Okay, I think we're making good progress here. Two things: A) I feel like Three-Finger is the most valuable piece being exchanged in this trade, so I need a good variety of stuff in return. To be fair, you seem quite willing to provide, so it looks like a deal is very possible. B) One of the guiding principles of the Super League is "You can never have too many Tim Teufels."  The Contractually Obligated, Completely Irrevocable Super-League VII Dynamo League Preview Welcome to another preview. As is the custom, I give out relative grades to players. Most starters in the Super-League are good in Major League terms, so it's really a matter of how good they are in comparison to other Super-League teams. Today, the Dynamo League, Part 1...  The Memento Mori Division has produced more Super-League Champions (3), then any other division. Of course, all three of those championships were won by the Skyhawks, rest their souls, and in fact, you could make the argument that pretty much every other team that's played in the division has been terrible, but hey, Skyhawks! This year, the division gets a shot in the arm with the addition of the Postmodernists, who murdered everyone in the Expansion Cup and inspired most of you to panic, because if there's one guy that should scare your shitless, it's John Tudor. Still, if you aren't buying them as real contenders, there's still the Burma Imperialists, who won the division last year and have always looked decent, if not overpowering. Also, you've got the Bulldogs, who are basically cheaters, but do have the advantage of having the crafty TKBomber as their owner. Finally, you've got the Second City Saints, who are straight edge, and therefore are better than you. Catcher 1. '84 Carlton Fisk (BUR) 2. '05 Mike Piazza (SXE) 3. '43 Bill Dickey (PAR) 4. '41 Ernie Lombardi (POR) Old catchers of the Dynamo League, unite! All four of these catchers are past their primes. Fisk isn't that young, but he did play for nine seasons after 1985, and was pretty decent for most of them. Piazza is a better hitter than Fisk, by a lot, but has no place in the field by 2005, and catcher really is a defense-first position. Bill Dickey is better behind the plate than Piazza, and maybe Fisk, but lacks their power, and is pretty creaky by '43 to boot. Lombardi was slow at the best of times, and by '41, may very have been the slowest regular player in baseball history. First Baseman 1. '94 Jeff Bagwell (BUR) 2. '96 Mark McGwire (POR) 3. '03 Todd Helton/'60 Joe Adcock (SXE) 4. '02 Sam Crawford (PAR) Bagwell isn't going to win the MVP again, but he's still a topflight hitter, and, unlike the rest, doesn't really have a glaring flaw in his game. McGwire will hit home runs and draw walks, but he's also going to hit .220 and be a bad, bad, bad fielder. First base defense isn't that important, though. Helton and Adcock form an interesting platoon, but I'm not sure that, even combined, they're better than Bagwell or McGwire, especially since most of the playing time is going to go to Helton outside of Coors Field. Sam Crawford isn't really a first baseman. At all. Second Baseman 1. '11 Eddie Collins (BUR) 2. '02 Nap Lajoie (PAR) 3. '31 Charlie Gehringer (POR) 4. '03 Jose Vidro/'92 Jeff Kent (SXE) Tough group. Collins and Lajoie were both great contact hitters, but Collins was a better fielder (probably) and was a bit better at drawing walks. Charlie Gehringer is a Hall of Famer, but he's not quite at the level of the first two. Vidro/Kent is another interesting platoon for the Saints, but is kind of iffy defensively, which isn't great in the middle infield. Third Baseman 1. '54 Eddie Mathews (BUR) 2. '60 Eddie Mathews/'05 David Wright (SXE) 3. '02 Jimmy Collins (POR) 4. '02 Joe Kelley (PAR) Young Mathews beats Old Mathews. For whatever reason, once he got to his 30s, Mathews kind of fell off of a cliff, and so it's quite a bit better to get a younger one. Jimmy Collins and Joe Kelley are both decent enough for deadball era hitters, but there are some issues with their fielding because of the era they're from, and they don't have a lot of power or patience at the plate. Shortstop 1. '84 Alan Trammell (POR) 2. '85 Ozzie Smith (PAR) 3. '05 Jose Reyes (SXE) 4. '75 Robin Yount (BUR) Trammell is solid, and that's enough to be the best in their division. He can field, he can hit, and while he's not incredible at either, he's okay at both. Ozzie Smith may be the greatest defensive shortstop ever, but he was never a good hitter, and in the first years of his career, he was absolutely awful at the plate. I have no faith in Jose Reyes, especially not in 2005, even if I'm not exactly sure why. Robin Yount is just too young in 1975 to be more than adequate. Left Fielder 1. '86 Barry Bonds (PAR) 2. '35 Joe Medwick (POR) 3. '51 Ralph Kiner (BUR) 4. '19 Joe Jackson (SXE) Bonds always wins. Always. That's just how it works. Joe Medwick once won a triple crown, and his nickname was "Ducky", so, kind of a mixed message there. He's been streaky in the Super-League, but he deserves another chance. Ralph Kiner is basically 'Mark McGwire lite', although he can play left field, so that does make him a bit more useful. Joe Jackson doesn't have home run power, and is bad defensively, and is decidedly not straight-edge. Center Fielder 1. '62 Willie Mays (PAR) 2. '03 Carlos Beltran (SXE) 3. '00 Jim Edmonds (BUR) 4. '84 Chet Lemon (POR) Willie Mays is Willie Mays. I don't think I need any further explanation for that. Carlos Beltran usually has good stats in the Super-League, and is just a good all-around player. Edmonds is a great center fielder, but has had some contact/on-base issues in the past, and there's a non-zero chance that happens again this season. Finally, Chet Lemon's first name is still "Chet", and that still infuriates me. Right Fielder 1. '60 Hank Aaron (SXE) 2. '01 Billy Hamilton (PAR) 3. '84 Kirk Gibson (POR) 4. '10 Lance Berkman/'89 Danny Tartabull (BUR) Kind of a mixed bag here. Aaron is clearly the class of this group, and I don't think anyone would disagree with that. Billy Hamilton was baseball's first great leadoff man, but that was in the 1890s, by 1901, he was getting up there in years. Kirk Gibson would probably mean more to me if I were a Tigers or Dodgers fan, but I just see him as a decent hitter with a poor throwing arm. The Berkman/Tartabull platoon makes the best of a bad situation, but it's still a bad situation. SP1 1. '?? Hilton Smith (BUR) 2. '78 Bert Blyleven (POR) 3. '60 Whitey Ford (SXE) 4. '02 Noddles Hahn (PAR) Hilton Smith has usually been more than solid in the Super-League, and I think that's going to continue in this season unless I decide to punish Viscount Slim for some slight. Let me check...no, I don't plan on doing that. Bert Blyleven has a really, really cool curveball and also had a penchant for setting his teammates' shoelaces on fire. Whitey Ford is solid in the Super-League but, again, is not straight-edge. Noodles Hahn's name reminds me of 'Pickles the Drummer'. Seriously, though, if your ace's name is 'Noodles', something has gone wrong. SP2 1. '21 Joe Wood (POR) 2. '05 Pedro Martinez (SXE) 3. '66 Sam McDowell (BUR) 4. '86 Rick Reuschel (PAR) Joe Wood's arm shouldn't work in 1921, but it does in Mogul. So, that's a lucky break. Come to think of it, Martinez' arm wasn't very good in 2005 either, but he'll be okay too, probably. Sam McDowell is living lightning. All power, no control and a serious drinking problem. Rick Reuschel, by 1986, was really just a really good innings-eater, and I'm not sure how well that's going to work in the Super-League. SP3 1. '01 Vic Willis (PAR) 2. '82 Don Sutton (BUR) 3. '37 Lefty Gomez (POR) 4. '60 Warren Spahn (SXE) Did you know that Vic Willis is in the Hall of Fame? Unless you are a lineal descendant of Vic Willis, I kind of doubt you did. Still, a Hall of Fame deadball pitcher is nothing to sneeze at. Don Sutton has also been good in the Super-League for reasons difficult to ascertain, but probably having to do with superior sandpaper being available to Sutton. Lefty Gomez should be solid, if not exciting. Old Warren Spahn is a lefty whose fastball probably tops out at 85 mph by this point in his career. That doesn't sound too promising. SP4 1. '02 Addie Joss (PAR) 2. '24 Red Faber (SXE) 3. '84 Jack Morris (POR) 4. '06 Zack Greinke (BUR) Joss has always been money in the Super-League, to the point where I'm convinced that he didn't really die of meningitis, but instead was killed by one of you traveling in time to prevent the Super-League from being overrun with Josses. Red Faber has a spitball. It's a very nice spitball, but it is about the entirety of his positive aspects as a pitcher. Jack Morris is the greatest innings-eater in Major League History. That's not going to fly in the Super-League. If Greinke struggled with depression in real life, I hate to think what the Super-League is going to do to him. Closer 1. '78 Dennis Eckersley (SXE) 2. '97 Robb Nen (PAR) 3. '07 Jonathan Papelbon (BUR) 4. '78 Kent Tekulve (POR) Eck is one of the greatest relievers ever, and always did good work for the Skyhawks. Sounds good to me. Robb Nen and Papelbon are both quality closers, but I like Nen's power a bit more than Papelbon's...whatever he has. Tekulve had a funky delivery and a 80 mph fastball. I don't think Babe Ruth is going to be too impressed by that poo poo. Intangibles Dreaming of a Red October (PAR) The Sun Never Sets on the Burma Imperialists! (BUR) Best in the World! (SXE) Cheaters Always Prosper! (POR)  The Vae Victis Division has always been solid, even if it has never had one of its members reach the Super-League Finals, let alone win a championship. Still, they did send three teams to the playoffs last season, a feat that will never be repeated...because there aren't any wildcards anymore. In all likelihood, that means the lone playoff spot for the division will come down to the Rockford Losers and Florida Oranges, each of whom has reached the playoffs for two straight seasons. The Old Hoss Radbourns are pursuing a noble experiment in not using any starting pitchers, but the Super-League is not really conducive to experimentation of that nature, and it will probably end horribly for them. Also, you've got the "other" Corporate Team, the Bearers. I'd have higher hopes from them, but Bruzer is a part-owner. Catcher 1. '06 Joe Mauer (FLO) 2. '79 Ted Simmons (STP) 3. '65 Joe Torre/'04 Victor Martinez (ROC) 4. '97 Jorge Posada (OLD) All of these catchers are hitters first, catchers second. Mauer is the best hitter and defender of the lot, and has always been solid enough for the Oranges. Ted Simmons in '79 was a pretty shaky defender, and his hitting stats aren't going to blow you away. Torre/Martinez are two guys who were moved away from being catcher before the midpoint of their careers, which is telling. Jorge Posada has almost always disappointed in the Super-League. First Baseman 1. '93 Frank Thomas (ROC) 2. '71 Willie McCovey (STP) 3. '39 Jimmie Foxx (OLD) 4. '06 Justin Morneau (FLO) Thomas could outhit any god in '93-'94, which, of course, is why Zeus himself caused the 1994 strike in response to Thomas' great hitting. Willie McCovey was probably as good, but the hitting numbers in those times were different, so he doesn't look nearly as great as Thomas, though he was about as good over his career. Jimmie Foxx is getting old by '39, but he had his uses. Justin Morneau had a couple of good years in his career, and then his brains got scrambled. Second Baseman 1. '05 Nap Lajoie (FLO) 2. '28 Frankie Frisch (ROC) 3. '85 Ryne Sandberg (OLD) 4. '91 Craig Biggio (STP) Greatness in all four spots. Lajoie is the best hitter. Frisich is almost as good a hitter and a better fielder. Sandberg has good power and the best defense of the lot (since he played entirely in the era of double plays), and Craig Biggio would become great, but didn't really know how to play second base in 1991. Third Baseman 1. '78 Mike Schmidt (OLD) 2. '07 Albert Pujols (FLO) 3. '43 Stan Hack (STP) 4. '07 Kevin Youkilis (ROC) Okay, here's the thing. Pujols is a way better hitter than Schmidt, especially in Mogul's world. The problem is that Pujols isn't really a third baseman, not in 2007, and Mike Schmidt was a great defender at third, so I put him ahead of Pujols. Stan Hack and Kevin Youkilis are both third basemen that get on base a whole lot. Youk has more home run power, but Hack is a significantly better fielder, and Youk isn't so great a power hitter than his shaky defense doesn't drag him down. Shortstop 1. '97 Derek Jeter (OLD) 2. '86 Alan Trammell (FLO) 3. '34 Joe Cronin (ROC) 4. '34 Luke Appling (STP) I don't like Jeter, but a guy who hits .300 with doubles power at shortstop in the Super-League has his uses. Trammell isn't the hitter that Jeter is, and Mogul (wrongly) doesn't seem him as much better of a hitter. Cronin was slowing down a bit by '34, so he's not a great defender, but he's still a good hitter. Luke Appling is a single hitter. That's not bad, but it might not be good enough. Left Fielder 1. Tris Speaker is kind of wasted in left, but he's still going to probably hit .320, so you can live with that. Al Simmons is another great bat, though I think that Speaker is a bit better. Of course, if Simmons can ring up some home runs, he might be better than Speaker. Old Bobby Murcer is going to try. He's really, really going to try. Center Fielder 1. '?? Oscar Charleston (ROC) 2. '90 Ken Griffey (FLO) 3. '71 Willie Mays (STP) 4. '87 Eric Davis (OLD) Charleston is an all-time great and is going to be awesome as long as I'm running the league. Accept it. Ken Griffey is to young. Willie Mays is too old. Eric Davis is just as erratic in the Super-League as he was in real life. Right Fielder 1. '64 Frank Robinson (ROC) 2. '04 Lance Berkman/'71 Bobby Bonds (STP) 3. '65 Roberto Clemente (OLD) 4. '76 Rusty Staub (FLO) Robinson is pretty clearly the best player here, since he's the best hitter and a decent fielder. Berkman/Bonds is interesting, even if it's a platoon that's going to strike out 200 times. It does have great power, though. Roberto Clemente hits for contact and is a brilliant right fielder, if only he drew more walks. Rusty Staub is just happy to be here. SP1 1. '61 Don Drysdale (ROC) 2. '71 Juan Marichal (STP) 3. '05 Cy Falkenberg (FLO) 4. '65 Wilbur Wood (OLD) Drysdale's still fresh, whereas Marichal has just spent a decade pitching 250-300 innings a year. Falkenberg has had his moments, but isn't really much better than high-class filler. Wilbur Wood isn't really a starter, at least not in '65. SP2 1. '71 Tom Seaver (ROC) 2. '06 Mordecai Brown (STP) 3. '90 Bob Welch (FLO) 4. '83 Dan Quisenberry (OLD) Seaver was the best pitcher of his era, and one of the greatest of all time, even if his combination of power and control has never quite paid off the way it should in the Super-League. Brown needs a good defense behind him to be great, and I don't know that the Bearers really have that kind of defense. Bob Welch is Bob Welch, some power, some control, can help a team with good hitting. Dan Quisenberry isn't really a starter. SP3 1. '?? Satchel Paige (ROC) 2. '06 Johan Santana (FLO) 3. '71 Gaylord Perry (STP) 4. '85 Dennis Eckersley (OLD) Satchel Paige may have been the greatest pitcher of all time. I personally lean to Walter Johnson being better, but Paige is definitely in the discussion. Johan Santana might be good, might be bad, but it's hard to predict how good or bad he'll be until the season starts. Dennis Eckersley was actually a starter in 1985, but he wasn't a good starter, as his arm couldn't really take the strain of pitching that many innings by that point in his career. SP4 1. '71 Nolan Ryan (ROC) 2. '34 Ted Lyons (STP) 3. '12 Stan Coveleski (FLO) 4. '77 Bruce Sutter (OLD) Nolan Ryan is Nolan Ryan is Nolan Ryan is Nolan Ryan. Ted Lyons is a knuckleballer, and thus is always a bit risky. That said, St. Paul is cold, the Bearers' stadium is reasonably spacious, so he might have a chance. Coveleski is a young spitballer. I have no idea how that's going to work out, but I'm not optimistic. Bruce Sutter isn't really a starter, and was fragile even by reliever standards. Closer 1. '97 Mariano Rivera (OLD) 2. '84 Dennis Eckersley (FLO) 3. '01 John Smoltz (ROC) 4. '86 Bruce Sutter (STP) Rivera is probably the best closer of all-time, so I guess he goes first here. Eck is solid, but doesn't have anything like Rivera's cutter. John Smoltz did great work for the Losers last year, but I worry about his durability. '86 Sutter is basically done as a player. Also, I'd just to reiterate how much bullshit it is that Sutter went into the Hall as a Cardinal. He spent more time with the Cubs, he was a better pitcher with the Cubs, and he learned his splitter in the Cubs' farm system. It's total bullshit, man. In a nutshell I have power hitters so I should move in the walls, but my pitching isn't good enough to last in slugfests, so I should bring in groundball pitchers except my infield defense is awful and that would lead to smallball slugfests, so I should go big outfield and flyball pitchers because my fielders aren't terrible out there but that mitigates my power hitting...
