That sounds like it would fit right in on Netsky's new album, and like his new album, I don't care for that remix too much. The Fred V & Grafix remix, on the other hand...

So I just picked up BSE's new album From The Shadows and I'm absolutely loving it. I had mixed feelings about their last album (Lights And Wires): it had some good tracks like Inpeak and Extraction but overall the album came across as being sort of experimental. With From The Shadows BSE have gone back to their roots and stylistically the album is much like Cruel & Unusual and Endangered Species. At the moment my favourite track has to be All Is Lost (BSE Feat. Thomas Oliver & Youthstar). The drop on that track is insane.

While we're on the subject of new albums here's a couple of my favourite bits from DRS' recent effort, titled (with tongue firmly in cheek) "I Don't Usually Like MC's But..." Count To Ten (feat. Enei) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm5gB3Yk9hI Enei's a bit hit and miss for me but this really hits the spot. Keep The Faith (feat. Calibre) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Dk50T033vg Standard Calibre fare. The album's fairly dark and gritty as a whole but it's well worth giving a listen.

I've only seen him feature on one track, High Contrast Feat. MC Dynamite - High Society, which in my opinion was terrible. Honestly one of his lines is "Fly to the moon / came back with a spoon"... IN OTHER NEWS the line up for the popular NYE gig in Western Australia, Origin, has been released: It's a pretty good line up and I'd love to see Chase & Status, Ed Rush, Dillinja, Sigma and Metrik however overall it seems a bit underwhelming compared to the line ups they had in 2011 and 2010. I am digging the change in venue and that it spans two days instead of just NYE. Belvior Ampitheatre where they've held it in previous years isn't exactly an easy place to get to/from so being able to camp out is cool.

After a long hiatus, Spor finally released some new tracks: Ziggurat https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SyQMBPpDXv4 Push Me, Pull You https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9TlfZneGkk I don't think it's nearly as good as some of his older tunes but it's great to see Jon Gooch returning to Spor after spending so much time on his Feed Me stuff. Hopefully we'll finally see a Spor album release in the near future after it was promised this past August. Even if it would contain mostly his unreleased stuff from the past, it would still be one hell of an album.

In his pre-Lifted Music days (2004-2006) he had several releases under Renegade Hardware, Barcode and Subtitles which were all a lot darker and, IMO, consistently good (Some examples would be Three Ravens (Barcode), Haywire (Renegade Hardware) and Powder Monkey (Subtitles)). Following the launch of Lifted Music with Chris Renegade in 2006 I've found Spor's releases have been a bit hit-and-miss. He still released a lot of great tracks in that time (The Supernova EP was excellent) but I've found some of them to bit a toned down and, for lack of a better word, generic. More recently I think there may have been somewhat of a falling out between Jon and Chris Renegade, based on some off-hand comments Chris made on the last Lifted Music podcast (Episode 19, 28/04). On the other hand I'm probably just mis-interpreting the whole situation...

I don't really listen to many D&B podcasts (And I really should, any general recommendations would be great) but you might like the Neosignal Podcast which is usually done by Phace and Misanthrop (Unfortunately their most recent release, Episode 5, is from back in April).

This may be a really inappropriate place to ask this question, but are there any DnB producers/artists that make sort of old school sounding drum and bass where the production is literally focused mostly on the drums and the sub bass? I try to listen to a lot of new Drum and Bass but I find that most of it sounds insanely aggressive when I really like to hear some more minimal poo poo.

I really want to get back (and back DJing clubs if I could) older styles like Matrix or older Ed Rush & Optical.

I can't really think of any artists that fit your description of purely drums and sub bass focused production (I'm someone else can). However if you want some more minimal/downtempo D&B check out Calibre, Krust, Roni Size / Reprazent (Specifically the album "New Forms") and Goldie's earlier works like the album "Timeless".

What's your guys opinions on jump up? Or dnb with an MC? After looking through this thread it's mostly liquid, also would I be right in assuming most of you are in the US? Being in the UK what I know as dnb seems to be pretty different. Purely from a home-listening perspective, jump up's painful to listen to for any length of time, but it's absolutely brilliant in small doses as it can really get you going. MCs are fine if they're just providing vocals for a track (as with the DRS album I mentioned a little while back) but nobody wants to hear them chatting poo poo over the top of tracks. As an example, I listened to London Elektricity's Live At The Scala album again recently, and while obviously the crowd would have gone with the flow, listening to Wrec pleading for jazz hands every other track was just cringeworthy. As for the demographic of the thread, I imagine that most of those above championing the new Audio and BSE albums are American, as it's more their style, but honestly the way the thread ebbs and flows there's probably a pretty even split. The easiest way to tell is if someone's praising something, they're probably American, and if they're moaning about it (and harking back to the good old days) they're probably British

I like to play some jump up, but it's tough to listen to a recorded set of it. Although, I do like pretty much everything ram put out up to like 2008 or something, now I'm kind of falling off. MCs are an event ONLY thing for me. I can't stand hearing them on a recorded set, except for a few minor exceptions like DRS. I don't even like hearing GQ on a recording, although when I saw him with Andy C ages ago it was really good in a crowd. The thing I hate the most are the rewinds. I know the song goes off, but with all the rewinds they only end up playing seven or eight songs in a showcase setup. Just let it breathe a little bit.

While I dig that in small doses, I can't stay there very long if that's all they play. Yeah I used to go to that party every week when all they would play is true ragga jungle. Then my friend Spamm Kid stopped booking the night, and the club handed it to "DJ RESIN". DJ RESIN is one of the worst Djs I've ever heard. He plays what he calls "Jump-up Wobble" and it is loving poison to a dancefloor. Now every month or so Spamm Kid will book the night, and me, J.Dub, Proppa Bear, Greenleaf, or some other true junglist will play. Also sometimes they book the decent DNB/jungle acts on Sat. instead of Thursday, so that RESIN can't ruin the night. But anyway, the best way to find DNB parties is to friend all the local DNB/Jugle dudes on Facebook. They post about their gigs all over town incessantly. If you want links to some personal pages just hit me up on facebook or soundcloud or something. EDIT: Also if you see the "Below C Level" crew logo on a party, there will probably be some awesome jungle played there. Maguro fucked around with this message at 06:32 on Nov 7, 2012 |
