You know how milk gets kinda nasty if you leave it in the fridge too long? And how it'll get nasty real fast if you leave it on the counter all day? The first Laundry book is like that, but backwards. It starts sour and ends well. The second book has one of the best plot devices I've ever encountered in a book. It's very clever and well done. I was literally chortling when I figured it out--which I didn't do until about ten pages before it was revealed anyway. Yes, I chortle. Sue me.

The first book is pretty fun, if you like over-the-top gritty noir trappings. Remember the Max Payne games? The title character's inner monologue is just like that. I hated the second book. The third one was great but I didn't like the climax, which was a muddled mess. You'd think things would get more interesting when the main character goes to hell to assassinate his arch enemy, but instead the book got lost.

I agree with the Thomas hate. To be honest, even though I really like Harry as a character, Butcher isn't really good at characterization in general. This is especially obvious in Codex Alera; Tavi is a Shonen Jump protagonist except smart, Kitai is from the same anime as Tavi and voiced by Rie Kugimiya, Bernard and Amara become intolerably saccharine whenever they're "onscreen" together, and something feels off about Isana's internal monologue that I can't put my finger on.

Because Isana is a lying, conniving, backstabbing, horrible excuse for a person who deserves none of the happiness she receives. Her goody goody internal monologue is at direct odds with her actions. From her first chapter I felt she needed a good rear end kicking and I still felt that way at the end of the series.

I was re-watching the Story Board that Patrick Rothfuss does and he had Jim as a guest on the first one. During the video they are discussing real world research and started talking about how you have to try and remember all this information that seems useless at the time but can come in handy in the future. Jim mentions watching a show about a Greek god then mentioned the Spear of Destiny. With all the other artifacts from the Crucifixion and the events surrounding it in the story I don't know how I forgot about the weapon that actually killed Christ. I wonder when that will come into play. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52khu_YJAmo Edit: Actually I just read up some on the Spear of Destiny and it turns out they just stabbed him with it to make sure he was dead. I guess it might not play as big of a role as I thought. Clinton1011 fucked around with this message at 22:26 on Oct 5, 2012 |

I saw this on Kevin Hearne's Twitter feed:![]() At a book signing, someone brought him a package of smoked chicken and apple sausages to sign. If you haven't read the Iron Druid books, the Iron Druid in question gives his dog chicken and apple sausages pretty frequently, they are referenced a couple times per book.

I just did the bare minimum bit of research about that first chapter and the Cat Sith was believed to be the king of all cats in old Scotland including Kellas Cats, a hybrid of house cats and mountain lions, the likely basis of Malks. He was also believed to steal the souls of the dead, if they were not watched over before burial. I can't make a link because of ![]()

A bit of speculation about the preview chapter. At the end of the chapter Harry is heading to a celebration of Birth. How long as it been since he slept with Mab? Harry thinks he was in the comma for quite a few months and some time had passed between Harry's death and his soul going back to his body.
