Heh, sorry.

What other pale ales do you guys like? I prefer them as hoppy as can be with a high alcohol content. I find a lot of the more commercial ones just don't have enough hops in them and are really boring. I think a high alcohol % is key to the flavour of a good IPA. I love the passion fruit finish to the Punk IPA, I think it would be great worked into a cocktail.

I'm in the UK for context.

No need to apologize. Whatever floats your boat. It's just that Brewdog has a rep for doing things just to do them, not necessarily make the best beer. At least that's MY rep for them...

I can't really speak to UK-available stuff though. We're over capacity in the US with high-ABV IPA/DIPAs. I suppose you can probably get your hands on stuff from Mikkeller or Evil Twin. I'd find some of their over-the-top stuff, particularly MikKeller's 1000 IBU. Not the hoppiest thing I've ever had but pretty close.

I didn't realize that Harpoon's White IPA was part of that 100 Barrels series when I had it on tap. I guess it's good that I had a limited edition beer, but it's not balanced like I expected it to be. It was too much IPA and not at all white, and the other two I had were more balanced (Saranac and Lynchpin by Green Flash and Founders). I only realized three-fourths of the way through that I wasn't in the mood for hoppy beer. :(

On the other hand, I did like the Southampton Abbott 12.

So Norway has a huge problem with regards to promoting good beer. Alcohol advertisements are illegal. In an effort to increase awareness of craft brewing, some local guys got asked by food festival arrangers if they wanted to do a beer festival the same weekend.

The result was an awesome turnout and alot of great beers. My favorite was a Lervig/Mikkeller collaboration, a double IPA at a whopping 14% ABV. It was really well balanced and not boozy at all. It's not available for retail but might be due to people going insane over it.

Left hand side. The Rye IPA was also quite nice.

My second favorite was a Nøgne Ø brew, a pilsner brewed with champagne yeast and having a whopping 9.5% ABV. It was closer to champagne than to beer, but quite tasty.

The breweries present were Lervig, Ægir, Kinn, Haandbryggeriet, Hansa (Macrobrewery, had two generic beers on tap, yuck), Nøgne Ø and Balder(New brewery).

I had the original batch and it was okay, but I've heard that subsequent batches were much better. I generally like Pipeworks, but I had their blueberry berlinerweiss and it was terrible - had a bizarre cheesy flavour. Hope they fix it in their next batch.

Found a few of these in the back of a cooler in a local liquor store, and decided to give one a shot.

Made with Anaheim Chile's and Cinnamon, it's definitely one of the most interesting Belgian's I've ever had. Not too sweet, some raisin and banana flavors, a hint of the chili and cinnamon. Hoppier than most Belgians, but being a Stone beer, I wouldn't have expected anything less. Pretty enjoyable, and easy as hell to drink, despite its 9.4% ABV. Nice beer to enjoy while watching some football for sure. I may pick up one more and keep it stashed until after 12/12 as per their recommendation, but I can't imagine another 3 months doing anything special.

To stay topical, I also found a Buffalo Bills Pumpkin ale for 75 cents that I kinda enjoyed!

I'm pretty sure I got some Orange Sherbet at Stone Sourfest this year, but I'll somehow force myself to have some more. Bourbon Barrel Fruit Blend is definitely high on my list, as is Figaro, but I've got a bottle of Sang Noir (and one of Sang Royale) and know people with more, so I may give those a pass to try something else I haven't.

Soizoen Bretta is there I guess because it has brett in it, even if it's not actually sour. It's a drat good beer and will make a nice change between more tart things.

I went to a birthday party last night armed with a six-pack of Uinta Baba, two four-packs of Shift, and an Otiose for the birthday boy. Shift is far from my favorite beer, but it was great with grilled sausage and chicken and the cans were handy. Baba remains one of my favorite summer beers, it's probably the best recreation of a Czech dark lager I've found in the US. Otiose is doing very well, good balance of sour/sweet (maybe a little high on the sweet for some) with the guava and barrel flavors both noticeable.

Pretty sure ESB is its own style apart from Amber. Anyways, I'm kind of an ESB fanatic myself. Goose Island's Harvest isn't so much an ESB as it is a pale. Pretty disappointed with it since I've loved everything I've had from them so far. To be honest, their Honkers Ale is actually closer to an ESB than the Harvest. I will have to try Southern Tier's take on it, though.

But yes, get Fullers. Especially if you can find it on tap. It really is the standard to judge all others. There's an English pub near my school/job that always has it on tap, and despite the markup on what should be a pretty cheap beer, I always fall for it. You might also want to try Wells' Bombardier for another decently accessible and authentic ESB, and Coniston Bluebird for a different interpretation on the style.

Hrm, I guess I just called them all "ESB Amber Ales" because the name of the first one I ever had. Ratebeer has them all listed as Premium Bitter/ESB for what it's worth and I've enjoyed all of the beers I've had listed as that. As for Southern Tier's the best way I can describe it is a moderately sweet caramel with a slight toasted flavor and a moderate citrus sweetness, reminds me of tangerines or oranges. It's possibly one of my favorite beers, despite not liking much of what they put out lately.

Thanks for the other recommendations. I know Fuller's uses the second runnings of the wort to make another beer, is ESB the first of the runnings?

yeah, hadn't seen it in VA for quite a while. it's probably the best somewhat-regularly-available gueuze you can find in VA- better than Oud Beersel, Hanssens, Lindemans, and Girardin- but not on par with Cantillon (edit- Cantillon has not been spotted here for a number of years). considering the lack of good sours in the mid-Atlantic, though, it's worth snagging an extra bottle or two. haven't opened one yet, but Mikkeller Spontanale is also around (as is the strawberry version, but i hear it's a disaster).

Drinking the Firestone Walker XV from tap. It's good, but I'm not blown away by it. Quite sweet and boozy with a ton of barrel notes: molasses, toffee, vanillin, etc. Quite a bit lighter in both color and mouthfeel than I was expecting. I think this will be really good with some time, but I'm not sure that the alcoholic heat will ever subside.

places that sold out of Spontanale still have plenty of the strawberry, so i guess word got around. drank the Spontanale just now and it's a solid gueuze, but i'd prefer to stock up on more Tilquin (even if it wasn't $2 less per bottle).

I'm posting about Petrol Station again. :v:

Beer is trendy in Houston and one of the places that opened up as a result is The Hay Merchant. It's an OK place and they have very good food and beer selection, but (a) they're very hipster (b) they're expensive -- most beer starts at $6 and they do stuff like sell smaller glasses of fancier beer than necessary given the ABV and trying to sell that for what other joints charge for a full pint.

Here's their logo:

Up north, Petrol Station (which has been around since 1994 or so) announced today that they were producing this growler:

This is the sort of reason why I'm already missing Petrol Station a lot. They are the craziest bunch of stoner IPA-heads on the planet and I wish every city had one.

To me, those types are the ones who have zero desire to learn anything about craft beer, yet they form hordes within a "popular upscale" beer bar (think Hay Merchant, Churchkey type places- especially this loving bar) mostly for scene cred. It's cool to be into beer and they wanna be part of the fun before moving into the next hip thing. Myself, I could care less about the atmosphere where I drink. You have places like Tony's Darts Away or Toronado which aren't exactly the nicest, but at least having a pint there means higher likelihood of being around people who genuinely like beer.
