Going to Vancouver tomorrow to visit a friend. FALL BREAK 2K12!!!

I'm gonna drink Cantillon till my stomach lining wears thin!

I could possibly pick up some bottles (Classic Gueuze, Kriek, and Rose) for some of you guys... If you'd pay shipping I'd send them to you thru fedex for what I paid plus maybe a couple extra bucks for the trouble of bringing them back. Send me a message if interested or e-mail at <redacted>. Mods if this is frowned upon let me know and I'll edit my post.

I'm probably pretty late to this, but I picked up some Lagunitas Daytime IPA this weekend while passing through MA and I'm really impressed by this beer. Does anyone know what hop combo they put in this? I tried looking it up on their site, but they have what is probably one of the worst designed sites of any large scale beer company ever.

Hood River Hops Fest is Saturday. 37 breweries pouring 51 fresh hop beers. The line-up: http://www.newschoolbeer.com/2012/09/hood-river-hops-fest-brewery-beer-list.html

I don't think I'm going to have 2 brain cells left to rub together on Sunday.

Picked up Duck Rabbit Rabid Duck Imperial Stout tonight. It tastes unlike any other imperial I've ever had. Almost sour. Is this normal? I read some stuff about Duck Rabbit having infection issues, but to be honest, I have no idea what it means for a beer to be infected or even what to look for in an infected beer. I'm also probably just overreacting to a different taste in a new beer. Other than that, it's not terrible.

where did you buy it? if it has a sour, oddly fruity taste to it, you probably got some infected beer. a friend of mine sent me two infected six-packs a while back and DR has been pretty loving lovely about responding to messages, so talk to the store if that's the case.

I got it at a local place in northeast Georgia. It does have that fruity, sour taste. I will feel like a tool bringing it back in if I'm not 100% sure it's infected. They're really nice folks though, so I assume they'd be understanding?

No not Otto, I thought that was mediocre, I mean Otto in Oak, the bourbon barrel aged one, unless that's what you meant and just shortened it. Otto in Oak is one of my favorite beers of all time, every aspect of the beer, from the smoke to the dubble base is balanced extremely well with the bourbon.

Victory is in the process of aging something in red wine barrels now, can't loving wait.

That just sold me into going to Blind Tiger tomorrow. They have a ton of Victory on tap right now:

Tell me more about The Ale Apothecary. I found some basic information on brewery and the beers, but the details are really hazy. Looks like a cool idea, but it seems like a bit of a special club kind of a thing. Are they distributing beyond their beer club?

i think this year's entire batch of Rabid Duck was infected- the stuff that made it to VA (for the first time!) was, and the bottles my friend in NC bought me were, too. in fact, they had so many infection issues that they had to replace all the lines in their brewing equipment. so, yeah, bring it back to the store, they'll get credit from the distributor, no problem... unlike when your friend from out of state gives you beer and DR is really crappy about responding to the issue...

FBS finally came to stores around here and my most visited store sold out already, they had one 4 pack for me and that's it. Funny thing though is that Bitches Brew was on the shelves. FBS is excellent though the coffee is very prominent with a nice chocolate backing, super good.

If you're not familiar with Victory, all of their beer is really good, I haven't had a bad beer by them by any stretch. There's a lot of Victory beer on that list I've never seen, but definitely try the Otto in Oak and try the Carton brewing beer they have, they're a small NJ brewery making some noise in North Jersey.

Okay guys, I'm going to yield to temptation and shill for my buddy now because he deserves it.

Schuyler Schultz is a hell of a chef and a fan of great beer. He's partly responsible for me being interested in craft beer - when he lived in Vegas, he hosted beer dinners in his restaurant that brought in brewers we don't normally get in town. Lost Abbey, Bear Republic, and Alesmith were all featured at one time or another, and of all the beer dinners I've been to those three stand out due to the masterful pairing of beer and food. My first taste of a sour beer (2008 Red Poppy) was at his house, at a Christmas party. In short he's an inspiring guy to be around, deeply knowledgeable about flavor and food, and one of my favorite people to drink with. He lives in San Diego now, and I miss his cooking and his company.

He's written a book that just came out: Beer, Food, and Flavor: A Guide to Tasting, Pairing, and the Culture of Craft Beer. While doing research for the book, Schuyler had what I think is safe to call unprecedented access to a huge number of American brewers, mostly in face-to-face interviews. What's resulted is a book that serves as a good introduction for beer newbies while having something for us experienced snobs as well. I got to preview a bit of the Philosophy of Brewing chapter and found it pretty drat fascinating.

Anyhow, if you've got some cash and want a good coffee table beer book, this one's a good candidate. He'll be at GABF this year doing book signings. I strongly recommend anyone going say hi and chat with him a while. He's a good conversationalist and deeply knowledgeable about everything consumable.

In unrelated news, on Wednesday night I got to try both Bourbon County Bramble Stout and KBS. It was a good night, but would be better if I had any chance to get those two again.

Bramble disappointed me, though I had a just-bottled fresh one and it was served too cold (felt almost at ice-forming temperature). I've got one that I'll sit on for a few years and hopefully will mellow a little.

Opened my Tart of Darkness last night. Good, but definitely not worth the extra money of Madrugada Obscura, which I liked more and is 2/3 the price.

Apparently NH will never see Breakfast Stout because our liquor commission thinks the label art is marketing to toddlers or something.

I really liked it too, you're not alone. The BCS base showed through well, with just a bit of red fruit to liven things up. I haven't tried any other variants yet (our distribution rep says it's 50/50 if we'll get any regular BCS even with the increased production), but I enjoyed Bramble and would probably buy it if I could.

Definitely "the worst." But that just means it's not-quite-mind-blowing.

Someone on craigslist right now is selling a huge '07-'12 BCS vertical (including Rare, Bramble, and '10 Coffee). I'm pretty sure it's someone I've dealt with before and while I think the price is right for what you get, I really don't have $500 to spend on it.

Texas did not allow Double Bastard to be sold at first because the long rambling description in the back of the bottle had the word "masturbatory" in it. (To refer to other beers, no less.)

The problem for me is that Founders just started showing up in my state within the last couple months so now whenever any special release beers come out they fly off the shelves. Breakfast Stout literally lasted less than 24 hours in my entire city before it was gone for good.

Fantastic, I loved this beer. Speaking of Founders, is anyone having trouble getting FBS this year compared to last year? Last year it was on the shelves everywhere, now every store is putting it in the back. Surprisingly Bitches Brew is everywhere on the shelves, I guess they brewed a lot more this year. I was able to get 4 bottles and could easily get more.

I'm pretty sure this is common for FBS. The first couple of batches to hit the shelves fly off, then by the time the later ones come around, they'll sit longer. Not likely to find last years still around or anything but it shouldn't be hard over the next couple months to get your hands on some. I bought two more 4-packs last night because I think it might be my girlfriend's favorite beer now.

A buddy bought every pack he saw last year. A few months later, I was over by him and opened his beer fridge and found he had probably 2 cases worth there. He just told me he finished his last non-cellared one a couple weeks ago. Basically, it was his go-to beer for almost a year.
