Really liked .hack//sign even if everybody else in the world hated it, so I'm watching SAO.

Either I missed it or they dropped it completely, but one of the first things they point out in .hack and and it being a huge plot point was how Tsukasa never logged out ever. In SAO, nobody logs out, ever. Why are these people not all dead after three days? Frankly, I feel like they're not answering this question because the answer is either:

1) Completely moot. Everybody went to the 'SAO player hospital' where they've been kept alive and on life support for years.
2) It's all bullshit time manipulation and all the players are experiencing the events at lightning speed, so what they think is 2 years is really 2 hours/days/weeks or whatever.

The other thing that bugs me a little is that there aren't any new players. I know it would seem strange because, hey, it's a game you can't leave except for winning or dying. But crazy things happen, and I'm absolutely certain people would attempt to log into the game knowing they'd be trapped because there's a chance of fame or fortune for surviving. Hell, maybe they fully intend to live a life of luxury in a video game and don't care about leaving anyways. The ultimate escape tool. There's also no mention of hackers or hack attempts (when the issue came up, it was just a trick), which is surprising as well. Being mum about this stuff just furthers the idea they're going to pull something later on. I get the feeling there's either a big, stupid secret related to it, or they're literally going to ignore the question completely and just say, "they uh..they're fine ok." and that's it.

Related to .hack, wasn't there another anime? Was it any good? SAO has me kind of wanting something else to watch that's related (and not terrible).

1 is the answer. There was some light exposition relating to it in the books that the anime cut for time, but they'll probably come back to it at some point in the future.

They never really directly address why there's never any new players. The Nerve Gear is supposed to still be a really niche and hard-to-acquire piece of technology at this point, and is banned right after SAO's launch, so it's not like there's likely to be that many people with availability to jump in. I'd imagine that the authorities/families of the players might like to try to send someone in to convey messages, but if that hasn't happened there's a good chance that in addition to all the other restrictions put on the server, they also locked anyone new from joining in.

In-game hackers probably wouldn't be a problem since they're limited to what they can do within the in-game interface, so there wouldn't be more than bugs and exploits, like the Sleep PK that was mentioned. Outside hackers they do kind of handwave away by saying that the core processes of the server are a black box that nobody other than the creator of the game can really handle.

Novel spoilers, but it's all stuff that happened much 'earlier' and they just opted not to cover it in the anime for some reason. It would have fallen in pretty much the first episode, had they included it:

It's been a while but if I have it all remembered right: They all got moved to hospitals. At the same time that that the announcement was made in-game about the whole death-game situation, a similar announcement was made in the 'real world' via some mechanism that either they didn't specify or I just don't recall. Either way, he gave them some specified window of time from the announcement (a few hours, I believe? -- essentially the duration of the battery backup in the nerv gear) to let them be disconnected without auto-frying them. So long as they were back up and in-game before x amount of time, everything was cool. This is also why there are no new players, it went on lock-down super fast.

So, there you go.

edit: The actual passage, if you care -- again, early first-episode-ish novel spoiler stuff: "To be a little more specific, disconnection from an outside source of electricity for ten minutes, being cut off from the system for more than two hours, or any attempt to: unlock, dismantle, or destroy the Nerve Gear. If any of these conditions are met, the brain destruction sequence will start. These conditions have been made known to the government and the public through mass-media in the outside world. On that note, there have been several cases where the relatives or friends have ignored the warnings and tried to forcefully remove the Nerve Gear. The result...

...regretfully 213 players have already exited this game, and the real world, forever.

Players, there is no need to worry about the bodies you left on the other side. As of this moment, all TV, radio, and Internet media are repeatedly reporting this situation; including the fact that there have been numerous deaths. The danger of having your Nerve Gear taken off has already all but disappeared. In a moment, using the two hours I have provided, all of you will be transported to hospitals or similar institutes and be given the best treatment. So you can relax... and concentrate on beating the game."

I can't imagine how omitting any of that is going to create some sort of dramatic reveal later on since it's actually a pretty dull, common-sense sort of reaction to the situation, suspension of disbelief aside.

Because it leaves open the distinct possibility of dying from thirst or from your power going out, or even the entire premise itself. If everything he said is true, how are they staying alive to beat the game? Mentioning they're getting carted to hospitals in the real world actually cements the idea that they're trapped in this game, actually. It's not a little detail to be ignored. Like I said, .hack treats this as a central issue to the entire story, and for good reason.

In my opinion, .hack//SIGN was the high point of the franchise. (I like .hack//SIGN but, think of it as in the same way a tree is the highest point of a desert.) All of the games are absolute rubbish, even though .hack//GU is slightly better than the first 4 games. The second (legend of the twilight) anime is standard uguu moe stuff that has almost no plot, and a lot of the side material (.hack//Liminality, .hack novels) touches on the "main mystery" of The World, but are devoid of substance and ultimately unsatisfying. I haven't played the psp game. Actually, I heard .hack//ZERO or .hack//CELL (novels/manga, I think) are somewhat interesting. I don't remember why, though...

Basically, everything original in .hack was established in .hack//SIGN. All of this original story material can fill maybe 5 paragraphs and it is spread out over an obscenely wide array of media. It's a real shame, because they have top notch musicians and artists on their team, but no writers. You should just watch Accel World for free on Hulu if you're looking to kill some time between SAO episodes...

I kind of wish SAO spent some more time adding in characters, especially since Kirito was drafted into a guild. I think it could be interesting to see a bigger picture about how different people cope with being trapped in the game and how they change over time. Most of the secondary characters end up dying, which I think is useful for constantly reminding the audience of how dangerous it is, but it's getting to the point where none of these characters are interesting because they just show up and die. It would be cool if Kirito was forced to party/raid with a bunch of kooky internet people in KoB or something. You could really do a lot personality-wise with characters you might encounter in this scenario.

Legend of the Twilight manga is substantially less annoying obligatory-cute poo poo but it's fairly minor in the scheme of things.

There's a still a fair bit of sidestory material that's untranslated. These aren't from any of the LNs but just published on the net or something. Episode 2 is one of these. It cut a informative foreshadowy subplot out, cut out most of Kirito and Asuna being in a party outside of doing the dungeon, and cut out the information broker who appears in episode 3. There's a short story where Kirito acquires the Unarmed Combat skill and some other things. Thus far, these bits and pieces have largely been exploring Kirito's early days of SAO (The original LN covers episode one, then eight). They've done a good job incorporating the bits that felt necessary (Clearing the first floor, why Kirito avoids guilds, some Kirito and Asuna bonding) while cutting things to keep the flow. Going from "Kirito leaves Klein behind" to "Kirito and Asuna eat ragout rabbit" would be too jarring. The anime is clearly aiming to end at the conclusion of the second arc so there's not a lot of room for too much extra stuff at this point.

There is, in fact, a hell of a lot of territory to cover if they plan on ending with Fairy Dance's ending. And, to be entirely honest, the real meat of the setting takes place AFTER Fairy Dance, not before.

One of the things I love about how A-1 animates this and how the cast comes in is how well they convey the birth of the Black Swordsman persona early on. You can actually watch him try to carve parts of himself away in order to endure.

I broke down and read 6 volumes over the past three days. I was worried it would make the show less enjoyable, but I don't think it will. After the first two or three novels, the baka-tsuki translations start to hurt my brain if I read them too closely.

In both formats, (ep 10)I was glad to see Godfrey die. I felt bad for the nameless 4th guy from the novel, but Kuradeel was right. He had muscles for brains. Wanted to test how they reacted to dangerous situations but couldn't even use an antidote crystal what a joke.

The episode left me thinking sexual assault would be a big issue in the game but that turned out to just be a detail from the novel they left out (trivial novel explanation)the game pops up a dialog whenever it detects potentially unwanted contact that can be used to teleport the harasser to jail.
(ep 10)They probably did that to make it less explicit that they hooked up, since they also had Kirito out of bed and clothed for the following conversation.

I prefer the anime's chronological presentation to the novels that have all the ep3-7 side stories as the second volume. After slumming it on all the lower floors below his level it built a lot of anticipation for the front lines.

You'll always get translation "purists" who believe there's no way one can capture the essence of certain words or phrases.

It's pretty silly. The argument can be made for anime or manga translations simply because of the lack of space/time. Text-wise though, you pretty much have all the room in the world to capture the essence of things. Phoenix Wright went further than just translation and into the realm of localization and it did an amazing job of managing to stay relatively close despite changing the setting. Hell, it did an amazing job at the humor and even managed to keep some jokes and gags parallel to the originals.

It just takes more effort than most people are willing to put into it, especially if they're not paid.

I used to think like that, until I had seen what a really good localization can do for a project. I used to jump at subs even if dubs were available because I was used to lovely 4kids like dubbing. Like recording a great dub, good localization is a lot of work. Sometimes people don't want to do it even when they ARE getting paid for it.

Honestly I'd say that the people working on translations of light novels should just pick up a piece of professionally translated Japanese literature (ie a Japanese novel that is not anime) and see how they do it. There's plenty of Japanese novels out there that have a smooth, natural sounding translation. There's no reason you can't apply that theory to what is essentially young adult material. It certainly would take more work, but it would result in something that is actually readable!

Far too often the story is "I have boneits! I will fatally contract in five days so I must get thing done and ENJOY LIFE" and poo poo turning the ailment from "tragic thing character has that will enviably kill them" into a cheesy time-limit that one could replace without much issue if not for the promise of at least one notch on the casualty list.

Here, whilst it's is part of the character's drive, it doesn't interfere with the story by and large until such a point until the (initial) goal is had.
