Hah that's a coincidence, I'm at bullys now. What do you look like? Otherwise I can just start asking strangers if they've seen any redneck Texan escapees nearby.

On the budget side, I'm a big fan of New Siam I. 280 baht for a very clean single room with decently clean shared bath, very close to Khao San Road on Soi Rambuttri. I stay there pretty much every time I go to Bangkok nowadays.

One of our instructors is one of the degenerate staff at Banyan and at times we've had DMTs who were regulars there, but I've resisted becoming a regular. I've been present for a few balls-on-fire incidents as well as a few Bailey's-from-a-shoe incidents (including having my shoe being that shoe)... and I think I am still the record-holder for the canine jungle shot.

Ha. I have to walk past Banyan on my way to and from home, which is both a blessing and a curse... I am turning into one of the degenerates, too. I might have to make a new rule for myself: no gin and tonic when Amy is working. kru posted:A lot of people swear by Lub-D Silom. I've stayed at Lub D Siam a couple of times recently and it's pretty good, but for the price of an ensuite room it's possible to get a proper hotel. Still, the location is pretty good - almost directly below National Stadium skytrain, more or less across the road from MBK. Finch! fucked around with this message at 12:57 on Sep 14, 2012 |

I'm still trying to plan out whether I head home back to Scotland for xmas/new year, or spend it away from Singapore - Bangkok being my number 1 'go to'. For anyone looking for something AUTHENTIC to do, the boat races are being held up here at Nonthaburi Pier at the Northernmost boat stop today and tomorrow. Presently the typical Chao Phraya Express transit boats are running as well, but I'm guessing they'll stop at Rama V Bridge during the races. The boat races are pretty entertaining as domestic events go. Basically, dudes in really long rowboats compete against one another. Huge stands are set up, tons of people flood in and get drunk, the muckety mucks hire hot air baloons (there's something you never see here) and so on. It's still quite early today and it's a very overcast morning, so it's hard to get pretty shots, but I took a few quick photos of the guys practicing from my balcony: Dudes in white were really nice, I met some of them earlier. They kept calling up to my baclony goofing around and the coxswain was yelling at them, heh. EDIT: Team Win Mosike: ReindeerF fucked around with this message at 02:52 on Sep 15, 2012 |

Lol @ Team Motorbike. Definitely need to check for illegal substances on those guys. See if they're doing drug deals during the race, throwing around tiny ziploc bags with yabaa. - - - On the topic of learning the local language: As you learn more you're also forced to listen to more of the silly things they say Like you're back in your country and sitting next to two women gossiping about something stupid, except it's everywhere. - - - VV - You can find water machines near most (cheap) apartments where you'll get one liter for 1 baht. It should be somewhat cleaner than tap water but this is Thailand so you'll never know. Ringo R fucked around with this message at 06:22 on Sep 15, 2012 |

I drank from the tap in Korea as well all the time though, but is it really recommended to buy bottled? I'd just boil water but nothing to do that with here.

Seeing as how the Thai water treatment works here I wouldn't drink tap water. You probably won't get deathly ill or anything but it's pretty gross. I brush my teeth with it anyways but.. this is a place where they have found severed body parts in the fresh water klong (canal) before. That is the same water that is used for drinking and shower water.

It's like THB 1 to fill up a liter and a half, I think.

The start of November we're flying to Singapore. We have no real interest staying in the city, so are there any interesting beach destinations close by? Our requirements are that it has to be fairly close (half a day of travel), and offer scuba diving places. Quieter budgety place also a plus. Indonesia has the Riau islands very close to Singapore, any diving opportunities there in November? My friend hasn't done diving ever, and I've only done it once, so nothing too advanced. Malaysia's east coast also apparently has some islands available, though those seem to be mostly for resort types. DanTheFryingPan fucked around with this message at 23:14 on Sep 15, 2012 |

What do you long term expats in Thailand do for health insurance? I realize a year or even 2 isn't all that long, since I meet plenty of people who had being going longer when I was backpaking, but at what point is travel insurance no longer ideal? Before I just got travel insurance as a formality and "so my body will be sent back to family and funeral costs are taken care of in case of death ". I should probably start giving a poo poo...

Even as a crusty apprentice, I was enrolled in "the system" in a matter of weeks. Even though I'll start off volunteering on a farm in Thailand, I wouldn't be surprised if I end up at a NGO... No, not guilt tripping westerners on the streets into donating money to "save the poor children". More like showing rice farmers that you can get way more out of your land if you stop spraying the poo poo out of gov't-backed rice fields. Not sure if NGOs cover insurance, they seem more about that pocket money. Either way, after 2 years of volunteer farmhand work in the EU, it's definitely time to stop being a bum. Maybe Southeast Asia wasn't the best choice hahah. In SEA it seems like as a westerner you're either a student, english teacher (avoiding that as much as possible, no offense to those who have done or are doing it intended), or a freelancer/import-export mastermind. There was a time when I could've learned to put together a porn blog to live off of click traffic, but that time is long gone! Took a trip over to Thaivisa for some laughs. Turns out they have a farming forum... Looks like on top of resisting the urge to again end up at grad school in the middle of nowhere, I also have to resist the idea of setting up a rubber tree and pig farm in Isaan. hahaha EDIT: ReindeerF posted:If you need non-travel, there are plenty of options - most of them either American or European, so you'll recognize them, heh. Oracle posted:Speaking of tap water, is it safe to drink in Hong Kong or is it one of those case by case basis things? People looked at me in shock when I said I drank the tap water in Hong Kong. I don't know how accurate this anecdote is. Can anyone help me out? My family is very unreceptive of me travelling alone. I've never travelled alone by myself. Or bought an airline ticket. They are refusing to help me out. I am going to Thailand on Nov 16-17. Do I buy an air plane ticket now? And the return flight? Anyone have any favourites they use to search for flights and hotels? Orbitz? Should I book a hotel now? My plan is to land in Bangkok, rent a motorcycle, and then head south. I will pre-book a place in Bangkok so that I have a place to stay for a few days. But my family wants an itinerary of all the places that I plan to visit. Should I go that in-depth? Legal documents that I should bring: "The travel gear thread wasn't very clear on this" Passport and photocopy of it (to rent a motorcycle) Credit card Debit card? Drivers license (I should check if a Canadian license is valid in Thailand) Get Travel insurance Am I missing anything else? I already planned out pretty much everything that I will bring via the travel gear thread with the exception of the legal documents that I should bring. Also, should I go see a travel agent? What do people think about Air China? There tickets seem pretty cheap. I will of course keep on planning and reading up on Thailand. Thanks. There really isn't anyone else I can ask.
