In the Golgo 13 episode the crew went to an arcade called JJ Club 100 and when Arino was playing the trackball game something was mentioned about how the arcade is on a "timed freeplay model." Just curious how that works exactly. I assume you pay a fee when you arrive and you receive a card you can scan that counts down how much time you have left to play? Kind of like an American casino?

I like that concept more than just plugging coins in. Surprised I've never seen something similar in the states.

I had to think for awhile to why this seems so natural to me. Then I realized the announcer in just about every Gradius game went 'OPTION' every time you activated one :v:

There's an arcade I love in Fairfield, Ohio called Arcade Legacy that does this except to the extreme. You pay 10 bucks to get in and everything is set to free play. It is the finest place. It sounds like it wouldn't be profitable, but the owner makes up for it through constant fighter tournaments, used games/DVD sales, beverage sales, and other oddities. It's been open for a few years now and I hope it stays that way :D

Sometimes it's "Multiple" (the announcer says "Multiple" in Salamander/Life Force and they changed it to Multiple in the US version of Gradius V for some reason)

I was turning this over in my mind and I imagine a place like that would stand to profit more than a traditional arcade. It's a much more attractive offer than the other model and I imagine most people don't spend more than 5 bucks when they pop into an arcade these days anyway. And let's be honest, that 5 bucks won't get you anything but a few minutes of play time and a sense of being ripped off since today's machines are designed to cost you the maximum amount of money for the smallest amount of play time possible. Plus, there's an upside to keeping customers inside your store since a busy leisure area is much more attractive to someone walking by. When you pass an arcade that's full of flashing lights and colors but no one is inside having any fun, it's just depressing as hell.

Went to a tourist town recently (Gatlinburg, TN) which had a couple of arcades and every single one of them reminded me why I haven't been to an arcade in ages. Most everything is a new age claw-macine rip off or a ticket dispenser and the actual video games cost a fortune for what you get out of them. It's not fun anymore because you feel guilty after you lose and you realize you wasted a dollar on a machine that was fun for maybe a minute. I would love to be able to pay a flat fee to just play games and hang out with my friends until we got bored instead of feeling pressured not to waste the couple of bucks I brought with me.

Hey fellow Arcade Legacy visitor! It's also profitable because the owners of the mall he's in paid him to move there and cut him a huge deal on the rent so that he's paying less for twice the space of his old location. That's what happens when you're in a dead mall and desperate for anything to bring people in. Works out great for him because once you know about it you'll follow him anywhere!

This is exactly how Gameworks works (wish they hadn't closed the one in Vegas :(). Something like $30 gets you a card that works for the next two hours realtime. It was a pretty great system, I thought, considering that included $2 monstrosities like that Star Wars arcade game.

Oh dang Arcade Legacy dude in the GCCX thread what is going on here. Yeah, the deal he got on the current spot in the mall is phenomenal. I miss that place so much :( But I'm ACROSS THE SEA now so not much I can do about it. Luckily, arcades in Japan are pretty awesome as far as value/selection, but... they definitely don't have that community feel.

(p.s. tell jesse he needs to see if he can hunt down a japan-style UFO catcher, i am BEYOND ADDICTED to these things)

also hey how 'bout all these extras!! It's strangely satisfying to just plop down and watch nothing but tamages and stuff with no challenge in between. I thought it might feel kind of empty, but I've been pleasantly surprised. Thanks as always, SAGCCX Heroes!!!

Fire N Ice is one of my favorite NES games of all time. He might play it as it is a sequel to Solomon's Key. The Fire part makes me skeptical of this being the right guess. I would love to see Fire N Ice as it is a great puzzler and I love watching Arino challenge puzzlers and his claim to be good at them.

I'm watching the DVD version of the Ninja Gaiden II episode and noticed something. When Ryu gets phantom doubles, the first one looks odd and grey and barely shows up on screen. The second one (when he has two) shows up properly and looks orange like it should. This didn't happen in ShinYaguchi's initial fansub so I assume it's an oddity with the DVD encoding?

I've noticed stuff like this in other episodes subbed by the team. I think it might be that the video frame rates are often lower than the game's, so graphical weirdness shows up. Sometimes sprites outright disappear. Another example might be this incredibly slow spinning blade. No wonder all her can do is give out a halfhearted "Ohhhh..."

At the Celebration Station chain, which is the closest thing to a traditional arcade near me, they've switched over to "Player Cards" that, apparently, hold a balance you use on the arcade machine. I'd reckon it also holds your ticket count.

First, let's not pretend that "commercials as entertainment" is an exclusively American domain. Also, the only two other comedian gamers I can think of are Robin Williams and Dave Chappelle
