Is anybody else having problems with Netflix on an ATV3 after the 5.1 update? Everything seems to be playing fine, but it doesn't keep track of my progress. It's a little weird, but when I go back into the episode list for whatever TV series I'm watching it acts like I didn't watch the episode I just finished and it wants to play it again. If I go to the Netflix site it shows the progress bar as if I started the episode, but it's completely empty.

I tried a reset and it's still happening, so I'm wondering if this is a problem with the Apple TV or something on Netflix's end.

Hm, that happened to me but I didn't think much of it since I had started watching it on my ATV2 and then went off to watch it on my ATV3 and assumed it was that.

So I just got an Apple TV to go along with my new iPhone. It's really slick looking, even though there are some apps it should have but doesn't (HBO Go, Cinemax Go, Showtime Anytime, etc.). Does anyone know if there are currently any plans on bringing any of those to Apple TV, or is it just a kind of abandoned, forgotten piece of hardware at this point?

The answers are nobody knows and no. It is definitely not abandoned, but new channels/apps just sort of show up when they show up. There isn't really any advanced notice.

I'll just repost my answer to this same question when it was posed a few pages back.

I'd say it'll probably happen only if Apple can convince the TV Studios/Hollywood to allow them to make their AppleTV TV Set/Cable box/whatever it is. It's the thing that Steve Jobs was quoted as saying he finally cracked [figuring out how to make streaming tv and regular tv work together].

However, rumors and stories have surfaced that the networks/studios aren't hopping on board as quickly or easily as Apple would like (big surprise).

If it does finally happen, I'd expect to see the AppleTV platform grow with apps (the NBC AppleTV app, the AMC app, etc).

What I'd really like is just the Comcast/Xfinity app on there. You already have to be a cable subscriber to use it, and it's out on all the mobile devices and such, as well as having a browser based equivalent. If I had that I could deal with the Go/Anytime apps not being up because most of that functionality is in the Xfinity thing already. I also don't see how Roku and Boxee have these apps when Apple doesn't, that's the part that baffles me.

Roku and Boxee are seemingly trying to get every app they can possibly manage, which does not seem to be Apple's approach.

This is true, and I don't really need to see a CNN specific app or anything on Apple TV. Hell, I think the Wall Street Journal one is a bit specific and out of place to tell you the truth. But the 3 for HBO, Showtime, and Cinemax seem like pretty major selling points. Well, maybe not Cinemax, because who actually gives a poo poo about terrible soft core porn in this day and age, which Cinemax seems to have fully embraced. But at the very least HBO Go seems like kind of a must have. It's also weird that there's no PS3 app for it, but that may be because of some kind of HBO/Microsoft deal on the console side of things. I can see stuff like Amazon Instant Video not being on there due to it being a direct competitor with iTunes and all, but yeah...just seems weird to me that HBO and the others aren't there in some form.

On a non-ranty/bitchy thing, I messed with it a bit last night, and I really enjoy the user experience so far. It's fast, functional, and really slick. It's also the best quality I've ever seen Hulu look, compared to the Xbox/PS3 apps and the website. I'm really digging it so far.

Apple wants their cut. Simple as that. Comcast isn't about to let Apple get any of their subscriber money (or cut into their business model).

While I don't argue that Apple wants their cut, how exactly are they making money off of the other apps on there? MLB.tv? NBA League Pass? If I'm already a subscriber and use the aTV app to watch the games, how does Apple make any money?

At least one big reason is that Apple wants the viewer to be *their* customers, not the cable company's. And Apple is not going to give other companies any information about subscribers. It's the same deal as newspapers and magazines not wanting to use the App Store because customer demographics are hugely valuable (both directly and indirectly) to them. Whatever other revenue sharing deals Apple may have worked out, I absolutely respect their position on customer privacy.

If you're already a customer, I would guess they don't make anything, but I'm pretty sure you can sign up for all these services directly from the Apple TV and Apple certainly gets a cut from that.

This is correct. If you become a subscriber via the app, Apple gets their cut.

Since updating my ATV3 to 5.1, MLB.tv hasn't worked at all. Anyone else seeing this?

Edit: I posted a thread about this in the Apple Discussion Forums. Someone figured out that disconnecting the Ethernet cable and switching to Wifi solved the problem. An Apple employee has chimed in and is gathering info to solve the problem. I'd expect 5.1.1 to not be too far away. If Wifi isn't an option for you, don't update.

Here's a link to the forum thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19750621#19750621

Anyone have an update on this issue? I just spent three hours trying to figure out why Itunes Match no longer found anything on my AppleTV. WiFi works alright most of the time, but I really want to connect to my ethernet again.

I'm having the ethernet problem, and I just thought Apple's servers were hosed. Mine was that Photostream wasn't loading. Switching to Wifi made it magically start working again.

At the bottom of that thread there's an apple dude asking people to send him info about their routers and stuff, I'm definitely going to send mine in to help in fixing this.

This is how my Rdio account became worthwhile again. A native app would be better, but streaming it from my phone works well enough.

This is a really dumb question, but I haven't messed around with it that much so I'm going to ask anyway: How exactly does Airplay for apps work? Does the app have to support it, and if it does, is it just in a menu somewhere to push it out that way?

For the ones I've tried you can click a button to change sources if you're on the same network as an ATV. You just switch sources and it pops up on ATV.

The app does have to support this.

On the other hand with iPad2 you can "mirror" the whole thing so the actual screen pops up on the TV - you can use this for apps that don't have proper airplay support but it's laggy and ugly.

It does work okay for stuff you don't need to interact with too much tho, like media apps.

If anyone was having trouble with the ethernet connection after the last update, try it again. Itunes Match for the last couple of days was sort of messed up (constantly stuck on the "we are setting up match, it might take a couple of minutes" screen), so I unplugged everything for about an hour and then reconnected with the ethernet cable just to see what was going on.

So far everything seems to be working normal again. I never did hear back from the Apple guy asking for information or another support person I contacted, so I have no idea what was fixed, if anything. I do know that the hard reset wasn't enabling my ethernet ability before, but seemed to work now, so maybe it will work for other people who had the same problem.

Is there any sort of ETA on a fix for Hulu Plus for the ATV3? I gather the most recent update broke it. I just got my Apple TV the day of the patch, and Hulu Plus right after, but I've never been able to get it to work. This is awesome, but my parental controls don't give me the options for NHL, MLB, NBA, or WSJ Live. I'd like those gone too. It'd be nice to be able to move the tiles too since it seems like hiding the icons doesn't cause them to shift up. My top row only has 2 icons (Computers and Settings), so it'd be great to be able to have Netflix and XBMC up there too since it's just wasted space now.
