I think it's best you go in blind. But if you're even slightly immature and like crude jokes watch it. It's pretty much "Curb your Enthusiasm" (as in awkward situations) but with British kids and a lot more sex jokes .

It's only 2 seasons. They made a movie last year. It's not as good as the show but still good.

Not sure how long it's been up but I just noticed Donnie Darko is on netflix

I'm sure someone has already mentioned it, but The League is an amazing show, and the first two seasons of it are on Netflix. It's a semi-scripted show about a fantasy football league and stars Paul Scheer and Jon Lajoie.

It is a great show!

The first half of the season is truly awful. They spent the whole time doing pretty much absolutely nothing, or getting the little boy out of trouble with zombies. The second half of the season definitely got better though, and I'm excited for the season three premiere which is soon I imagine.

October 14th, actually. This season's going to be even longer than the second one (16 episodes rather than 13), which could either be good or bad.

There was a change of management midseason which resulted in better pacing; overall season two is much better than season one. Even with a reduced budget there are more zombies but it's still a drama though so don't go in expecting RAWRRRR every five seconds.

I'll back him up on this. Tall Man has seemed pretty divisve among people, but I thought it brilliantly played with a few different horror scenarios and then turned out to not even really be a horror film

If nothing else, go ahead and enjoy a really beautifully directed film. Great use of locations and Jessica Biel is pretty good in it as well.

Wow, so alot of mixed messages on that. I'll probably watch it at some point, but it doesn't seem like a right now, you have to see, kind of thing.

Anyways, I watched The House of The Devil last night. It wasn't scary, but I really liked that it was such a homage to 1980's horror films. Even the directing and the camera used felt like it. It was pretty fun, didn't overstay it's welcome. It was about 70 minutes of slow build up for a great payoff in the last 10 minutes.

re: The Walking Dead. It's the kind of show where if you're on the fence about it, you probably won't like it. It's not exceptionally good drama, nor compelling horror, nor action; but it's still better than most prime-time network television.

What follows is a discussion about the ending of "The Grey" from a few pages back.

I think Liam survives. Or at least took the wolf down with him.

Near the beginning of the movie, before the plane crash, Liam shoots a wolf with his rifle. He walks up to it and the wolf is still breathing. There is a particular shot where they show the Wolf's chest heave up and down. The exact same shot -- same camera angle -- wolf's chest heaving -- precisely the same is used at the end with the black wolf's chest.

I loved the movie. All the analogues were drawn between the wolf pack and the group of humans were great. My favorite part was when they sprinted into the woods for the first time and started a fire, the group hears the wolfs fighting and Liam says "the Alpha put down a challenger." Then Liam beats up the pessimist/realist. The Alpha sure did put him down!

I really loved the movie. If you didn't watch it before, watch it now!

It really isn't, though I'll admit it fills a niche. And some of the last episodes do have pretty good action at least, and there can be some all right horror in there too. The drama sucks, though, as the characters are for the most part horrible.

That isn't exactly what I wrote, what I meant was that by definition it is a horror except it's really mostly drama which will be off-putting to many horror fans. The drama is good but poor pacing has been very detrimental. There isn't enough action to appeal to someone looking for mindless fun. It is a show that doesn't excel at any one thing but is good (not great) at several things. What it does have are zombies (for zombie nerds like me), main characters who are not safe, morally ambiguous main characters, and the story isn't ruled by cosmic justice. It's better than most network television because most network television is built with one dimensional characters who march down well trodden storylines; frankly network prime-time writing is generally pretty lazy.

It's definitely faster paced and a bit more darkly comedic, instead of the slow burn of House of the Devil, but I very much enjoyed it. I think Ti West is really honing his craft a bit, and I can't wait to see his segment in V/H/S.

It is a great show!

It also has Mark Duplass, Mumblecore's poster boy. He's hilarious in it. The whole show is great- I have zero interest in football/fantasy football but the writing is so good that I still find myself drawn into the stories. I'm waiting for season 3 to be up there, the first or second episode has Seth Rogen playing a pornographer and...poo poo gets very funny.

Re: Walking Dead. Season one is great and Season Two was good when it wasn't piling on melodrama left-and-right. The writers from season one all got axed and it shows- Sesaon 2 has some truly awful dialogue and the acting goes beyond charmingly bad at some points. And steer away if you want accuracey to the comics- the ENTIRE second season just draws out a story arc from the comics that literally only lasted about two issues. At the same time, it's obvious that they want the show to only be inspired by the comic, which is fine with me. I think overall what they do with it is cool, and if Season 3 takes the same tone as the story arc it's addressing from the comics poo poo is going to get gory

I just watched Lake Mungo after having it on my queue for a long time, and I found it an incredibly moving film. Even though I guess it's a ghost story, there's really only maybe one scare in the entire thing. It's just this great meditation on loneliness and human relationships and guilt and loss, and the whole things suffused with melancholy instead of dread.

I think part of it is that I find the idea of shared experiences that take place outside of the regular flow of time to be really sublime and, when one of the participants is dead, tragic and compelling. I just kept thinking about how things might have been different if Alice had told her parents about the dreams she was having and the premonitions of her own death. Her parents are so sad because they realize after she's dead that they didn't know her at all, and they long for some kind of connection with her, but they don't know enough to realize that their visions of her are events she experienced as dreams or visions while she was alive. Even if they couldn't have saved her, they would have known after she was dead what was happening and maybe reacted differently. This is mostly just an emotional response, but it's so sad that Alice had a vision of standing before her parents' bed feeling sad and alone and remembers her mother reacting in terror and further alienating her--and then when her mother experienced that same vision after Alice died, she didn't know what she was seeing and so reacted in terror and retroactively caused her daughter to suffer. It's just so tragic her mother and her father had a huge missed opportunity to speak to her, which would in turn have affected how she thought of them in the months leading up to her death. Instead they just turn away and miss the rest of the closing window of opportunity to speak to her during one of her remaining visions.

I don't know how clear that was, but I guess I'm really struck by the idea that Alice and her parents had this chance to have some weird connection outside of the normal relationship of cause and effect--one that would have lessened both their terrible burdens--but it ended up hurting them all more because Alice and her parents were too distant from each other. I kind react the same way to the scene in Fire Walk with Me where Laura reveals that she had Cooper's dream years before he did, while she was still alive and could have been saved.

I would recommend the Terra Nova TV series for similar punishing experience.

The Walking Dead is good example of show that went downhill fast from a brilliant pilot episode/somewhat decent follow-up episodes to bland mediocrity.

If anything it made me appreciate the lurid Spartacus series even more by showing happens when you have piles of episodes with only a glacier like advance for the plot or character development.

Laura's death in Twin Peaks mixes grief and regret in the same way, for sure. Both Alice and Laura have secret lives that resulted from them feeling cut off from everyone they loved (or I guess so in Alice's case), and that also left everyone around them with a crazy need to make their lives into cause-and-effect stories that make sense.

I guess a big narrative difference for me is that Laura's life did get put into a linear narrative that reconciled all the known facts, and nobody's really interested in that part of the story (but I like it, and it showed that Sheryl Lee is a good actor).

One thing I love about the movie is how even in the footage they do have of Alice, she's an enigma. In every way she haunts the film.
