What comparable 2.1 systems did you compare those to? Just curious because I'm always skeptical of Bose stuff.

Just moved in to a new apartment. Pretty standard one-bedroom affair, except this one had a bare walk-in closet.

Perfect size to hold an Ikea Galant with extension.

Not great for my phone's auto-focus. But the room is semi-soundproofed with two opposing doors for cross-ventilation. And they're putting in an outlet on Monday.

This is a work in progress. Stripped and repainted my home office removing my old Sauder like desk. Had a custom 7½ foot laminate counter top (Wilsonart HD Luna Night) built by a local contractor which I mounted onto 2x2 wooden cleats and a pair of good size (21" x 15") brackets.

Twin Dell 24 " monitors were mounted on an Ergotron DS100 arm. All the cabling back to the PC is tied together using Monoprice spiral wrapping bands. Mounted on the back of the monitors are Antec Soundscience Halo 6 LED bias lighting strips which really help with eye strain. Those two monitors really pump out the lumens.

The keyboard is a wireless (RF) Dell model which I really favor due to the round volume knob on it. Next to it is a wired Logitech G500 gaming mouse.

The speakers are Boston Acoustic HD-7's (circa 1990 or so) and, although I am not an audiophile, I think they sound fantastic. They are 8 ohm speakers designed to be run at 10 - 50 watts per channel. The speakers were mounted with Pinpoint AM10 mounts and the wires run down the inside of the wall.

The audio is supplied by a circa 1979 Pioneer SX 780 receiver pushing 45 watts per channel at 8 ohms. Formerly I had a Durabrand 5.1 surround system which was ugly as hell but sounded, well, meh. I picked this unit up from Craigslist at what turned out to be a bargain $75. It looks cool and sounds fantastic paired up the the HD-7's. There is also a Monoprice 8 inch 60 watt subwoofer under the desk fed by the B outputs from the Pioneer (so I can just disable it if I want).

The audio is fed from the line-out of a HiFiMAN HM-101 Portable USB DAC, a little $39 DAC which I think does a really nice job of improving the basic audio that comes out of the Optiplex 755 system.

The Optiplex 755 has an upgraded power supply and CPU (3.00 GHz Core 2 Quad) with a maxed out 8 GB RAM and a Radeon HD 6700 video card. The system drive is a 256 GB Crucial M4 SSD with two additional 1.5 TB drives internal to the chassis. There are three external 2 TB and one 1 TB drives in external enclosures. Would love to replace this system but the only game I play is L4D2 and it runs the old Source engine without an issue.

I struggled with something to hold the computer and receiver finally settling on a dirt cheap Walmart TV stand ($20) which fits the computer, four external hard drives and on top are the TWC cable modem (30 down 5 up) and an Airport Extreme dual band N wireless router.

The laptop is an older (silver keyboard) 17 inch MacBook Pro mounted on an Ergotron Neo-Flex arm and paired with an older Apple Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

The light is a cheapie from Walmart. The fridge holds my jugs of milk, lube and Glock ;-)

On top of being my desktop this system is running as a Plex Media Server, serving several TB of content to my Roku box, a couple of iPad 3's and my daughters MacBook Air which connects in from her apartment. I also run a Subsonic music server which serves up 193 GB of music via the web client and iSub on our IOS devices. The library is too large for iTunes Match so this is a great substitute.

On order is a Synology DS413j NAS system which will host the music library and video content served up via Plex.

I still need to get a set of window treatments and a slip cover for an older chair and hassock I have on the other side of the room.

For Life
My attempt at a cheap standing desk (http://iamnotaprogrammer.com/Ikea-Standing-desk-for-22-dollars.html).

I have a big ledge by my window which made the perfect place to set things up.

The LACK table makes a nice place to mount rack mountable things. I have a 4U case underneath for the computer but it is just sitting there, not mounted. There's a high barstool-like chair for when I get tired as I'm still getting used to standing, and there's always my now empty desk for longer breaks.

That my friend is from the fine furniture purveyors at Walmart:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-TV-Cart-for-TVs-up-to-23-1-2/16451701

The actual price at my store was $20, but I had to go to four Walmarts to find it. I originally had my heart set on a hand-me-down that didn't pan out. Once I found this I was just as happy though.

I wouldn't want to stand on it but it is more than sturdy enough for what you see on it.

It's crazy how big you can get libraries in subsonic.

I have about 500Gb of music on mine with no noticable loss of performance. I also occasionally turn on the video streaming which increses the library size to many TB. Donating for this excellent software was a no brainer.

Looks great. Free standing desk solutions are great, albeit not for everyone. You really need to have a relatively small distance between walls to do so. My desk is similar in size, but I used 2 layers of MDF and a strut brace for the middle. It's strong enough to stand on, and currently has my monitor, laptop, xbox, 42" TV and half of my junk sat on it.

Ideally I'd like to get myself some kind of proper surface for it as it's currently untreated. Spill any water or tea on it, and it'll stain, also the MDF starts to get quite fuzzy.

Thanks. This is a split-level house with the fireplace coming up through the bedroom I commandeered as my office. The wall surrounding the fireplace is what makes up the right side wall surface the desk is mounted into. That's why the relatively small distance (7.5 feet) between walls.

The desktop was professionally made with high-grade kitchen counter laminate. It is completely sealed which is nice. Now it is laminate so you can gouge a nice scratch if you are not careful.

The cantilever brackets are 1/8 inch steel and rated for 1000 pounds. They are nothing like the usual ones you get a the home store. I got them from the company which built the countertop for me.

I've listened to / own(ed) a bunch of random high(ish)-end stereo stuff, and own a set of Companion 2's and even those are pretty amazing. No high end sparkle, but instruments and voices sound pretty realistic. Music sounds good and detailed, and on Skype it's like the people you're talking to are in the room. You can tell the DSP in the speakers is doing its job, and that the engineers are taking advantage of the fact that they know the speakers are going to be sitting on a table and using that for bass reinforcement.

I also bought a set of MusicMonitors, but promptly returned them when I realized I spent $300 on computer speakers. They sounded loving fantastic, however.

Bose seriously makes some of the best computer speakers I've heard - when you know what kind of environment the speakers are going to be used in, DSP and other fancy tricks can work wonders.
