So, I spent the summer working at a camp for children with special needs. We were luckily situated right on a lake, and took pontoon boat rides each week. Pontoon boat rides are loving magical -- even the most challenging behaviors disappear once kids get on the boat. It's this amazing placation machine. Anyway, I took my camera out once or twice on the pontoon boat, and I also took a kayak ride with my camera on one of my evenings off and brought the camera.

Unfortunately, my 70-200 f/4 was still broke, so these were all manually focused with a focusing ring that had to be squeezed really hard to engage the focus mechanism. So it was a bit tough, but I had fun anyway.

No idea what these are but they're cool.

Greater Ani are one of my favorites- I almost did my graduate work on those. Hoatzin are also pretty rad. Nice photos!

I was in BC for a conference last week, and a friend took a few of us down to the Reifel (sp?) waterfowl park south of Vancouver. There wasn't a ton of diversity, but we got great looks at a few cool birds (merlin), and especially Cackling Goose and Sandhill Crane that were just about within touching distance. I only had a point and shoot unfortunately.

I like that a lot. flying ravens/crows can be fun ones to really mess with the colors. The silhouettes are so iconic. You could making a really dark vivid sky color, and make the egg golden yellow or something.

If you can figure out which county Victoria falls into on this list it should generate a nice graph of species logged in eBird in the month of October during the last two years. October might be getting a bit late for most of the passerine migrants (Warblers, etc.) but there may still be some moving through. The most exciting bird on the island for birders is the Skylark (introduced from Europe 100+ years ago, this is the only place they are found in this hemisphere), but it's not a very photogenic bird. It can also be very hard to find. I spent about 8 hours driving around without locating them earlier this year.

Oh Bambi, I cried so hard when those hunters shot your mommy...
Haven't been having the greatest luck with birds this past week.

There's a group of about 10 pelicans out on the lake by my dad's place, but they just sit on this warf that's a wee bit out of range of my 300mm lens. There's 2 herons (not sure what kind though) nesting at the far end of the lake as well, but there's no good viewing angle to see them on foot. On Thursday I chased a Blue Jay around for awhile at around 7pm, had great light, but the drat thing would always fly into the shade or somewhere where there were branches obstructing the majority of it's body.

That being said, did have some success;

I'm 95% sure these are Cedar Waxwings and not Bohemian, but not 100% sure as I haven't seen any adults around of either species

Sibley's shows the juvenile Bohemians as having the same rufous undertail coverts as the adults which would make those Cedars since the undertail feathers are white/cream. Nice shots all around.

edit: I am sad for knowing that those huge flocks of Bohemian's I saw in Edmonton in March are not present all year. They were the highlight of my trip.
