the lower RPMs. I probably sacrificed some top end, but since the only times I was hitting the red line were by design, not need, I don't think I care.
