Is apple still signing both the 5.x and 6.0 firmwares? As in, is it possible to go back and forth at this very moment? Kind of want to try 6.0 but then go back to 5.x for my transit map support.

Usually I have had zero problems before, but I am pulling my hair out now! I cannot downgrade to 5.1.1 an have tried a lot of methods I found online. I was getting error 11 now it is 1600. Any one have any resources I should check out? Also, when I try to boot tethered, redsn0w hangs on "waiting for reboot" so I'm not sure if it booted correctly since I cannot connect SSH. I'd rather figure out to downgrade, but if there is a simple solution to my SSH dilemma I'd be open to forget about downgrading. I've check with iTools and it is showing a jail broken file system so that seems promising. Also I used WinSCP to try to SSH and it ether times out or "server unexpectedly closed network connection" Meskalade fucked around with this message at 03:23 on Sep 21, 2012 |

So did you upgrade to 6, and then go back down to 5.1.1 and trying to jailbreak it? With a vanilla jailbreak, SSH isn't installed by default so you won't be able to SSH.

The genius took it to the back, witnessed the problem it had and then gave me a new one. Maybe they don't care. This isn't true. I've gone in to get my phone serviced and been denied service because "any of my problems could be directly connected to the jailbreak". They refused to even look at it until I restored it to factory settings. On this trip, I did that and then they promptly told me they would not replace my phone anyway... so restore and backup your phone before getting it serviced.

Asked this a few pages ago and didn't get a response so I will try again. I'm using Google Voice with my JB and I want to use custom SMS tones that I DL through Cydia and enable through Winterboard. But nothing I do seems to override the default Tri-tone SMS sound...not changing the text sound in settings (though I hear the right one there), and not going in GV into into a specific contact's default text sound and changing that to the corresponding one in GV itself. This seems like a simple problem but it's more frustrating than it looks. Anyone who can shed some light on this for me I'd appreciate it.

Not an Apple store, but the last time I had my iPhone looked at it was at an AT&T store. I mentioned hearing about SIM card and SMS issues with other people that had an iPhone 4S, and I was thinking maybe my issue of "sending an SMS always fails if I'm receiving an SMS at the exact same time" was due to my SIM card. So I handed my phone to the guy, and he commented on my "Mario mushroom" instead of the AT&T carrier logo (using Zeppelin). He thought it was cute, and he didn't blame my problems on a jailbreak. He simply typed in my info and swapped SIM cards for me. I would NOT go to an Apple store with a jailbroken device, though. They're usually really busy, and you have to make an appointment. Even with an appointment, you may still end up waiting a long time. Why risk getting turned away just because you end up with the one guy that blames jailbreaks? Just go in with a "clean" phone.

There are macbooks and ipod cables littering every apple store I've been to. If someone gives you crap, sit down and commandeer one of the computers and wipe your device. Anecdotal obviously but you kind of have to be braindead to mention that you have a jailbreak to official reps if you're coming to them with a problem.

But ultimately if you're going in hoping for / expecting a phone swap there's no reason to have not done a full restore to factory settings first. Just saying that you're better off restoring rather than going through that hassle because not every Apple Store employee is going to "not care".

All that means is they got it working with a dev account, it's not even just a "we have to tidy it up before release", they might not have the exploit they need to release it to the general public

I have a question. I jailbroke my iphone 4s a while back following all the instructions exactly: backing up my phone, doing the jailbreak, ~fin~. I recently wiped my Windows machine and it had all my backups on it (I assume). I would really like to try out ios6 since jailbreaking was fun, but didn't really offer much functionality that would warrant me staying on it. Here's the question: Can I backup my jailbroken phone somehow to save my contacts and such and upgrade to ios6? I'm mostly concerned about the contacts since a good bit of them are business contacts and it would take entirely too long to write them down by hand.

"Unknown error" problem trying to install 5.1.1 from 4.3.2. I've got an iPhone 4 (AT&T), running jailbroken 4.3.2. I'd like to upgrade to 5.1.1 because increasing numbers of apps require iOS 5. I downloaded the 5.1.1 from jailbreakmatrix (file came down as "iPhone3,1_5.1.1_9B206_Restore.zip"). I renamed the extension from ".zip" to ".ipsw", DFU'ed the phone, shift-clicked "Restore" in iTunes, and got a message along the lines of "the phone could not be restored because an unknown error occurred". Does this mean that Apple is no longer signing 5.1.1 and I have to get sn0wbreeze to install it? (I have my shsh blobs saved.) Or is there something else I'm doing wrong?

I've got 5.1.1 blobs saved for my iPhone 4 in Cydia and locally. When I start up Tiny Umbrella's server and try to option restore to 5.1.1, I get the error that I can't install this version. What gives? I've manually pointed my hosts at Cydia and Tiny Umbrella and still not luck. I'm positive i have the blobs, since I've been saving them religiously since day one on this device. Any ideas?

My poor little 3GS is probably on its last legs but I'm reluctant to upgrade until the 5 is JBed (I can wait). Meanwhile, I'd like to get rid of a lot of the slowdowns occuring on it. I heard that many people are having their phone respond much faster by replacing SBSettings with NCsettings. I also hear the main culprit is Activator but it doesn't seem like I can get rid of just Activator alone without losing Lockinfo and SBsettings other features (status bar options and hide icons is nice). Any tips for improving performance? Aside from lockinfo and NCsettings, I'm running it rather barebones and the only way to make it bearable is through frequent restarts to clear the memory. I end up with around 100MB free on a fresh restart and it starts seriously slowing down around 20MB free.

Feenix posted:Yes. It most likely will. Not saying it will be out by the end of the weekend or anything, but is there really anything to indicate it will take literal months for a public release? How long does it usually take from initial break to public release? You'd have to figure this would be the most anticipated jailbreak ever. I'd think they'd probably work to get it out as soon as possible.

The jailbreak scene dudes always have the newest iPhones jailbroken after a day. I'm pretty sure it happened for the 4S too but we still had to wait months for a public release.

A registered developer with the correct tools (both software and possibly even hardware) can jailbreak their device relatively quickly. That's where the "quickness" of the jailbreak ends. They cannot just release the jailbreak instructions. It most likely requires A) developer access, and B) knowledge of an iOS exploit. There are already known iOS 6 Safari exploits that allow a user to gently caress with a 4S or 5. The jailbreak community doesn't mind sharing because of (A), but they will not publicly release (B). Not yet, at least, as Apple will surely patch it out before the correct, "user-friendly" tools are released by the jailbreak community. The jailbreak of the iPhone 5 may involve the Safari exploit along with developer access. To make it user-friendly, a work-around has to be made to get around needing developer access. With the A5/A5X devices, the jailbreak involved something like 7 steps. Modifying backup files, getting the device to restore the modified files (to load the program without developer access), triggering a VPN exploit that allowed the program to run, etc. Think of the old "Mouse Trap" board game. There was no direct "attack" method, so a series of complex procedures was used to jailbreak. It took *months* to find a way into A5 devices, and for all of 5.x it was still just exploits from VPN to do it. Even then, issues with icon corruption were never fixed.
