Yeah, you wouldn't be using that access to stream (likely why they added the 32gb of local storage) but that would cover almost all "normal" access and make features like X-Ray work while watching a locally stored movie.

Also, I wonder if it's LTE only or has a 3G fall back. I'm going to go with LTE only and that's why they managed to score a deal. The LTE networks are less congested.

Maybe, but watch one movie on LTE and you're probably at your limit for the month.

I'd be shocked if there wasn't an option to buy an extra gig of data for 15-20 bucks in a month. Gives a solid backbone for casual email checkers at an extremely reasonable price.

Amazon is really giving this a hell of an effort.

You wouldn't be able to watch even one movie and I'm betting that the software doesn't let you stream movies like that over the LTE connection.

The LTE connection is simply there to make all the extra features work when you aren't on wifi (like whispersync and X-ray.)

This is probably the right answer. It makes all those background features continue to function, and gives you the added ability to do some minimal surfing and email checking for the low price of $50/year to stay connected.

More like the impracticality for his/her use case and extrapolating it to everybody. 250MB/mo is more than fine for text/web only.

250MB/mo for $50 is a steal compared to today's pricing. I'm guessing if you need more than that you have to pick a standard AT&T tablet plan.

Apple charges $130 for a wireless radio in their ipads, as well as $100 for 16GB of flash storage. Add in the clearly subsidized data, and you're going to be the only one holding your opinion.

The difference between an ipad 16G and an ipad 32G LTE is $220, and you still have to pay $15/mo for 250MB.

Civil posted:

I'm guessing it'll have to be VZW since ATT's 4G coverage is laughable at this point and Sprint virtually nonexistent.

Also to keep the $50 fee in perspective, the value proposition isn't quite as clear cut as it seems. Under the current Verizon Share Everything plan, it only costs $10/month extra to add a tablet to your bill, which is $120/year. Granted that tablet will be using bandwidth out of your total pool, but if you already subscribe to one of the higher data plans then it might not matter. So the real differential is $60/year + whatever additional data you may have to pay for.

I believe studies have shown that most people do not use anywhere near their entire monthly limit, so for them there's no additional data cost. The extra $60/year gives you the opportunity to use beyond 250mb at no extra cost (assuming there's enough left in the shared data pool), and depending on the overage charge for the Kindle, it might actually save you money if you're a power user.

However I suspect that for the majority of consumers the Kindle's $50/year is still a much better value. What it'll really come down to is if the tablet itself is good quality (for the price) and easy to use. On paper it looks fantastic, I'd admit.

You aren't kidding! Wow I hope ATT ramps up their LTE expansion soon. Their website claims coverage of 74mm Americans, which is ~20-25% penetration rate (although personally I don't know how much I trust those coverage maps). Many major cities are still missing as well, even if you account for the very recently announced new/planned markets.

In that case I hope there's 3G as a backup option, because otherwise I feel many people will be rather disappointed.

edit: the value comparison remains the same - since AT&T/Verizon follow very similar cost structure. However this doesn't apply to non-ATT/Verizon folks.

There's a lot of anti-Kindle Touch stuff in the last couple of pages, but as a KT owner I have to say I haven't minded the touchscreen one bit. It makes holding the thing a lot more flexible, because all you have to do to turn the page is be able to touch even the corner. I hardly have any accidental turns from blankets or anything like that, and my screen never really shows much in the way of fingerprints. Having both the touchscreen and the buttons would be great, but the missing buttons really shouldn't be the dealbreaker that some people are making them out to be.

Yeah you don't actually have to swipe to turn the page...you can just tap anywhere on the right to move a page forward, and left to move a page back.

Fair enough on the accidental turns, but if you have to stand in direct sunlight and slowly turn the Kindle until you figure out at what angle you can finally see a fingerprint, I don't think it really counts. The matte screen really doesn't show anything unless you've been sneezing directly onto it.

Of course this is SA, where there are semi-regular references to people having to use a razorblade to scrape hand gunk out of the crevices in their game console controllers, so maybe people are right to be worried about the sanctity of any screen they have to physically touch.
