Looks like the $200 Kindle Fire HD 7" gets you an extra 8GB of storage, rear camera, OMAP4470 vs Tegra3, and buy-in to Amazon's ecosystem compared to a $200 Nexus 7. I'll keep my Nexus.

If you have to replace a broken device, you sign in and everything is back where it was. Also, a phone is sure as poo poo going to be coming after today. Amazon is going for it, all in. I'm not in any way shape or form ready to give up my Google apps and my Google devices, but Google has better really start working on the whole user experience thing because well timed Amazon phone could eat their lunch.

The problem with an Amazon phone is that a lot of Amazon's content isn't exactly suited to one. And unlike with tablets, Google's been doing just fine with phones. Edit: have we confirmed that this thing has some goddamn volume buttons this time?

My question is, why the gently caress doesn't anyone else have cloud syncing for game progress? App Data locations are standardized, it doesn't even have the excuse Steam Cloud does!

It looks like the new Kindle Fires still don't have volume buttons. That wound up being one of the most annoying aspects of the original Fire for me, and I'm really surprised they've stuck with it considering this is still designed as a media consumption device.

Just noticed that the 8.9in Kindle has a 16:10 aspect ratio. I thought that only existed on some ThinkPads and monitors these days. It seems that 4:3 is often preferred for portrait/web browsing and 16:9 is better for videos, but 16:10?  edit: Oh it looks like quite a few Android tablets use 16:10, weird! Is it just me or is the new Kindle Fire OS literally nothing but a series of carousels? Like, a carousel of books, a carousel of games, etc? All of the tech sites are just showing screenshots of the hardware, almost nothing of the user experience besides the reading app.

Nobody's showing screenshots of the OS itself, they're just showing the reading apps, angry birds, and the hardware. HDMI-out is only supported on Gingerbread, so that has to be what's underneath the Carousel

If I had to guess they're probably using Skyhook WPS (which can apparently get GPS level accuracy just with Wifi) since they're confident enough to list the "android.hardware.location.gps" feature which regular Android reserves for actual GPS hardware.

I'm really interested in the 8.9, and it coming out in November so I have time to save up money for it is great. Now, did they actually go into HD playback on the device? Mostly I'm going to get it to read comics, and probably watch movies on it.

The 8.9 has a higher PPI than the TF700, which seems like it ought to be the best bang for buck for reading comics, both in Amazon and CBR/CBZ varities.

I'd say the worth of the new Kindle Fires is going to rely heavily on how easy they are to root. The tablet market has changed a lot since the first Fire came out and now there's less reason to compromise with Amazon's software and ecosystem than there was last year. With the Nexus 7 already existing and the iPad Mini an almost certainty, a small yet decent tablet on the cheap isn't the novelty it once was.

On the other hand, that still leaves the iPad Mini as a serious competitor, and Amazon's video selection isn't exactly competitive with Netflix or Hulu at this point.
