We need more beer up here!

SUPER HASSLER posted:

It's Trader Joe's pick-a-six time! Who needs to pay hard money for Budweiser when I can have Simpler Times instead?

Simpler Times is a good beer to drink to see what diacetyl tastes like.

Trader Joe's does have some great beer, although they're usually in the $6.99/sixer range. The Mission St. pale ale and ipa are both awesome, and the brown ale is perfectly fine for $3 a bomber even if it's a little boring. The Stockyard Stout is amazing, an excellent lower gravity oatmeal stout. The vintage ale is great as well for $5. My store still has some from last year, I'm gonna grab one or two and do a side by side with this years.

They have a lot of German styles but from what I've seen they're all brewed by Gordon Biersch, and I've not had one I really liked. It's a shame because I love German beers but I've tried the oktoberfest, bock and the hefeweizen and they were all pretty bland. Are there any of those that are good? I keep getting pulled in by the allure of cheap German beer but I don't want to try the dunkelweizen or bohemian lager and be dissapointed again.

Mission st. is pretty solid. Though it's expected since it's a Firestone Walker creation.

I pass on the German brews at Trader Joe's. You're right, none I've ever tried were worth a drat. I'm amazed yours still has the vintage around.

so my coworker's band was on tour and he entertained my half-joking request to bring back some Marshal Zhukov from Tampa. he went by the brewery last Saturday and there were no more bottles, but he was kind enough to get me a growler (32oz only, apparently) despite the fact that the place was very busy and he's not much of a beer dude. great of him, especially since he wouldn't let me repay him, but i remember someone saying that it was generally very easy to find in the area. is the demand/hype higher this year or did he just pick a bad bay?

also, i know this isn't the trading thread, but if someone wants to save me a bottle or two i'll send you some Gingerbread Stout when it comes out next month.

yeah, that's the preachy, self-righteous straightedge kid from my high school class whose father bought him into the business. i have straightedge friends and it's totally fine, but i took DARE class with that smug dickhead and the fact that he runs a brewery now makes me want to stomp him out.

as for Donkey Punch, that's pretty awful, but nowhere near as bad as Big Beaver Brewing Company. i mean jesus christ their logo is enough to make me want to burn the place down, nevermind the sixth-grade humor on display throughout their website.

Is Big Beaver in some backwoods as gently caress part of Colorado? I can't imagine how they are in business with mediocre beers and names of beer that would make me embarrassed to order/admit I liked even if they were good.

Nope, decent sized city of ~70,000 one town over from where I live. I've never bothered to go and try any of their beer even though I used to work like a mile from the brewery because I didn't want to give that moron money or encouragement.

It's a bit hard to read, but the BB Batch 9000 is at the top of the center column. If you are there when it's still on, get it. The One Goes To 11 Ale is in bottles but probably also great on tap.I've been told the Ravissant is good but haven't had it. I would recommend just getting whatever has the yellow Bell's stickers next to them, that means it's an exclusive to the cafe.

I will pick some up for sure. Im also interested in trying the cherry stout. Which is in the bottom right hand corner cuttoff just a little. That is available here though so I might try that this weekend.

I have a confession to make; myself and some friends went to the Big Beaver once, and I was drunk and...well... I own a Bust-a-Nut Brown Ale T-shirt  (Their beer is average brewpub stuff.)

Note that that is the bourbon barrel cherry stout, which isn't available in bottles (yet). I actually had it the other day when I was visiting and was a bit disappointed.

Thomas Hardy's oh my lord thank you, Shane.

The Ølfabrikken Winter Porter was so infected it was hilarious. I didn't think you could make a spiced beer even worse, but this did.

*Edit* @Tigren - No, this was my last bottle from the original batch. Still remarkably solid for its age. Serious dry hop was gone, obviously, but still pretty tropical.

Visiting family in VT, made a stop yesterday at The Alchemist for a half case of Heady Topper then a bottle shop today for....bottles.

Started with the FBS. Terrific beer, reminds me a lot of the fresh coffee versions of Speedway Stout which Alesmith doesn't bottle. Maybe a bit heavy on the dark chocolate but not in a gimmicky way.

Really, really looking forward to trying the Lawson's offerings. Guy was just stocking bottles of Jade, a single hop IPA, and as he was removing them from the case people were standing next to him grabbing bottles. With a one per customer limit only two made it into the cooler. Gonna ship whatever I don't finish back home, but I have a feeling I might power through a lot of what's been bought before I leave. Real shame if I have to make another trip to the bottle shop before then.

Funny story about the trip to The Alchemist, this couple ahead of us in line goes "yeah, we came here from san diego, that's got to be the furthest visitor you've had today." I asked him where from in SD, and when he said El Cajon I had to pull out my driver's license and one-up him by about five miles. What a gigantic coincidence.

Also, I hate the rain and while it's pretty as poo poo here right now I couldn't deal with being damp for five months a year or every store I walk in to overcompensating for a 55-degree day by running the heat at 80. Nothing like sweating through a hoodie. Christ.

Holy gently caress Ballast Point's Indra Kunindra is possibly the most disgusting thing I've ever had in my life. Admittedly I don't like curry, but gently caress the curry isn't even in the background it's almost the entire aroma and flavor. This is awful if I want to experience this again I'll just open a curry packet into Ballast Point's Black Marlin or something. I can't even get past 3 sips, drain pour.

I'm going to drink a Victory Old Horizontal from 2006 to wash this away. I think it's from 2006 anyway, it says Best Before December 29, 2011.
