Looks like the $200 Kindle Fire HD 7" gets you an extra 8GB of storage, rear camera, OMAP4470 vs Tegra3, and buy-in to Amazon's ecosystem compared to a $200 Nexus 7.

I'll keep my Nexus.

But what two Amazon devices are you going to sync that kind of thing between?

They announced 4 tablets and 3 e-readers today. There's no phone, and you aren't running their ecosytem on your laptop/pc. So you're going to save your game progress on one tablet and then keep playing it on another? Or maybe you'll save which page of a glossy magazine you're reading on a tablet and then resume reading it later on a black and white e-reader?

Well, you have that audible sync between devices. You can start listening right where you left off reading. Keep in mind to that the syncing also goes with new devices or resets. In two years when you decide to buy the Kindle Fire HD 3D, all your game progress will show up on a new device.

If you have to replace a broken device, you sign in and everything is back where it was.

Also, a phone is sure as poo poo going to be coming after today. Amazon is going for it, all in.

I'm not in any way shape or form ready to give up my Google apps and my Google devices, but Google has better really start working on the whole user experience thing because well timed Amazon phone could eat their lunch.

HDMI-out and Dolby Stereo speakers too

So if the thing had stock Android, you'd prefer it over a Nexus 7?

Put stock Jelly Bean on a 7" Fire HD and it's pretty much the Nexus 7... but better at the same price point.

The problem with an Amazon phone is that a lot of Amazon's content isn't exactly suited to one. And unlike with tablets, Google's been doing just fine with phones.

Edit: have we confirmed that this thing has some goddamn volume buttons this time? :v:

How does the 8.9" HD compare to the transformer infinity?

My question is, why the gently caress doesn't anyone else have cloud syncing for game progress? App Data locations are standardized, it doesn't even have the excuse Steam Cloud does!

It looks like the new Kindle Fires still don't have volume buttons.

That wound up being one of the most annoying aspects of the original Fire for me, and I'm really surprised they've stuck with it considering this is still designed as a media consumption device.

Just noticed that the 8.9in Kindle has a 16:10 aspect ratio. I thought that only existed on some ThinkPads and monitors these days. It seems that 4:3 is often preferred for portrait/web browsing and 16:9 is better for videos, but 16:10? :psyduck:

edit: Oh it looks like quite a few Android tablets use 16:10, weird! I guess it's for the navigation bar at the bottom.

Is it just me or is the new Kindle Fire OS literally nothing but a series of carousels? Like, a carousel of books, a carousel of games, etc? All of the tech sites are just showing screenshots of the hardware, almost nothing of the user experience besides the reading app.

HDMI-out is only supported on Gingerbread, so that has to be what's underneath the Carousel

It's like they tried to go really minimalist and slick, but instead it just looks kind of lazy. If this is the main user experience, talk about brutal:

Then again, I've always hated this kind of thing, dating back to the first time Apple introduced Cover Flow. It looks neat for like 5 seconds but it's really the worst way to browse libraries of content.

If it works like the original Fire, the carousel is just for recent items and you can pin frequently used apps right below it. Most other things are set up like a bookshelf.

Again, that's assuming it works like the last one.

Nope, going by that table the 2nd gen Fires have Wifi based location services. If I had to guess they're probably using Skyhook WPS (which can apparently get GPS level accuracy just with Wifi) since they're confident enough to list the "android.hardware.location.gps" feature which regular Android reserves for actual GPS hardware.

I'll be honest the ads on the normal Kindle never seemed that obnoxious, and I've actually gotten some decent local deals out of it. I'm cool with ads if it keeps the price down and they're relevant, as opposed to "1 WEIRD TIP TO LOSE YOUR BEER GUT."

Also it's important to note it's really unobtrusive. It just sits there on the lock screen ONLY. And it's typically book related deals. It's not like advertisements for a new flavor of Doritos or something.

Considering what a great little tablet the original Kindle Fire is with Jelly Bean, odds are good that a well written custom ROM will make the new one sing.

There are some talks about its bootloader which may be locked this time, which will put a huge impediment to any custom roms unfortunately. Amazon has good reason to do so too given how much it relies on its proprietary system to actually make money.

A 10.1" screen is over 20% larger in area than an 8.9". The difference in pixel density is pretty small and won't even be noticable until "CMX-HD" versions come to Android (if they ever do). Add to that the fact that the Amazon appstore version of Comixology has a shitload of issues and doesn't even include the same content as the other versions of the app.

I'd go for the Infinity for comics.

e: iPad 3 is also a good choice for comics but 4:3 doesn't match comic book pages nearly as well as 16:10 and it's slightly smaller at 9.7"

I'd say the worth of the new Kindle Fires is going to rely heavily on how easy they are to root. The tablet market has changed a lot since the first Fire came out and now there's less reason to compromise with Amazon's software and ecosystem than there was last year. With the Nexus 7 already existing and the iPad Mini an almost certainty, a small yet decent tablet on the cheap isn't the novelty it once was.

On the one hand you're right, Amazon's video isn't available on the Nexus 7.

On the other hand, that still leaves the iPad Mini as a serious competitor, and Amazon's video selection isn't exactly competitive with Netflix or Hulu at this point.

Paying to unlock reenforces the idea that new Fires won't be as easy to root as the older ones which is a bummer. I've been looking for something in between the 7" & 10" sizes and the 8.9 HD was looking very tempting.
