On the budget side, I'm a big fan of New Siam I. 280 baht for a very clean single room with decently clean shared bath, very close to Khao San Road on Soi Rambuttri. I stay there pretty much every time I go to Bangkok nowadays.

One of our instructors is one of the degenerate staff at Banyan and at times we've had DMTs who were regulars there, but I've resisted becoming a regular. I've been present for a few balls-on-fire incidents as well as a few Bailey's-from-a-shoe incidents (including having my shoe being that shoe)... and I think I am still the record-holder for the canine jungle shot.

I'm still trying to plan out whether I head home back to Scotland for xmas/new year, or spend it away from Singapore - Bangkok being my number 1 'go to'. How many of you will actually be kicking about for a beer/relax across the holiday period? I love a holiday and all, but it's not the same if I dont have Goonbro's for a beer.

Roughly 700baht for a standard no frills room with AC. They got a pool, massage, hair salon , security deposit, and luggage storage on site. I stayed there for like 2 months.

For anyone looking for something AUTHENTIC to do, the boat races are being held up here at Nonthaburi Pier at the Northernmost boat stop today and tomorrow. Presently the typical Chao Phraya Express transit boats are running as well, but I'm guessing they'll stop at Rama V Bridge during the races. The boat races are pretty entertaining as domestic events go. Basically, dudes in really long rowboats compete against one another. Huge stands are set up, tons of people flood in and get drunk, the muckety mucks hire hot air baloons (there's something you never see here) and so on. It's still quite early today and it's a very overcast morning, so it's hard to get pretty shots, but I took a few quick photos of the guys practicing from my balcony:     Dudes in white were really nice, I met some of them earlier. They kept calling up to my baclony goofing around and the coxswain was yelling at them, heh. EDIT:  Team Win Mosike:

See if they're doing drug deals during the race, throwing around tiny ziploc bags with yabaa. - - - On the topic of learning the local language: As you learn more you're also forced to listen to more of the silly things they say  Like you're back in your country and sitting next to two women gossiping about something stupid, except it's everywhere.- - - VV - You can find water machines near most (cheap) apartments where you'll get one liter for 1 baht. The start of November we're flying to Singapore. We have no real interest staying in the city, so are there any interesting beach destinations close by? Our requirements are that it has to be fairly close (half a day of travel), and offer scuba diving places. Quieter budgety place also a plus. Indonesia has the Riau islands very close to Singapore, any diving opportunities there in November? My friend hasn't done diving ever, and I've only done it once, so nothing too advanced. What do you long term expats in Thailand do for health insurance? I realize a year or even 2 isn't all that long, since I meet plenty of people who had being going longer when I was backpaking, but at what point is travel insurance no longer ideal? Before I just got travel insurance as a formality and "so my body will be sent back to family and funeral costs are taken care of in case of death  ". I should probably start giving a poo poo...
